Top 8 FNM 7/19

ChrisHansonBiomancin, 11 years ago

I'm so stoked by tonight's performance that I couldn't wait to post. This was the first FNM for White Boy Aggro, and it was a head-turning success. It was the only non-control deck to make Top 8 which I am pretty proud of, and it stomped a couple staple aggro decks in the process. My final record was 4-2-1 (my opponent & I agreed to draw last round). Turnout was in the high 50s which meant only 6 rounds. Here's the breakdown: Round 1: RWB Midrange L 0-2 This was an interesting deck that relied on a variety of removal spells and a creature base of Boros Reckoner and Aurelia. In game 1, I got him down to 3 life with a Champion doing early work, but two Helixes killed my Champions and Aurelia took over. Game 2 was a nail-biter as I got him to 4 life before a Blood Drinker with 2 combats got back up to 12, and my retaliation of a Beasthunter with 2 Rancors, a 2/2 Champ of Parish and a token came up 1 point shy. Round 2: American Control W 2-0 I was on the play in game 1 and he missed his turn 4 land drop. That should tell you everything you need to know. Game 2 was one of the most bizarre games I've seen as he actually had an answer for all my early threats, but it was my deck that actually came out with the card advantage thanks mostly to Rancor. An Increasing Devotion with Gavony did some damage, then the flashback ended it after he mustered a Verdict. Round 3: Naya Blitz W 2-0 Perhaps the most satisfying win of the night. When I tell people about this deck and they find out I'm not running red, they look at me sideways. In game 1, my Champion of the Parish reigned supreme thanks to Mayor and Paladin w/ Rancor. After an Increasing Devotion, it was over. In game 2, we amassed armies quickly and came to a standstill early, but a Champion of Lambholt and a double-Rancored Beastmaster did quick work. Round 4: Bant Hexproof W 2-0 This matchup was over in ten minutes since it was basically a race that I won handily both times. I had the play in Game 1, and I believe my buildup was Champion-Mayor-Paladin-Commander-Increasing Devotion to his nada-Stalker-Rancor & +2 flying-+2 lifelink. I subbed in Thalia for game 2 which was his play; I went Pilgrim-Thalia-Commander-Paladin& Rancor on Thalia- Devotion. Yup, 2 straight Commander/Devotion game-enders. His play was hindered by Thalia severely: zilch-Stalker-2 drop Rancor-2 drop Rancor-+2 lifelink which he never used on offense. Another convincing win over a Top 8 contender. Round 5: GW Aggro W 2-1 In game 1, his Strangleroot Geist and Loxidon Smiter were completely overmatched by a Champion-Mayor-Paladin curve. In game 2, he went Pilgrim-Smiter-then his next 2 turns were the Angel that gives everyone exalted. Talk about the nuts; my sideboarded Intrepid Hero was too late to make a difference. In game 3, I came back with a mean Champion of Lambholt/ Rancored Beastmaster combo w/ 2 Mayors that managed to out-huge a paired Wolfir Silverheart and Smiter to secure a Top 8 bid. Round 6 friendly draw Top 8: American Control feat. Aetherling L 1-2 I was on the draw in game 1, and he was short on white land so he missed his chance at a Verdict. My Champion-gather the Townsfolk-Mayor&Rancor curve was fast enough to force him into a t3 Snapcaster Mage as his first spell to avoid the Transform. However, I was too ballsy in game 2 as I took a 2 land hand with no green and was mana screwed. In game 3, I got off to another fast start with Champion-Champion&Pilgrim-Paladin start with the play, but he got himself a Miracle on turn 3 and Terminus'ed my Top 4 hopes. I did actually have a decent second run with a Beastmaster and some Townsfolk but he got a Verdict to stop the bleeding at 6 life. It took him like 10 turns to finally get his precious Aetherling, but my Devotion never came as my topdecked creatures faced burn spell after burn spell.

