The 99 - A Better Anje Falkenrath - Core Strategy & Game Plan: A Definitive Player Guide

How to Win in Three Easy Steps!

  1. Cast Anje
  2. Find Worldgorger Dragon & Animate Dead
  3. Bury Worldgorger Dragon & Cast Animate Dead

Simple enough. This Deck relies on an old Combo that has been hidden up Rakdos's sleeve for a long time. It wasn't until Anje Falkenrath came around did it shake back out. Now, why is that? Anje has the unique effect of Rummaging through our list: Discarding & Drawing. This is particularly potent when you look at what part of the Color Pie she is in. To start, let's take a look at all the ways we can get Anje out by Turn 2 as she's essential to our game plan.

As usual, the likely suspects will be amongst this list, but to help you identify each one I will point them out here.

Creatures: Blood Pet, Simian Spirit Guide & Skirk Prospector

Sorcery: Rite of Flame

Instant: Dark Ritual

Artifacts: Chrome Mox, Jeweled Amulet, Lotus Petal, Mana Crypt, Mox Diamond & Sol Ring

Land: Gemstone Caverns (If not on Play)

Although it's not essential Anje be Cast by Turn 2, it should be our objective to get her onto the field as early as possible. In some instances we can even have her out by Turn 1, but even if she doesn't land until Turn 3 that's fine so long as the hand we kept had some amount of interaction/Tutors for future plays.

There are a total of twelve Cards that can help us get Anje onto the Battlefield by Turn 2. This is the first step towards our Victory. We need Anje on the field Rummaging through our list using the multitude of Madness Cards to set up our Worldgorging Loop.

While being Hastened and given the ability to Draw a Card at the expense of Burying one is fine and all, it's Anje's Triggered Ability that is most important here: when we dispose of a Madness Card, we can Untap Anje Falkenrath.

Every Madness Card:

Creatures: Anje's Ravager, Archfiend of Spite, Asylum Visitor, Big Game Hunter, Bloodhall Priest, Bloodmad Vampire, Brain Gorgers, Gorgon Recluse, Grave Scrabbler, Incorrigible Youths, Insatiable Gorgers, Muck Drubb, Nightshade Assassin, Reckless Wurm, Stromkirk Occultist, Twins of Maurer Estate, Voldaren Pariah   & Weirded Vampire

Sorceries: Alchemist's Greeting, Avacyn's Judgment, Call to the Netherworld & Psychotic Episode

Instants: Dark Withering, Fiery Temper & Psychotic Haze

Enchantment: Strength of Lunacy

You might have noticed we use every single Madness Creature. Why is that? Well, some have useful Abilities - Muck Drubb & Nightshade Assassin, I'm looking at you - but more importantly, they are Creatures. Simply Discarding them with Anje strengthens our list, by: 1. Giving us a Creature to Target during the Worldgorger Dragon loop to end it (should you need to end it), 2. Feeds our Threshold for Cards like Cabal Ritual and 3. Makes Songs of the Damned the strongest Ritual and Mausoleum Secrets the greatest Tutor you've ever seen. The only other Madness Cards we keep are useful ones... It is unadvisable to run every single Madness Card, not if you're looking to win with this list in a competitive scene. We need to keep certain interactions within our list; so sticking with the twenty-six best Madness Cards, providing Anje over 1/4th of a list of Rummage worthy Cards, is how we'll win and still have defensive measures to boot.

There's a delicate balance to this list, between a healthy amount of Lands, Madness Cards (which are generally useless if Anje is not out) and interactions such as Pyroblast and Bolt Bend to stave off Opponents wincons and bolster our own... I find luck to be the biggest factor of any MTG game, in any format, so to mitigate that we need balance. Now that we have the perfect blend of Madness Cards, mixed in with all of our Tutors, let’s talk about he (or she) who Gorge’s the World.

Worldgorger Dragon is either our best friend or our worst enemy, but it’s entirely on you which one. Will the Dragon Gorge upon our World or our Opponents? Let's take a look at the Loop:

With Worldgorger Dragon in our Graveyard...

  1. Cast Animate Dead/Dance of the Dead/Necromancy Targeting Worldgorger Dragon
  2. (If Resolved) Worldgorger Dragon ETB's Exiling all our Permanents, including Enchant Aura
  3. (If Resolved) When Animate Dead/Dance of the Dead/Necromancy LTB, Bury Worldgorger Dragon
  4. Worldgorger Dragon will have it's second Triggered Ability Activate, bringing everything back to include Animate Dead/Dance of the Dead/Necromancy -> Targeting Worldgorger Dragon

In this realm, everything we do from here on out will happen at Instant speed. If Anje Falkenrath is still in play, so long as we have at least one Card in hand, we will Rummage through our list until we find: Avacyn's Judgment, Fiery Temper or (Optionally) Bloodhall Priest

Winning with Avacyn's Judgment:

  1. Use the WGD Loop to make Infinite Mana
  2. With Anje Falkenrath in play, Rummage for Avacyn's Judgment
  3. During the WGD Loop, with the ETB Trigger on the Stack, Rummage with Anje to Discard and Cast Avacyn's Judgment Targeting all Opponents for InFiNiTe DaMaGe or whatever arbitrary amount you prefer

Winning with Fiery Temper:

  1. Use the WGD Loop to make Infinite Mana
  2. With Anje Falkenrath in play, Rummage for Fiery Temper
  3. During the WGD Loop, with the ETB Trigger on the Stack, Rummage with Anje to Discard and Cast Fiery Temper, Draw a Card and continue Rummaging
  4. Rummage until you Draw and Discard Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, Shuffling your Graveyard into your Library
  5. Proceed with steps 2 through 4 until the board is Damaged out

Winning with Bloodhall Priest (Not Advisable):

  1. Use the WGD Loop to make Infinite Mana
  2. With Anje Falkenrath in play, Rummage for Bloodhall Priest
  3. During the WGD Loop, with the ETB Trigger on the Stack, Rummage with Anje to Discard and Cast Bloodhall Priest, Draw a Card and continue Rummaging
  4. Cast all Instant speed Spells from Hand - not by Rummaging/Madness - until you are Hellbent during the WGD Loop
  5. Once Hellbent, continue the WGD Loop until Bloodhall Priest Damages out the board

I only ever recommend using Bloodhall Priest as a Win Condition if Kozilek, Butcher of Truth has been removed from your Graveyard and only then. If Anje Falkenrath happens to be removed during this Loop (and not Worldgorger Dragon, for whatever reason) and Bloodhall Priest is on the Battlefield from a previous Turn, if you have nothing but Instant speed Spells remaining in hand, go ahead and get Hellbent. Otherwise, I always recommend using either Avacyn's Judgment or Fiery Temper to Damage out the board. It is far safer doing so, as these Spells will always be Cast from Madness allowing us to hold counter measures and continually Draw without fault.

You might have noticed, but this particular list relies solely on the Worldgorger Dragon Loop. If looking for a Plan B, I would advise adding Dualcaster Mage + Heat Shimmer as assembling this Combo is not difficult with Anje's Ability and the range of Tutors we have. However, as the list is constructed currently, we're going all in on this Combo working and producing a win. With that in mind, work on tailoring a hand with every counter measure possible before Commencing Operation Worldgorger. When you decide to play the WGD Loop, you've agreed to play an all-or-nothing strategy. Every Card in this list is meant to assist in making the strategy go off without a hitch, so plan accordingly and you will win. Anje Falkenrath has been more fun than I could have imagined... When she was spoiled, I did not think the lists would be so potent, but after having tailored my own I couldn't be happier. I hope this Primer and the following video(s) help you create a better Anje Falkenrath.
