Xiahou Dun - Fun Multyplayer EDH - Sac/Stax

Commander / EDH Control Midrange Mono-Black Multiplayer Reanimator Stax

shinobi441

Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed is the head of this Commander deck and he brings a great deal of "sac-for-value" flavor, which this deck strives to mimic. This ability embodies the mono-black characteristic of exchanging resources (like creatures or life) for answers to threats - both proactively and retroactively. As such, the deck contains a multitude of tools that present the pilot with endless lines of play and decision making; unique and clever ways of attaining a crap ton of value will find you often with this deck. The following tools are utilized to synergize with death triggers and perpetual sacrifice effects:

  1. Sacrifice Effects
  2. Board Control
  3. Creatures with ETB/LTB Effects
  4. Recursion
  5. Card Draw, Tutoring, & Ramp

This deck is best played in Multiplayer. I've tuned this deck for players who find themselves in multiple playgroups; some of which may be competitive and spiky, and some casual or even a bit clunky. The point being: this deck also strives to have some versatility in choosing whether it wants to "play fair" or not - and I find that it has a medium-high power level (speaking from the viewpoint of_ my_ playgroup).

Xiahou Dun Combos: Corpse Dance + Nim Deathmantle + Rings of Brighthearth are used to recur Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed multiple times within a turn (if your mana permits it).

Lands like High Market and Phyrexian Tower + cards like Trading Post, Phyrexian Altar, and Ashnod's Altar all give you easy sacrifice outlets that turn on a lot of strong synergies in this deck.

Sacrificing creatures and having lots of sacrifice fodder can net you tons of mana, trigger Grave Pact effects, turn on control effects like Contamination and Smokestack, allow you to tutor + draw cards, and most importantly, pitch high value creatures to the yard for LTB triggers (Kokusho, the Evening Star, Mindslicer) AND recurring ETB triggers over and over. Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Rune-Scarred Demon are some of my favorites.)

Enchantment and Artifact Removal: Yeah, so it turns out our graveyard is 100% essential. So if you see a Rest in Peace or Leyline of the Void, run for Nevinyrral's Disk, All Is Dust, Karn Liberated, Oblivion Stone, or Ugin, the Spirit Dragon - some are better compared to others in certain situations.

Creature Removal:We also have tons of creature removal in this deck like Toxic Deluge, Damnation, Decree of Pain, Black Sun's Zenith, and Hero's Downfall.

Stax: (This part of the deck is inspired a lot by Tier 1: Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed **Updated**) Smokestack, Contamination, Attrition, Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos, Mindslicer, Sheoldred, Whispering One

Make Em Dance: Use Buried Alive to fish out some nasties from the deck. (Multiple times if you're stylin' with Xiahou Dun.) You have a choice in what kind of "package" of creatures you want out:

  1. Maybe you want to swing with the team?: Try Grave Titan + It That Betrays + Mogis's Marauder to really just blast someone.

  2. Do you have some recursion like Nim Deathmantle + Phyrexian Reclamation + Volrath's Stronghold out with any sac outlets like Ashnod's Altar + Attrition + Phyrexian Tower ?: Try Gray Merchant of Asphodel + Kokusho, the Evening Star + Smothering Abomination for a life drain train that comes with draw!

  3. Pot of Greed: Rune-Scarred Demon + Sidisi, Undead Vizier + Wurmcoil Engine will get you a board presence and some more tools to get your opponents to roll their eyes.

In any event, the key is to cast Living Death or Victimize to get these creatures out of the yard to synergize with your artifacts and enchantments (see Stax) and to gain a massive board presence. Utilize any of the tutors in the deck to get both Buried Alive and Living Death in the grip.

That one infinite combo in the deck: You can use Basalt Monolith + Exsanguinate + Rings of Brighthearth to kill everyone, and Boseiju, Who Shelters All if you're really sick of their...

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Budget is "~$100 or less per card". If you know of any sac engines/outlets/gems that would fit or of any ETB creatures that would be of use, please comment!
