Maybeboard

Piloting this simic beauty is a true joy. There are three paths to victory in this deck, but depending upon your draws you will have access to different lines of play. This is an engine deck, storming off in merfolk until you can access the combo and using counter magic to protect your board. The tribe can survive a loss of one or two members but has little resilience to a board-wipe so as you commit to the table there is greater and greater risk.

Plan A involves a difficult infinite combo. The primary component is getting Dramatic Reversal imprinted onto Isochron Scepter (there is one tutor for each card in the deck). Then you need at least two non-land mana sources such as Cryptolith Rite , Earthcraft or any combination of mana rocks with at least 2 Merfolk and Kumena in play. For this reason, when using any of the merfolk tutors in the deck, I often look for Jungleborn Pioneer . This unlocks infinite mana and infinite draw. Use this to get access to Ambassador Laquatus and then use endless mana to mill everyone out. Alternatively, you can use Rootwater Hunter for endless damage to any target. If you have access to Kiora's Follower or anything that turns creatures into mana, then you can choose to imprint Benefactor's Draught instead of Dramatic Reversal and achieve the same result. Don't be afraid to lay down the scepter early imprinting something else. If you pull the scepter but dont have the reversal, it is usually not worth waiting around for. Be proactive and imprint a counterspell or even ramp, whatever will be impactful and go for aggressive lines of play. Later, you can always use one of the 4 merfolk tutors to find Surgespanner , bounce the scepter and imprint again for the combo finisher. If you can't find the scepter, the draw/untapp effect can still be enabled with Paradox Engine , Intruder Alarm , Quest for Renewal and Merrow Commerce in diminishing levels of power in that order. Paradox Engine can still allow for infinite combo in fact, it's just much harder because it takes longer to play, meaning your opponents are more likely to have removal for it. Intruder Alarm is like half of Paradox Engine but it's just as risky if you play it early and pass the turn giving your opponents access to its symmetrical effect. I used to run Murkfiend Liege but then I realized it's just too slow for an effect requires me to pass the turn on to get value from. Quest for Renewal and Merrow Commerce won't let you go infinite but they can still be very useful.

Plan B to end the game, swing for unblockable damage through one of several means. Using either Lord of Atlantis or Master of the Pearl Trident you can partner with Reef Shaman or Tidal Warrior also Herald of Secret Streams . I was running Triumph of the Hordes but removed it in favor of more focus on the primary win condition.

The plan C to win with mass drain through Throne of the God-Pharaoh . Don't forget that creatures like Surgespanner , Lullmage Mentor can help you lock up the game or at least slow things down enough that you can dig deep for that win.

I have a better vision of the deck's win condition. I am removing Hardened Scales and Vorel of the Hull Clade to bring in Cryptolith Rite and Thada Adel, Acquisitor.

Basically there are a tone of "lord" effects. So I dont really want to focus on power from bonus counters. The deck basically wins through island walk. With all the draw power and tutor ability, I am easily to give all menfolk island walk and give my opponent an island. But the deck really turns on through the Commander and untapping effects. Trouble is, when the deck turns on, I am sometimes short on mana, so Rickshar and Cryptolith will hopefully clear that up for me. If in the future I am still struggling for mana, Ill consider another ramp source.
