Dominaria and Slivers... —April 29, 2018

Let's address the Pheldegryff in the room here - what does Dominaria as a whole mean for this deck, and Slivers in particular? In my opinion...relatively little. But, given that this deck does rely on control and requires a good amount of recursion, here are some cards that are worth note:

  • Divination: Draw is kind of a weakness in this deck. Originally Rhystic Study was meant to fill that role, but at the same time i'm experimenting with Mystic Remora as well. Divination may be a one and done spell, but it guarantees cards.
  • Karn's Temporal Sundering: I just find this one interesting...not necessarily a "must have", but taking an extra turn and bouncing something important is good. The legendary stipulation sucks though.
  • Time of Ice: Slowing down the opponent is always a good thing, depending on the commander im facing though, it may not matter. Still an interesting card for the art at least.
  • Unwind: I don't know if this is a strictly better Negate, but it is always nice to untap land. This could make for a good play if I were to have creatures out and Gaea's Cradle in play. It may not make a huge impact, but it does seem interesting. I may swap it in for Swan Song or Negate.
  • The Eldest Reborn: Creature removal? check. Disrupt opponent's hand? Check. Steal a big creature? Also Check. While this card may not make the biggest plays, it does seem interesting. But again, it's only something to experiment with.
  • Soul Salvage: Another decent graveyard recursion option. Perhaps better than Aphetto Dredging, but definitely a good option to experiment with.
  • Yawgmoth's Vile Offering: Another interesting option for graveyard recursion. The legendary stipulation sucks, but at least the art is pretty. Again, another card to experiment with.
  • Gaea's Blessing: More interesting graveyard recursion. While it may not be as great as the previous options, it does draw you a card. Eh, at least the art is pretty.
  • Then there's everything else that user:Delta-117 said...eh...this set doesn't really mean all too much for this deck...but at least there are pretty cards. Maybe there's something I missed? Let me know in the comments.

FlamingoBrown, thanks for the compliment and +1. One day i'll surpass the great professor of TolarianCommunityCollege as the highest rated Sliver deck of tapped out. His deck is a great starting point though, as I got some good ideas from his deck.

You are welcome. I love how you explain how stuff works in your deck and keep it updated. Very detailed.

What are your thoughts about Acidic Sliver?

Mortlocke says... #5

My thoughts on Acidic Sliver? Well, it's for a 2/2 which is okay, but it's ability is...so so at best. Especially when you have the likes of Necrotic Sliver who is seen as strictly better for a slightly higher cost. Acidic Sliver would be a good sac outlet for the infinite mana/creature Sliver Queen + Mana Echoes combo though. While you won't be able to swing with any of your infinite 1/1's on the turn you create them, you could just sacrifice them all to kill your opponents. In that specific instance, I could see it's usefulness - but it just doesn't have the flexibility to be a worthy addition, at least in my opinion.

What are your thoughts FlamingoBrown? Do you have a rebuttal?

I agree with you. Acidic Sliver is kinda a one trick pony while you can have a lot more flex with Necrotic Sliver just paying 1 more mana. Thank you for explaining :)

Made an account just so i could comment. This deck has became a personal gem for me. It's simple goes with my play style and its 5 colors. It has a swing wide aspect which i perfectly love. Pretty much it can do anything. Only issue is that i don't ever think i will be able to own this deck. The pricing is so insane it makes me cry. D: Any ideas on making it somewhat budget so i can build on it overtime.

Glad to see your a fan of the wonderous hive also k_drake. I also happen to have a Sliver Overlord deck of my own, although mine is still a lot cheaper. Keep in mind however that LVL_666 has also chosen to bling out this deck nearly entirely, and thus the price you see on here is much more than what it would could actually be with a non-foil, non-masterpiece/expedition version of the decklist.

The first and most obvious things to avoid would be the original duals, (i.e Underground Sea, Volcanic Island, Tropical Island etc...), next you make do without Mana Crypt, Cavern of Souls, Wheel of Fortune, Yawgmoth's Will, and Mana Drain which should bring the deck down by a huge margin.

There's is such a vast amount of lands to choose from that could be suitable early on, including: the vivid cycle (Vivid Crag, Vivid Grove), the tri-lands (Seaside Citadel, Savage Lands, Jungle Shrine, and so on), then there's ones I use to use like Transguild Promenade, Exotic Orchard, Forbidden Orchard, Rupture Spire, Evolving Wilds / Terramorphic Expanse, Ash Barrens (highly recommend), and the panorama cycle (Bant Panorama, Jund Panorama, Esper Panorama, etc).

