Boros Equipment

This is a really rough draft of cards I threw together for the recently spoiled Akiri, Fearless Voyager. I have had many different versions of Boros decks throughout the years, and this commander has scratched a really specific itch that the guild has been lacking.

This is a rough draft for me to get started with, as you can see i'm over 100 cards, and I'll be removing some as I playtest. I'll categorize each section by what the cards do and how likely I am to keep them. Also this is a pretty casual deck and is using a lot cards I had on hand so there is a lot of room for optimization.

Let me know if you think of any sweet cards to add and without any further ado, lets get into the deck!

Obviously the meat of the deck. Our equipment allows us to hit hard, draw cards, and protect our creatures.

Top Tier

Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Shuko, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots - cheap, repeatable equip triggers to start drawing cards and protecting the gang early and for cheap.

Sword of the Animist - Equipment ramp lol.

Sunforger - Pinnacle of Boros equipment. lets us tutor for some great spells like Boros Charm to protect our board.

Sculpting Steel, Masterwork of Ingenuity - Clones for our equipment.

Argentum Armor, - Some of the best equipment. Casting and equip costs are high, but can be mitigated with other effects.

Whispersilk Cloak, Sword of Truth and Justice, Sword of Feast and Famine, [[]] - Let our creatures get through pretty easily for consistent card draw. Be careful of Whispersilk Cloak, as shroud means you can't equip anything else until you get this thing off your creature.

Mid Tier

Loxodon Warhammer, Grappling Hook, Maul of the Skyclaves - Equipment that are pretty powerful, but their equip cost make it difficult to activate often when we are unequipping them often.

Colossus Hammer - Mostly a meme with effects like Brass Squire, Hammer of Nazahn, or Sigarda's Aid to equip for free and see our 1/1 Kor Duelist become an 11/11 double striker.

Hero's Blade - Not sure how good this one will be. A free equipment to remove for Akiri, Fearless Voyager's ability and +3/+2 seems pretty good, but once its unequipped its pretty average and we need to be equipping lots of creatures to get consistent card draw. Could be good if your meta runs lots of exile to get around Akiri, Fearless Voyager's ability and you're casting her often.

Meh Tier

Once we have our sweet, sweet equipment on the battlefield, we need ways of making them better (because let's be honest they need all the help they can get in edh). These dudes either help us cast equipment or do something splashy with our equipment.

Top Tier

Puresteel Paladin - Probably the best card in the deck. lets us draw cards for playing equipment and if you have enough makes them free to equip, so we can constantly remove them to protect our board.

Sram, Senior Edificer - Slightly worse Puresteel Paladin.

Stoneforge Mystic - Great equipment tutor, and we can throw out the biggest equipment turn after turn, and protect her with the equipment we unattach.

Sigarda's Aid, Leonin Shikari, Brass Squire - Let us equip at instant speed which is sweet. Good if people board wipe multiple times so you can equip and unequip on opponents turns. Sigarda's Aid is the cream of the crop here as its beyond cheap, and lets us play and equip at instant.

Danitha Capashen, Paragon, Auriok Steelshaper, Nahiri, Storm of Stone, Zirda, the Dawnwaker, - reducing the cost of our main thing is cool and good. Zirda's ability reduces equip costs which is neat.

Valduk, Keeper of the Flame, Kemba, Kha Regent - Dump out tokens for each equipment we have attached? Sure. You can attach equipment to the tokens and swing with them to draw cards and then just let them die. Or hit face. Win/Win!

Nahiri, Heir of the Ancients, Nahiri, the Lithomancer - The original equipment planeswalker, who's also from Zendikar and has a uh, interesting past, with our commander. Now some of you may think "Oh but TheScorpionGod planeswalkers die SO EASILY in edh and this deck has NO WAY of protecting them >>>>:(" well you're right but she's cool so shes going in.

Mid Tier

Inspiring Statuary - Our equipment mostly just sits there, so we can tap them to help pay for non-equipment spells. Not sure if this one will be worth it, but I at least wanna see it in action.

Jor Kadeen - Pretty good finisher when Metalcraft pops, but pretty expensive for a dude with a sword who dies to a board wipe.

Stone Haven Outfitter - Mother, may I have Puresteel Paladin? But Child, We have Puresteel Paladin at home. *the Puresteel Paladin at home*.