Tweaked the deck a bit. Dropped Font of Mythos, Howling Mine and Kami of the Crescent Moon so this deck is far less of a "hug deck" and much more threatening. Did away with the Splinter Twin combo and added in Arcanis the Omnipotent (fav. card so it's about time) and Mind Over Matter. I just felt like that combo was a little less "cheap" and fits the basic goal of the deck itself which is to draw like a madman. Also added in Jace, Memory Adept and Tamiyo, the Moon Sage. All of their abilities are useful here (besides JMA's 0 ability which I will probably never take advantage of) and I figured it was about time I added a couple decent planeswalkers to this thing.

These additions coupled with the price spike of Remand and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth have increase the overall price of this deck, but, suffice to say, I would still consider this deck fairly "budget friendly."

I have found through play-testing over the last few weeks that these changes have allowed the deck to be a helluva lot more competitive in 1V1 games where, in the past, it matched up poorly in those situations especially against fast-paced agro decks.

I still have 4 cards that I have yet to get my hands on that I am 100% sure I want to add to this deck (Mind Over Matter, Viseling, Blasphemous Act and Command Tower.) I will probably look to make those additions within the next month.

FNM#4: 12th. Place

Little over 30 players tonight. I didn't do as well as I would have liked. I'm not sure if I need to be running Avacyn's Pilgrim or even Loxodon Smiter or Vampire Nighthawk. I put Devour Flesh into the deck over Tribute to Hunger and liked it a lot better. I'm not sure if I want to run Doom Blade just yet, simply because of the number of Bant Hexproof and Aristocrats players in my area.

Round One: Naya Blitz-- 1-2
Round Two: Izzet Combo-- 0-2
Round Three: G/B Aggro-- 2-0
Round Four: U/B Mill-- 2-0
Round Five: Orzhov Aggro-- 2-1

Welp, played today, made a couple of updates, and did rather well in comparison.

Match 1: Grixis vs. Orzhov Festering Newt Combo (2-0)

Win by mill in both games using the newly added Jace, Memory Adept. Easily removed any threats he had (which weren't in a high number).

Match 2: Grixis vs. Esper Control (1-2)

Game 1: Best game ever. Neither of us were drawing win conditions- only a lot of counterspells. He won with perilous use of Augur of Bolas for 1 damage. The funnest game I've played in a long time.

Game 2: He knocked me down to one with a bunch of creatures with Runechanter's Pike, but I managed to remove his attackers long enough to pull out an AEtherling for the win.

Game 3: Can't do much with 5 land and drawing both of my AEtherling's and Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius.

Match 3: Grixis vs. Selesyna Tokens

Game 1: Win by Master of Cruelties and a burn spell.

Game 2: Can't do much with 4 land (again!).

Game 3: Win by Master of Cruelties again and a burn spell retrieved by Jace, Memory Adept's -7. I think he deserves a spot in this deck now.

Took out a lot of the populate stuff and progressing more towards aggro and removal. Prey Upon to fight flying. Skylasher to deal with blue plus a somewhat of a "budget" Voice of Resurgence if you will..lol. Did alright at FNM. Should probably remove my mana ramps.

I may be moving Assemble the Legion to the sideboard and running 2 Bonfire of the Damned instead. It seems that I side them out almost all the time except when I play against control. Although, Assemble the Legion is great against Jund. Either way, I will be testing this list more and try to streamline it before next FNM.

FNM Report 7/19/13

mrbloo1848, 11 years ago

There were 6 rounds tonight and I finished 11th, just out of top 8 with a 3-2-1 record :(

I misplayed in one of the games, which costed me the match. Learned from mistake. Boo.

R1: American Flash (Draw 1-1-1)

He got game 1 as predicted since this deck is terrible against him pre-board. I was sitting on 67 soldier tokens from Assemble the Legion but couldn't do anything about it since he had Jace, Architect of Thought on the field and I couldn't resolve bigger creatures. He eventually castes Warleader's Helix twice over a couple turns then double Snapcaster Mage on both copies for exactly lethal. In game 2 I was able to cast Rest in Peace in turn 3 and Slaughter Games twice in a row in turns 4-5 which took out his Sphinx's Revelation and AEtherling, which pretty much crippled his deck out of win-cons. I was at 4 life and all he needed was a Warleader's Helix but he couldn't get it. Time was called when we drew out opening hand of game 3 so we shook hands and took the draw.

