Commander Voltron Enchantments!

With Uril, the Miststalker having been reprinted recently, perhaps it's a good time to rediscover one of the OGs of Voltron and give the deck a little update. We can look at budget (which is listed here) and options to upgrade as well!

Play this deck if you:

  • Enjoy creating a powerful commander in witch to destroy your foes and drink from their skulls!

  • Love thwarting your opponents with Hexproof and watch them anguish at their helplessness!

  • Are looking to beat a deck with extreme life gain. We don't care about life here, only commander damage!

  • Want to play a deck that is resilient to board wipes, and can even thrive afterwards!

  • Enjoy a little bit of jank, too! =)

Do not play this deck if you:

  • Want to play infinite combos

  • Intend to play against decks that can win in the first three turns. This is not a cEDH deck

  • Looking for gross interactions with extreme synergy. This is a straight-forward deck with little subtlety. Your opponents will know what's coming ... but can they even stop it?

Uril, the Miststalker was one of the first decks I ever made, and soon after I really caught the commander bug, building more and more decks.

I haven't played Uril for a long time, but I suddenly had the idea of using Enchantment Creatures to help bolster him, specifically creatures with the Bestow ability. These special creatures count as enchantments, and thus can provide a lot of synergy in our deck. More importantly, they can be used to enchant their abilities onto uril. This is important because if your opponent somehow manages to get past Uri's Hexproof, say with a forced sacrifice, then instead of going to the graveyard, your enchantments suddenly become creatures that must be dealt with, buying us time to get Uril back into play and enchanted again.

Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced an entire binder of cards that had the vast majority of my enchantment creatures, and so my choices were limited, but I intend to find those, see what I've got to add, find out what I don't have that I should buy, and update this deck when I can.

It is a valid point that mana dorks and fetch spells could be very good in this deck.

But we don't want them.

Instead, we will prefer to use enchantments and artifacts in order to provide just a little more synergy with some of our cards, such as Michiko's Reign of Truth  . We also want to begin preparing for upgrades where simply the act of playing enchantments and artifacts will help us draw more cards and power Uril.

Our main goal is to enchant Uril up the wazoo and swing in for commander damage. Not only can he get to a 10/10+ quickly, but odds are good you can give him Double Strike and one-shot kill opponents. This is great for keeping games short and dealing with infinite life decks as well, since they cannot ignore or heal through commander damage.

To enable this, we have included enchantments such as Spirit Mantle and artifacts like Manifold Key to make Uril, the Miststalker unblockable. We have chosen not to, but you can certainly add in Rogue's Passage and/or Prowler's Helm for even more, um, unblockiness.

Mantle of the Ancients is a win condition unto itself. It has back-breaking power to bring all the enchantment mods back from the graveyard for a surprise attack out of nowhere with a massive Uril. =)

While originally I did have a larger angel suite in the deck in the form of cards that would help constantly summon 4/4 Flying Angel tokens as blockers for us, we have settled on only using two. As I said, they can be steady blockers, a la Sigil of the Empty Throne, but in the an end-game situation they can be enchanted, as well, and you can "go wide" with a sudden armada of tokens from Entreat the Angels.

Lastly, we have our host of other beasties in the deck, but they aren't reliable as a win condition.

Thankfully, Uril, the Miststalker comes with his own protection in the form of Hexproof. Our opponents cannot target him with spells. Unfortunately, that does not protect him from global, non-taregted effects or combat damage.

Our umbras, like Hyena Umbra can help deal with any type of fatal damage. Don't forget to activate them!

Angelic Renewal also helps bring him right back from death, as does Nim's Deathmantle.

Lastly, Boros Charm and Teferi's Protection are cast at instant speed in times of need. Don't fret if you don't have the money for Teferi's (it's expensive, but it's great against an opponent's forced sacrifice spell). You can use a Guardian of Faith as a cheaper substitute.

In case of a wipe, don't forget to double-check your graveyard immediately after! We have included several enchantments that can come back to your hand or to the battlefield, and in this way we have yet another line to recover quickly from destruction. =)

This list is meant as a budget, mid-tier Voltron deck that can hit like a truck quickly. There are certainly more cards that I have that can power this deck up, but I'm also experimenting with keeping the power level down a bit for a specific play group, but will also be making a more powerful version as well. All the more expensive cards I will list, for now, in the "Maybe Board".

The #1 way to make the deck deadlier is, of course, to exchange any land that comes in tapped with lands that do not. Speed kills, for sure.

The #2 improvement would be to include any Verduran Enchantress-like effects into the deck. Mid-to-late game card draw is brutal in this kind of deck.

For the moment, we are not truly adding combos into the deck to keep the power level down.

That said, we have one semi-combo: Alpha Authority + Madcap Skills = an unblockable creature

lol, there you have it! That's our mini combo!

You can add the following cards for combos if you wish:

Aggravated Assault + Bear Umbra = unlimited attack phases, kill the entire table!