Tiana, Ship's Caretaker - Pretty safe recursion against Shatterstorm effects, and we can protect her with our equipment. Could be a cute interaction if you run more artifact graveyard shenanigans as you can sac equipment and get them right back to your hand.

OK so now we have our equipment and payoffs, but we need cannon fodder to actually swing with!

Top Tier

Healer's Hawk, Soltari Foot Soldier - One Drops that are evasive so we can swing and not worry about them dying to some random token.

Kor Duelist, Kitesail Apprentice - One drops that get better when equipped. Heck yeah.

Midnight Haunting, Spectral Procession - Evasive bodies at a pretty good rate.

Mid Tier

Silverblade Paladin, Swiftblade Vindicator - Get pretty strong when equipped and cheap, but also can just die. Could be top tier with the right hand but just expect double strike to draw lots of attention when you slam them down.

Beetleback Chief, Dragon Fodder, Siege-Gang Commander - These make goblins and don't cost a lot of money so bingo baby.

Boring but necessary things to deal with opponents' stuff.

Day of Judgment, Divine Reckoning - we can wipe the board and use our commander to save our own creatures.

Forsake the Worldly, Return to Dust

These help us protect our board when we don't have the mana to equip/unequip.

Boros Charm - great board protection and can even hit an opponents creature.

Brave the Elements - Give your board to swing under an enemy's creatures.

Not much pure card draw here but our commander makes up for that so these help just toss away extra lands or dead cards.

Nahiri, the Harbinger - Repeatable removal and looting. Close as we are gonna get. Also can ultimate for a big equipment or creature but getting there is unlikely.

Daretti, Scrap Savant - More looting and can even exchange equipment on the field and in the graveyard.

Cathartic Reunion, Tormenting Voice - looting through our deck.

Extra combats in this deck are really interesting because when the equipment is removed and your creature becomes indestructible, it is indestructible for the rest of the turn and any further combats on that turn. Ideally we can attack, draw three and remove equipment to make the attackers indestructible, cast an extra combat and draw three more and not worry about the attackers. This is probably the section I need to add to most.

Savage Beating - Expensive but can deal a lot of damage by potentially quadrupling our damage.

Fury of the Horde - We will be drawing plenty of cards so exiling two for an extra combat and potentially three more cards in hand is pretty nice.

Pretty standard stuff regarding ramp. We're in Red/White so we'll take ramp where we can get it. Yada yada boros is stinky at ramp.

Wayfarer's Bauble - First up, there's Wayfarer's Bauble.

Boros Signet, Talisman of Conviction - Ramps and fixes.

Sol Ring - yup.

These are cards I might add to this deck, are on my radar, or I don't have yet and will get eventually.

Steelshaper's Gift - Just find any equip ya need.

Stonehewer Giant - Pretty cool, and a little slow, but its hard to pass up tutoring and equipping an Argentum Armor for free. Also a tutor in white is a tutor in white.

Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Generous Gift, Chaos Warp - Premium removal.

Jhoira's Familiar, Foundry Inspector - reduce the cost of our equipment and ramp so could be worth it. Jhoira's Familiar also reduces the cost of Legendary things which is cool.

Balan, Wandering Knight - Not sure if worth it, but a great target to stack equipment with.

Dockside Extortionist - Turns 2 mana into a lot of mana.

Goblin Welder, Goblin Engineer, Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer - Recursion/Protection for our equipment.

Infiltration Lens - Cheap and draws cards.

Quest for the Holy Relic - Pretty interesting effect and not too bad either.

Helm of the Host - Create a token of Akiri, Fearless Voyager, and attack with her and two other creatures to draw 6 cards as each Akiri, Fearless Voyager checks.

Darksteel Plate - You don't even need to remove the equipment to give them indestructible until end of turn if the equipment does that already.

Sword of Body and Mind - You could probably include most of the Sword of Something and Something Else cycle, as protection from two colors is pretty good and the on-hit effects are good.

Embercleave - Seems like a great surprise equipment.

Segovian Angel, Ornithopter and Serra Ascendant - to name a few, more evasive 1-drops. Serra Ascendant will get you targeted automatically though.

If you got this far thanks for reading! There are some sections that are really bare-bones that I need to flush out but I think this is a good first draft.

I hope this list helps you in your own deck building or inspires you to try Boros out!
