Maybeboard

Some politicians need a bogeyman. Sometimes they even make him up on their own by black-and-white-painting.

After listening to the Stones (Song: Paint it Black), we can now start talking about the deck.

Goal of this deck is to utilize Breena for card draw and increasing the power of our (indestructible) creatures while simultaneously slowing our opponents down with stax-pieces, making them attack each other due to Breena and keeping a good board control for those opponents, which do not want to play our politic-game with us. This board control is achieved by playing cards Darkest Hour or Painter's Servant to paint all creatures black combined and with a card like Northern Paladin destroy any creature that troubles us. Our creatures will be pumped by Breena, the Demagogue or cards like Ethereal Absolution, so they become more relevant for attacking and we can draw a few cards with Breena.

Sword of Feast and Famine, Sword of Light and Shadow, Sword of Sinew and Steel or Sanctifier en-Vec work well with Breena, the Demagogue. Protection from black on any creatures should not be a problem. Breena, the Demagogue does not target. The only problem is Painter's Servant with any black painted equipment oder aura, but since there are no alternatives with similar effect we don't play, there is no choice. We need to play him.

If you have any idea for cuts due to the maybeboard or any other matching cards, please let me know in the comments.

Changelog abandoned

Out: Grindstone In: Robe of Stars

Reason: The combo of Grindstone and Painter's Servant fits nicely and pushes the power of the deck. Still I don't want to play it, since it pushes the power level so far, that the goal during gameplay becomes finding the combo. I'd like a more casual approach with this deck. Since Breena, the Demagogue often becomes target of opponents removal, a bit more protection, that also keeps the counters and Equipments sticked to her, with Robe of Stars seems quite good.

Out: Darksteel Brute In: Academy Rector

Reason: Darksteel Brute takes too much mana for to little value, even though it is a quite resilient beater. Academy Rector can search for enchantments, which brings great value for the strategy of the deck.

Out: - Urborg Shambler - Stronghold Taskmaster - Kaervek, the Spiteful - Night of Souls' Betrayal - Commander's Insignia - Ethereal Absolution

In: - Exorcist - Northern Paladin - Akroma's Memorial - Torment of Hailfire - Moon-Blessed Cleric - Can't Stay Away

Reason: Urborg Shambler and Stronghold Taskmaster take too much mana and become targets of removal. All in all the (former) strategy of "minusing" our opponent's creature does not seem to work with the slow grow of an orzhov-mana base. That's why Kaervek, the Spiteful and Night of Souls' Betrayal are cut too. In addition to this disadvantage, you easily become the target, when two of the mentioned pieces are on the board. Another disadvantage is that Stuffy Doll becomes - without another pump effect - unplayable. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite ist not cut (yet), since het impact on het own seem ok for the mana cost. Commander's Insignia is cut, since there is no need to increase our creatures power without the cut cards named before.

In contrast to this the cards Exorcist, Northern Paladin and Akroma's Memorial fit in the strategy as well and will provide an substantial amount of board control and therefore protection (not testet yet). Torment of Hailfire is just a good finisher, when our opponents already drained each others life total for cards from Breena, the Demagogue. Moon-Blessed Cleric ist just a (bad) tutor for Darkest Hour.

Ethereal Absolution did not impact the board during the last few games quite as well as I thought. Compared with Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, Ethereal Absolution does not seem to do enough for the beatdown plan. Can't Stay Away is added for more resilience.

Out: - Infernal Darkness - Stuffy Doll In: - Vanquish the Horde - Teysa, Orzhov Scion

Reason: Even though Infernal Darkness is a lot of fun to play, because nobody sees the card coming, it does not do a lot for us, since of primary color is white and we run a lot of land ramp. Vanquish the Horde is relatively cheap mass removal. That fits nicely in our indestructible subtheme. Teysa, Orzhov Scion is not indestructible, which is an disadvantage. On the other side Teysa, Orzhov Scion is an awesome card and the CMC is lower. I think, the combination of Teysa, Orzhov Scion and Darkest Hour does not need any further explanation.

Out: - Darksteel Sentinel In: - Lurrus of the Dream-Den

Reason: By itself Darksteel Sentinel is just a good blocker and beater. In addition with Breena, the Demagogues +1+1-Counters, Darksteel Sentinel becomes a real threat. A big disadvantage of the card is the really high CMC. In the past games it was always better to play smaller spells because Darksteel Sentinel would not have done enough. In comparison with Kaldra Compleat, the Sentinel is a lot worse. Sadly this cut declines our indestructible subtheme, but sacrifices must be done. An alternative cut would be Shatter the Sky, but I think, the mass removal is necessary. Lurrus of the Dream-Den is by itself just a great creature in a deck with about 20 permanent spells that cost 2 or less.

Out: - Tyrite Sanctum - Swamp - Deathbringer Liege - Moon-Blessed Cleric - Plains

In: - Welcoming Vampire - Shattered Sanctum - Ophiomancer - Grim Hireling - Emeria, Shattered Skyclave

Reason: Tyrite Sanctums second ability has not been used once in all my games with this deck. I think it's just to expensive. Also I had enough lands as long as my starting hand had a least enough mana/ramp so cast Breena. Therefore 1 land is cut. Shattered Sanctum is quite a good 2 colored land. Welcoming Vampire will be tested. Deathbringer Liege was a really good card, when I started building the deck. The reason for it was, that it does not collide with Darkest Hour since it hat cast triggers. On the other hand, there are (at this time) only seven white and black cards in the deck. Additionally Deathbringer Liege has been sitting in my hand for a couple of games, since there where always better cards to play. Therefore I add the cheaper, resilient creature-creation machine Ophiomancer, which will be tested in this deck. Moon-Blessed Cleric turned out to be to slow for a tutor in comparison to the other tutors in the deck. Grim Hireling creates a lot of value since this deck tries to attack anyway. Emeria, Shattered Skyclave   is just a better land. There remain enough Plains.

Out: - Swamp - Shambling Vent - Savior of Ollenbock

In: - Takenuma, Abandoned Mire - Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire - Smuggler's Share

Reason: Takenuma, Abandoned Mire ist better than a basic Swamp. There are still enough Swamps to fetch for. Shambling Vent did not prove to be an effektive "target" for Breenas counters. It costs quite a lot to activate and and the land enters the battlefield tapped, which is another disadvantage. Also there is no need for too many "dual"-lands, since we only play two colors. Savior of Ollenbock did not prove to be very good. On the other hand Smuggler's Share seems like an auto-include in all Breena Decks.
