Maybeboard

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen!

I am here today to try and break my personal favorite commander from 2020, Xyris, the writhing storm.

Xyris is a wheel deck at heart. And there have been other wheel decks in the past, such as Opus Thief. The main problem is when Xyris connects, both you and that player draw cards, and the lack of access to black for cards such as Notion Thief and Underworld dreams. However, Xyris is neat because of his wording in the text. He says "expect for the first one in their draw steps." So, if you wheel on your turn, you will still get 21 snakes. I think he is also an amazing stax piece. With so cantrips and flash hulk piles (I'm looking at you Kenrith and T&T) going around, your opponents will be forced into either giving more of a board presence. Wheels are a perfect piece of the puzzle too, not only getting you more snakes, but also making it so that your opponents can never really plan ahead. I also think that he can work in CEDH because not a lot of people come to a table expecting a bunch of little snakes poking them to death. There is generally not as many board wipes in edh. However, let's move into the game plans and combos.

COMBO 1: In a Ball of Fire

The primary combo of this deck is with Purphoros, God of the Forge, Xyris, and a wheel (let's say windfall). If you Windfall with Purphoros and Xyris, that is 21 snakes AND 41 damage to everyone! In most CEDH, there is not a whole lot of life gain going around. So normally if get this combo off you win.

COMBO 2: Peeking Your Curiosity

We all know that Curiosity has been a combo piece in CEDH for quite some time now. If you get Niv Mizzet, Glint Horn Buccaneer, or the brand new Brallin, Skyshark raider out, and stick a curiosity effect on to them, all you have to do is draw a card or discard a card, and that's infinite damage. And when were drawing and discarding like crazy in this deck, it's pretty easy to achieve.

COMBO 3: One with One Card

I talked about it a little in the intro, but if wheel with Narset, Partner of Veils on the field, you make your opponents discard their hand and draw 1. This does not win you the game outright, but with out any resources to deal with the snake army, you can just generally go on the beat down. Trust me, once you get this to work, victory is almost a guarantee.

COMBO 4: Spin the Wheel!

This is a wheel game plan the resolves around skullclamp, phyexian alter, and ashnod's altar. You can use the 21 snakes you generate per wheel to either find more wheels, get more mana, or find a purphoros to seal the deal.

COMBO 5: Why are there so many Motherf!!king snakes, on this Motherf!!king Plane!?!?

Plan 5 is just a snake beat down plan. Use cards like Edric, or Seshiro to either pump up your army or just draw you more cards. This can help you with finding either combo pieces or more wheels.

No Budget Options

If you have no budget on this deck (Since I'm a broke college student) I would recommend OG dual lands, Time twister, Wheel of Fortune, and FoW. Pretty Obvious, but just keep making upgrades like that, and you should be a OK!

WRAPUP Thank you all for listening to me ramble on. If you have any advice or recommendations, please leave them in the comments. Once again, thanks for reading through!

Updates Add

For the deck, I am now adding in a new combo. That means I am going to take some card slots away from the Curiosity lines. So here are the cuts and add ins.

First up, quality of life.

Game Trial ---> Ancient Tomb

Game Trial in this deck is a tap land in this deck, since we run so little lands with types. I would rather run a fast mana land over it, especially because this deck is not looking for a long game.

Burning Inquiry ---> Llanowar Elves

I do like Burning Inquiry in this deck, but I wanted to add in more mana ramp in the deck. It is 9 snakes, but I would rather take more consistency over it. In the future, if I have the budget, will replace llanowar Elves with a Chrome Mox. I only have 1 currently, and it's in another list.

Now, finally.

Brallin, Skyshark Rider ---> Lore Broker Preordain ---> intruder Alarm Tandem lookout ---> Gaea's Blessing

Here is how the new combo works. You have Xyris, Lore Broker, and intruder Alarm. Tap lore Broker, and each player draws and discards. 3 Snake triggers go onto the stack. Let one resolve. Then, intruder Alarm untaps everything. You can keep doing this until your opponents draw their decks. If they have more cards in Library than you, then just discard Gaea's Blessing, and keep shuffling your Graveyard into your Library.

Reasons for the cuts: I cut Preordain because in this deck, we wheel so much that we don't really need a poor cantrip. I then cut Brallin and Tandem lookout because they were the slowest parts of the curiosity combo. I'm also considering cutting Niv for one of the two other nivs, because they are not as mana intensive. But new Niv you don't really have to worry about him getting countered on the way down. At the end of the day, I'm considering it and will playtest with both. Thanks for reading through the update!
