I started playing EDH in 2011 and am an active participant in the Chicago EDH scene. Building unique decks and supporting the philosophy that "fun > winning" are important to me. As the format becomes more popular and decks become more powerful, I try to advocate for janky/weird/aesthetic/experimental styles. These decks are the most fun and interesting, but I fear they are slowly being edged out of many playgroups. Feel free to leave a message on my wall if you want to talk EDH philosophy or receive deck advice!

Hello, could I have some help with my spellslinger deck? It is meant to be a bit janky and not super powerful and its my first deck with this kind of focus

Profet93 yeah I think this boils down to a difference in playstyle. I have some decks where I dedicate a bunch of cards to protecting the generals cuz they need time to do their thing. For this one I think it's best to combo or bust, because to spend slots on guarding Carah dilutes the power of the deck.

Even though Seal costs 5, cost reducers are so valuable in this build that I want to include as many as possible. I want two costs reducers out. From there, I dig for either Birgi, Storm-Kiln Artist, Runaway Steam-Kin, or Neheb. Any one of these four gives me great odds to play most if not all of the approaches in the deck since every approach will cost 0 at that point. So Seal and kin are integral to the game plan, definitely not winmore. I don't think it's redundant since I'm aiming for 2 reducers and there are only 8 in the deck. Heck if I owned a Stone Calendar I'd be making room for it.

It's worth exiling approaches from the yard for extra mana that can be used to play a combo piece. So Rapacious Dragon is really valuable (he's like 2 Lotus Petals that you can tutor into play when needed). I'm even thinking of slotting in Goldspan Dragon as a second Rapacious, just not sure what to take out for it. Maybe Extraplanar Lens ?

Profet93 consider this though: you played your Seal and followed it up with Carah the next turn. Turn after that, you’re chaining Approaches for 2 mana (or even less if you have another cost reducing effect). The fifth Approach lets you grab Rapacious Dragon which lets you play another Approach or two thanks to the treasures.

To have had Greaves / Swat in place of Seal / Dragon in the above scenario slows the strategy down. Approaches would be costing 3 and there’s no free treasure. We might dodge a removal spell but we lose multiple turns worth of speed. Greaves and Swat are great cards but I’m just not convinced yet that they deserve slots in this deck

Hey again Profet93. Those are definitely good suggestions. I’m trying to maintain the number of Approaches at 35 (for odds reasons). What would you take out for Swat and Greaves?

Hey CalebKT thanks for checking out the list and offering some ideas!

Yep Mana Geyser is great and has been on my radar. I decided against it since it doesn’t get Carah out faster and can be tricky to cast within a chain of Approaches due to its high cmc. It’s good for the turn following Carah’s entry or like you said, as part of a Past in Flames or similar replay effect, so it’s definitely worth considering.

For this deck, a copy of Approach is actually more useful than Double Vision. We just need one Approach + Carah to start chaining them, so I think the 5 mana investment into DV isn’t worth it. In playtesting I can usually close out the game the turn after Carah drops, or at worst the turn after that. That’s also the reason I don’t run much removal. It’s definitely a glass cannon strategy but I think that’s spiritually fitting for mono red haha.

The cool thing about Carah + Approach is we never need a draw spell. Carah is essentially +1 draw and every Approach is like +3 draw. Also you could always snag a Knollspine Dragon off a fifth Approach if you really need to pick up some some accelerant (e.g. Lotus Petal , Rite of Flame ) to continue the chain of Approaches.

Great recommendations though, thanks again for sharing!