R2: White Weenies (L 0-2)

Lost game 1 when I couldn't get anything going with Imposing Sovereign on the field. Couldn't play creatures to block while he swung in 2-4 damage at a time until I died thanks to Brave the Elements. Game 2 I could have won but I made a couple terrible mistakes that costed me the game and thus the match. I swung in with Boros Reckoner into his Boros Reckoner and when he gave it first strike, I forgot about my play plan for the turn and also gave him first strike and with that I was missing my fifth mana to cast one of the 5-drops I had in my hand, namely Blood Baron of Vizkopa who was a bomb against him. That let him snowball since he played Imposing Sovereign the next turn and I could no longer play my creatures down to block. Instead of playing Devour Flesh before Angel of Jubilation resolved, which let him sacrifice Imposing Sovereign who was paired with Silverblade Paladin and have him pair with the angel instead, which was huge for him. Bad mistakes are bad.

R3: Wolf Run Bant (W 2-1)

Lost game 1 to Thragtusk and other stuff swinging through while he counters and removes my stuff. Won game 2 when I once again Slaughter Games twice to remove his Sphinx's Revelation and Thragtusk after having played Sin Collector the turn before, removing Supreme Verdict. His deck was dead at that point. Game 3 the same thing happened. I caught the Sin Collector (who got countered) into two Slaughter Games. Wolf Run Bant isn't very good without those two cards since he runs mostly control cards but I took out his win-cons.

R4: Dropped (W 2-0)

Guy went to draft instead and dropped from tournament.

R5: Naya Humans (L 0-2)

The blitz is too fast and too furious. Not too much to talk about here. I was ahead in game 2 but he eventually got enough creatures out to outbeat my lifelinking blockers thanks to Frontline Medic.

R6: Rakdos Demons (W 2-0)

Rakdos Demons deck I played before. We were playing for fun at that point since we were both out of the money. Blood Baron of Vizkopa handily beat that deck since all of the creatures she runs are black and most if not all of her removals are also black.

With that, I will be changing my sideboard:

+2 Rolling Temblor

-2 Pithing Needle

I really needed those Rolling Temblors that won me the match against monowhite a week earlier. It is a blow out against those decks. Turns out I didn't need or draw into Pithing Needle at all (save the game 1 against that Jace, Architect of Thought). So far, though, I haven't run into any Bant Hexproof again since that last time I was playing BUG deck so I may be swapping those two sac-removals for the needles.

FNM - 2/2/1

Idhrendir, 11 years ago

Round 1 - RWB - DRAW - Game 1 I mulled to six, starting the game off without many answers and not on the play. But I drew into some, the most important being Jace, Architect of Thought, since my opponent had an Assemble the Legion out, something that I cannot take care of pre-siding. I just kept +1ing Jace to keep his soldiers from dealing damage. Luckily, he never drew into a Dreadbore. Game 1 ended with him having 67 soldiers and me having Jace at 17 counters. Game 2 started off terribly for me, with him casting Rest in Peace turn 2, Slaughter Games turn 4, and another Slaughter Games turn five, taking away my Sphinx's Revelation and AEtherling. All I could do was ping him with Haunted Plate Mail the whole game until I lost. We did not have time for Game 3, so we drew.

Round 2 - RWB - 0/2 - Game 1 He pounded me with Thundermaw Hellkite. Game 2 He pounded me with two Thundermaw Hellkite. Enough said.

Round 3 - WUR - 2/0 - Game 1 I was able to out-control him the entire game until I was able to pick at him with AEtherling and Warleader's Helix. Game 2 I sided in more counters and Jace, Memory Adept. I had answers for everything he tried to do and the game ended in the same way as the first.

Round 4 - R/W Humans - 1/2 - Game 1 I was able to control him until I could do my thing with AEtherling. Creatures he cast usually went away the turn they came out or the succeeding one. Game 2 was a different story. He sided in Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, of course. However, I misplayed by not playing my third land untapped with a Counterflux in hand, which would have been perfect for that Thalia he cast the next turn. He ate my face the rest of the game. Game 3 was more back and forth, but I ended up losing due to a well timed Boros Charmfoil to my Supreme Verdict. The game ended with him swinging with a bunch of soldiers from Assemble the Legion, something I did not side for against him.

