Pubstomping on a Budget

At the time of making this deck (10/10/2019), each card in the list besides the generals costs under 50 cents. The prices were verified according to TcgPlayer.com's market price. Luckily even the generals are not very pricey, so the overall deck is very affordable!

The cards in the maybeboard were either just outside of budget or didn't make the cut due to narrow effect or high cmc. Check them out if you can spare a bit more expense or if you want to tune your build for your meta.

Basic Strategy:

  • Ideally get Tana, the Bloodsower out on turn 3 using a mana dork / signet played on turn 2.

  • Next turn play Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder giving Tana double strike and lifelink. If we have a leftover mana, we can use it to equip a Bonesplitter/Civic Saber that was played on turn 1, or buff Tana with a Might of the Masses, Dust Corona, umbra, etc. In my experience, few opponents are able or willing to block at this stage in the game, so we should be able to swing with Tana and generate 4+ saprolings.

  • Turn 5, take somebody out! Take out whoever you think is most likely to board wipe. I usually go for Blue or Black players first since they can more easily find answers to our shenanigans. How do we eliminate someone so early? With our secret tech: dumb auras/equipment! All-for-one effects like Bravado will make Tana pretty beefy thanks to the saprolings and other creatures we played earlier. Here's where it gets interesting: These effects make Tana exponentially bigger every time she connects, and she connects twice per turn thanks to Bruse's double strike boon. So with 5 other creatures out at this point (Bruse + 4 saprolings), Tana is a 7/7 with Bravado. On her first hit, she will make 7 saprolings, making her a 14/14, then her second strike will hit for 14 (for an even 21 commander!) and make 14 more saprolings!

  • Turn 6, finish the game up either by swinging for commander damage and/or going wide with saprolings + anthems (e.g. Collective Blessing).

  • Of course, things rarely go perfectly according to plan, so we do run some protective cards like umbras and instant-speed indestructibility.
