The Story Show

The forest had fallen completely silent, save the gentle rustle of the leaves. Not a growl, not a single bird call, not a snarl. It was as if the forest was holding its breath, waiting for something to unfold.

However, the silence didn't unnerve me. Esper was quiet. Quiet and still and predictable. That is how it should be. Each movement was calculated, reserved. Each action had a planned, measured purpose.

The wilds that stood sentinel before me were the exact opposite. It moved on its own accord, the wind stooping low to rake the leaves and branches. The foliage swayed and shook without pattern or procedure. I shuddered at the utter lack of predictability. It was like an untamed beast that was drooling on the floor. This shall not do, I thought to myself.

They needed to be shown control. Restraint. They had to be shown how things should be.

Everything must be subjected to absolute, unquestionable control.

I have a mission. And I will bring control to them.

At that moment, a single figure appeared from behind the curtain of living emerald. A woman, small and slender, her head bowed. What had unnerved me most was the fact that she made not a sound while exiting the forest.

She raised her head. A set of piercing white eyes glared at me without any sign of wavering. Her gaze was heavy, intense, and pure. Pointed ears, angular facial features... Elvish. She would be a mesmerizing sight to behold for any other man, but Esper held no place passion and emotion. She held no allure for me.

"You mean to invade our land, to force our way of life to a standstill, to cage the wilds. You are not welcome here, Esper mage. Leave now."

Her tone was even, spaced, and airy. It was not a threat; it was a statement. No malice was held in her words.

Foolish woman. As if she could resist Esper's grasp.

"You have no say here, woman. This forest can and will be restrained. We will use its resources as we see fit. If you mean to challenge me, I would suggest finding a weapon of some kind. I am without mercy."

My words were smug, a smile crawling across my face. I was completely in control. She had no way to harm me that I couldn't predict. No spell could touch me. I was prepared, a capture spell curling around my finger tips. Perhaps we could study her and the effects that the Naya climate has on elves...

She inhaled deeply, breathing in the filthy, natural air. Perfectly calm.

"I warned you, vedalken. But you will not heed me. So be it. Unlike you, I believe in mercy. However... The wilds do not."

And at that moment, dozens upon dozens of monsters came out from hiding with an eruption of cracking limbs and shattering trunks. They came barreling out of the forest howling; behemoths, elementals, beasts, and even several wurms. They all roared in unison; a single, heart-stopping, shiver-inducing sound that resonated in every inch of my body. I could feel it shake my heart in my chest, rattling around like a loose stone in a landslide. Their life essence, a unison of sheer primal strength, drenched me in utter fear.

These creatures surged toward me, an unstoppable wall of scales, fur, and hide. I didn't even have time to move.

I didn't even have a moment to take a breath.

I was finished.

Deck Mechanics Show

This deck's functionality can be broken down into three main categories:

Step 1: Ramp.

Cards such as Explosive Vegetation , Tempt with Discovery , or Ranger's Path will get you ahead of your competition. Or, if your instants and sorceries are running low, there are tons of powerful (and budget) mana rocks that are at your disposal, such as the Ur-Golem's Eye , the expensive but versatile Dreamstone Hedron , Hedron Archive , or the always classic Sol Ring . Into the Wilds is also a good choice!

Step 2: The Beats.

Fatties. The bread and butter of this deck. And as Queen had once said, "Fat bottomed girls you make the rocking world go round." And this deck is an advocate of this mentality.

Dr. Mayael's ability is awesome. Revealing a creature with power 5 or greater and having it enter the battlefield without worrying about being countered is great. While not only bringing in the pain to your opponents' life totals with large power totals, creatures like Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger , Gisela, Blade of Goldnight , and Bane of Bala Ged have extra abilities and make them all the more useful.

-- Beat Enablers --

Within this deck, there are several cards I like to refer to as "Beat Enablers." These cards allow the beats to occur with much more ease, just in case Dr. May isn't dealing out her regular dose of Beats goodness.

Lurking Predators - Using Crouching Tiger, Hidden Predator basically goes like this:

Opponent: "I'm going to cast Sensei's Divining Top ."

Me: "Okay, I'll reveal the top card of my library... Ahhh, you'll have to deal with Godsire . Enjoy."

Primal Command - A wonderfully multipurpose tool. A tutor, a removal spell, or a deck refiller, this spell is fantastic.

Chord of Calling - Ring ring; it's the pain train.

Green Sun's Zenith - Same, brah.

Fires of Yavimaya - Gotta go fast.

Step 3: Protection.

With all these awesome creatures, you're sure to turn a few heads. Aaaaand that's when you start receiving some hostility from your opponents. And seeing that creatures make up the majority of this deck's win-cons, keeping them safe is of utmost importance. So, here are a few staples of keeping your fatties safe:

--Creatures--

Archetype of Endurance - This badass boar is very protective of his friends. By providing hexproof for all of your creatures, Mr. Endurance has placed himself highly on the list of extremely important creatures.

Dragonlord Dromoka - She basically says, "Wait your turn. I don't enjoy being interrupted."

The Breaker Brothers (A.K.A. Spellbreaker Behemoth and Spearbreaker Behemoth ) - These two gents are a pair to be reckoned with. Having your beasties chuckling at counter spells while being indestructible is a deadly combo to deal with.

Sigarda, Host of Herons - Sacrificing this deck's awesome creatures is never fun. It's a painful, heartbreaking experience. One of guys in my playgroup runs a mono-black commander deck with Sheoldred, Whispering One at the helm, which has lead to many sad moments for this deck. Then one day, while looking through the MTG card database, I came across a savior. Sigarda the Savior.

Avacyn, Angel of Hope - Do I need to say more?

Soul of New Phyrexia - This recent addition has proved itself to be ultra-valuable in a multiplayer match. Got a buddy who runs boardwipes or land destruction? This guy can help you on your way to victory.

Asceticism - Hexproof before it was cool. And regenerate on top op that? Boo yeah.