Round 5 - No show - Win - The guy never showed up, so I got the win. Not that it meant anything. I did not have enough points to make Top 8, nor would I be able to get enough if I won my next match, prompting me to drop. The rest of the night I spent playing EDH.

Modifications

Idhrendir, 11 years ago

I have taken out the single Boros Charmfoil and the three Think Twice and replaced them with another Warleader's Helix and three Quicken, respecitvely. Warleader's Helix did a lot more for me than the Boros Charmfoil ever did, getting my opponent down in life and me up. The Quicken I am thinking of using as a replacement for Think Twice after the rotation and I wanted to test it out.

Overhaul

Mandalore6311, 11 years ago

This deck performs rather decently at FNM and dominates against my friends; I discovered the nice teamwork between Aurelia and Angelic Skirmisher. However, I got a ton of relevant cards at FNM and am remaking the deck, so much that I consider it a new creation. Here is the link: Mandalore's Boros Blitzkrieg 2.0

3rd place FNM, 4-1

Long_Con, 11 years ago

Round 1 - played a Simic deck with Prime Speaker Zegana, Wolfir Silverheart, and some other things I don't remember, but I lost the first game, and sideboarded in some stuff, won the next 2.

Round 2 - Played a Rakdos deck - tried to Curse of Death's Hold me 3 times in a row first game, countered one, and then managed to get Tamiyo, the Moon Sage's ultimate off with a Dissipate in hand, and Primordial Hydra on the board. Sweet. Won 2-0.

Round 3 - Played against RBW in an epic matchup, but I got it 2-0.

Round 4 - I was worried going into the UW Control/Miracle matchup, but after losing the first round to Entreat the Angels, I adjusted my strategy and was able to out-control him, mainly due to his lack of counterspells. Azorius Charm, Temporal Mastery, Think Twice, Devastation Tide, Terminus, Tamiyo, the Moon Sage... beat them down 2-1.

Round 5 - Lost 1-2 to an (almost) mono-black deck. Gloom Surgeon was a surprising hurtful card, Crypt Ghastfoil, Doom Blade, Liliana of the Veil, up to Griselbrand... I was able to deal with the Gris, but little hits from Gloomy and one or two Corrupts defeated me 2-0.

I'm going to alter my sideboard to include a few Negates for times like this.

First FNM run

Gat0rman15, 11 years ago

When 4-2 tonight taking 6th place among 34.

Round 1 was a bye, free 2-0, was a bitter win to start the day off.

Round 2 was a 2-0 win against a R/G aggro the just could keep up with my creatures and my burn did in all his threats.

Round 3 was a 0-2 lose to R/G aggro, really fast. Game 1 I lost to a Rakdos Crackler that had 2 Madcap Skills on it, couldn't block. Game 2 turn 2 played 2 Burning-Tree Emissary into Scavaging Ooze, couldn't race him. Got him to 3 life with Searing Spear in hand while tapped out but he ended it that turn with an Ash Zealot

Round 4 was a 2-1 win against the Selesnya Event deck lost game 1 to Lingering Souls into Intangible Virtues the won game 2 and 3 with Legion Loyalist.

Round 5 was a 2-0 win against a Naya mid range. Game 1 he trade Voice of Resurgence with Rakdos Cackler then his Boros Reckoner for mine. he dealt 3 to me and I kill his elemental token, clearing the board. After that, I killed him withhaste creatures. Game 2 I got all my good one drops out early with some Spike Jesters and then finished with Legion Loyalist and used Dreadbore one his only creature, Gore-Clan Rampager.

Round 5 (Top 8) was a 0-2 lost to G/W aggro. Kept playing Experiment One, Dryad Militant and Loxodon Smiter and I just couldn't get around the big creature. Game 2 was the same thing, event with 4 Dreadbore and 2 Mizzium Mortars sided in.

All in all aggro was the most popular there and found myself just not knowing what to side in against it. I'm fine side boarding for all other match ups, just not really other aggro. All in all I was satisfied with 5th.

Tournament at MIA Gaming Lounge - 37-20-13

thyhax, 11 years ago

Thanks for all your help guys! I couldn't have pulled off a second place finish without you guys.

