Long Ago, there was a deck in which Skullbriar, the Walking Grave ruled! But one day, Skullbriar and his undead army came face to face with another graveyard deck that was better... faster... and stronger than it had ever seen. And so, Skullbriar conceded rule of his undead army to Varolz, the Scar-Striped . Varolz's army was small, but each creature was mightier than most, and Varolz only made them mightier. By exploiting the creatures that had already passed, Varolz used their power to strengthen the still living members of his army! Skullbriar did not approve of this battle strategy.... So he sought out another.. Another Elemental like himself who would value the lives of the creatures who died, and who would resurrect them, rather than exploit them. It was then, that Skullbriar found Muldrotha, the Gravetide and pleaded for him to lead the army that once belonged to Skullbriar... He agreed. Varolz was pushed out, and Muldrotha now leads on as the leader of the great undead, thus, ending Skullbriar's revenge.
- I hope you enjoyed my little story that has absolutely nothing to do with MTG lore, but it was a fun history of the evolution of my graveyard deck. - The strategy here is a simple Muldrotha deck that can put things in the Graveyard on it's own so that it's independent, and then cast those things from the graveyard. - Cards like Entomb are functional tutors with Muldrotha on the board. Jarad's Orders is improved greatly with Muldrotha, effectively tutoring for two cards. - There will also be a few other reanimate cards, just in case Muldrotha becomes a target (which is likely in my playgroup), so that we can continue with our strategy of reanimating things for value. - The ultimate goal is to sacrifice, or let things die, and play them for value, or take advantage of value on the battlefield to harm the opponents. There are some shenanigan cards in here that make the game fun to play, specifically Takklemaggot . Otherwise, the deck is reanimation value!
- Cards that I can play, and then sacrifice for their ability, and then play AGAIN for value are Spore Frog , Quest for the Gravelord , Siren Stormtamer , Caustic Caterpillar and more! - Cards that are just good to replay if they die (or get sacrificed to Yahenni, Undying Partisan ) include Reef Worm , terastadon, Protean Hulk and so many more. - Of course we have to have cards like Animate Dead , Meren of Clan Nel Toth , and others to bring things back when Muldrotha isn't on the battlefield.
- How are we going to pay for all of this value you ask? Well, Wayward Swordtooth , Ramunap Excavator , Muldrotha and many other ramp cards are going to help us play lots of lands throughout the game, hopefully enough to play 2-3 spells per turn. - To conclude, this deck is the next iteration of my very first Commander deck that I built a couple years ago and it may be the final iteration, or it could get another facelift later on. Very few of the cards are the same anymore, but Skullbriar will always remain as he is close to my heart, and the idea of Graveyard action will always be at the heart of the deck.
