I started playing EDH in 2011 and am an active participant in the Chicago EDH scene. Building unique decks and supporting the philosophy that "fun > winning" are important to me. As the format becomes more popular and decks become more powerful, I try to advocate for janky/weird/aesthetic/experimental styles. These decks are the most fun and interesting, but I fear they are slowly being edged out of many playgroups. Feel free to leave a message on my wall if you want to talk EDH philosophy or receive deck advice!

Hi MistaMint. Yeah Garth is cool. I made a Super Budget Version of him that wins by untapping Garth, flickering Garth, and populating Shivan Dragon tokens.

In your Garth build, it looks like you don't get to play Door to Nothingness very often. This deck lets me break out the Door in every game. The neat thing about it is I don't pop the Door until someone threatens to win, take me out, or until I've drawn into enough mana and Door-reuse effects to take out all opponents at once (this one takes a while). You're right that a strategy like this is boring if overplayed. I have a ton of decks and would not break this one out more than once in a night, and if I do I leave it out of rotation during the next session.

I'm with you on tutoring for wincons, it usually isn't fun to pilot or play against. This deck is different because it doesn't tutor for an infinite combo to win, it just sets Door to Nothingness on the table and says "don't make me Door you!" Everyone gets to keep playing, and my opponents get ample opportunity to destroy the Door or kill me while it's tapped/when I don't have enough mana to use it defensively. It breeds interaction and to me that is right in line with the spirit of EDH despite the whole "tutoring for the same card every game" thing that is typically antithetical to the format.

Have you considered these cards? Cloudshift, Ephemerate, Flicker of Fate, Justiciar's Portal, Slip On the Ring, Acrobatic Maneuver, Scrollshift, Distinguished Conjurer, Gilraen, Dunedain Protector, Livio, Oathsworn Sentinel

After you declare Aurelia as an attacker, you can respond to her triggered ability with a Cloudshift effect to flicker her, making her a new object. Then when she attacks during the 2nd combat, her ability triggers again to get you a third combat. The creatures who have cloudshift abilities are extra nice because the number of extra combats you get is only limited by the amount of mana you have available to spend on their abilities.

Cool deck. Personally I would make these swaps:

Dunedain Blade -> Pariah (put Pariah on Tajic and you will never take damage)
Starfield Mystic -> Unquestioned Authority (makes Tajic unblockable)
Geode Golem -> Ornithopter of Paradise (gets Tajic out a turn sooner and can help trigger his ability)
Butcher's Cleaver -> Loxodon Warhammer (strictly better)
True-Faith Censer -> Conjurer's Mantle
Heavy Mattock -> Horn of Valhalla
Commander's Authority -> Forth Eorlingas!

No Grinding Station?

Also it might be cool to create pseudo-Battered Golems by combining cards like Blisterspit Gremlin, Dwarven Patrol, and Nettle Drone with cards like Liquimetal Torque, Liquimetal Coating, and Ashnod's Transmogrant.

You might consider these too: Kessig Flamebreather, Lambholt Raconteur  Flip, Keen Sense, Snake Umbra, Illusionist's Bracers, Battlemage's Bracers, Cemetery Prowler