10 people, 4 rounds.

Round 1: Jund Midrange

This one really wasn't supposed to be a win, Game 1 he got screwed over on a mull to 5 with one land, didn't draw any. Game 2 went smoothly for him, he landed 2 Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip, and I only had a Rakdos Shred-Freak with two of my sided-in Volcanic Strength attached. After he landed the second one, I drew another land to add to my 6 on board, and I couldn't cast a spell to prevent flipping into Ravager of the Fells  Flip. I swung, brought him into Searing Spear range, but alas, no such luck. He swung for lethal the next turn. Game 3 was worse, he was absolutely mana flooded, even after a T2 Farseek. He couldn't get a creature to save his life total, and I burned him out. He later showed me his 3 Dreadbore and 3 Abrupt Decay, neither of which he saw.

1-0, 2-1

Round 2: Junk Tokens

Game 1 showed us a quick start of a Call of the Conclave followed by Wake the Reflections. Luckily I had an early board state of T1 Rakdos Cackler unleashed, followed by a Firefist Striker T2, and a Legion Loyalist and Rakdos Shred-Freak T3. I swung for lethal T5, none of his tokens able to block. Game 2 was closer, but not by much. T1 unleashed Cackler, T2 Spike Jester and a T3 Loyalist nearly sealed the deal, but a T4 perfect curve-out into Hellrider stole the win.

2-0, 3-1

Round 3: G/W ...Conjurer's Closet?

This was a dreaded matchup against the local shop's pro (and first place finisher of the night), who was playing a rogue homebrew of Thragtusk, Fiend Hunter, Conjurer's Closet, Angel of Serenity, and Sigarda, Host of Herons, not to mention Armada Wurm. Game 1 was extremely close, with his T4 Arbor Elf-assisted Thragtusk meeting my lucky mainboard Skullcrack (I knew it! It is mainboard-worthy!) He quickly stabilized, despite me putting him to 2 with a board of 2 Firefist Striker, Spike Jester, and Rakdos Cackler, with both his Acidic Slime blowing up 3 of my Blood Cryptfoils (I had a Doom blade ready sadface) and his Fiend Hunter exiling Thragtusk, Conjurer's Closeting the Hunter to gain life, a token, and decreasing my board. I couldn't do anything at that point, especially with a hardcasted Angel of Serenity forcing me to scoop. G2, I kept a 5 land hand with a sided Slaughter Games, and a Searing Spear, thinking if I just drew creatures as usual, I'd be fine. Boy, was I wrong. Neither of us did anything for the first 3 turns, but I curved into Slaughter Games fine, foolishly naming Thragtusk. He revealed his hand: Restoration Angel, Armada Wurm, and Sigarda, Host of Herons. I felt awful as I searched his deck to find: Two Thragtusk. D'oh! He threw up the Resto EOT, and landed the Wurm on his. I slammed a Mark of Mutiny off the top, but even grabbing a 6/6 trampler wasn't enough, after he landed Sigarda.

2-1, 3-3

Round 4: Esper Control

Our local Esper Control player, a fairly seasoned veteran, was my last match of the night. Both games, I couldn't have asked for better. Cackler T1, Striker T2, Jester and Loyalist T3 (he Azorius Charmed the Loyalist), and a Hellrider T4 killed him off. Game 2 was just as good. Cackler, Jester, Jester + cackler, Hellrider, and then a Shock with him at 2.

3-1. 5-3

Since I lost only to the person who took first, my tiebreakers were phenomenal.

All in all, a great night. Many regulars were there, many laughs were had, and to top it all off, I pocketed 3 packs and a promo Rakdos Cackler that I've been looking for for so long.

Great Boros Aggro Burn

PrinceOfWinterfell, 11 years ago

This is a very powerful deck. Very Simple but highly effective. First, you have over 16 removal, then, 8 one drop that can evolve into something pretty good. You want to have a Figure Of Destiny or a Student of Warfare first turn. Second turn you have a 3/3 first strike or a 2/2, you bolt your enemy's blocker and do damage. This deck contains very good low cost creature and enough burn to remove all creature sand also enough to finish you opponent. Leave Feedback please