You can then make use out of the signets, Golgari Signet, Izzet Signet, etc) and perhaps use most of the combinations (prioritize the ones that have green). Anyways I know I have told you a Lot of information to read and consider, and so let me give you a good visual of what a starting point could look like:

This deck by the Professor I do recommend you consider as a base, and from there start as I have done, which was slowly acquire all the slivers (and imo minus the queen, and legion at least at first), I actually was quite fortunate to receive most of the slivers needed for my list from a friend who had their very own Sliver Overlord deck and he sold/traded me eventually most of it as he was getting out of commander. I picked up stuff like Gemhide Sliver, Manaweft Sliver, Necrotic Sliver, Harmonic Sliver, Heart Sliver, Galerider Sliver and Crystalline Sliver if I recall first by cash and standard trades.

Then I got a few things like a Chromatic Lantern, Merciless Eviction, Heartstone, and Training Grounds for more additions. Eventually I started with getting the shocks and fetches (the khans fetches are cheaper) again the cheaper ones like Windswept Heath, Wooded Foothills, Temple Garden, Overgrown Tomb, Hallowed Fountain, and worked my way up having more than half of them (I'm currently only missing 3 fetches and 3 shocklands).

I got my Sliver Queen and Sliver Legion from the same friend who took apart his sliver list (it's unfortunate he sold it's entire manabase and then just kept the slivers before I even met him at my lgs though), after I had all the rest of the creatures and up until that point I focused more on an aggro/voltron strategy. I bought him some very pricey modern staples (2x Chalice of the Void before there reprint and traded an Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger for these 2 slivers and to nearly finish a whole deck to play for modern :)

You can then later like i'm soon about to do myself soon I think, start to buy things like a Mana Crypt, Mana Drain, Demonic Tutor, Wheel of Fortune, etc to make the deck more competitive. To give you an idea where i'm at, here's my decklist (I'm missing 16 cards in all from it) also that's cheaper than what you see here:

I did not exactly plan on writing essentially a book on this for you lol, and so I apoligize. In summary start by acquiring if you don't already own any these above suggested lands, and start acquiring all the slivers you can, I recommend get ones like Sliver Hivelord, Diffusion Sliver and or Crystalline Sliver, Blur Sliver, Gemhide Sliver + Manaweft Sliver, Bonescythe Sliver, Syphon Sliver, Heart Sliver, Harmonic Sliver, Galerider Sliver + Winged Sliver, and others like Predatory Sliver, Sinew Sliver, Muscle Sliver all of which are pretty cheap. Then you will want Chromatic Lantern, plenty of signets, Darksteel Ingot, Commander's Sphere, Fellwar Stone, maybe the newly reprinted Coalition Relic which is a bit cheaper now. Then start upgrading the manabase(Mana Confluence, City of Brass, Unclaimed Territory, Sliver Hive, Ancient Ziggurat are all a good start. Then go with maybe getting the filterlands which thankfully have been reprinted and are now a lot cheaper,(Flooded Grove, Twilight Mire,...) and the shocks/fetches prioritizing the ones for green like Breeding Pool, Overgrown Tomb, Windswept Heath, Wooded Foothills because you will want green I would say more than any of your colours to cast stuff like Manaweft Sliver + Gemhide Sliver, Kodama's Reach/Rampant Growth/Cultivate etc. Once you have most if not all of the slivers and the mana base then you can go back to refining the deck with medium to high end upgrades like Mana Crypt, Volrath's Stronghold, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Pact of Negation, and such. Personally in my case i'm refraining from the original duels for budget reasons myself as I can't ever see myself getting enough use out of them to make them worth it fully. Anyways I hope this gives you lots to think about!

(Final note), consider Spirit of Resistance at least initially if you think you can either protect it with counterspells or in a meta where enchantment removal won't be an issue :)

Well that is lame, I typed out another 9+ lines and I go to "preview your comment" and it asked me to sign back in... In summary k_drake I was saying I meant to add that you should early on acquire a Paradox Engine which i'm sure you can figure out why if you look at your commander + Gemhide Sliver / Manaweft Sliver / Cryptolith Rite(buy this one in addition to the slivers for redundancy due to lacking many tutors, among other cards) And Heart Sliver / Blur Sliver.

Also acquire Cascading Cataracts. Let me know if you have any other questions and i'm sure I or someone else can give you help. But additionally consider checking the website edhrec.com if your not already familiar for average sliver decklists.

k_drake, sorry about taking so long to respond to you! That was an awesome compliment, thank you. As you can tell I spent way too much time building this deck page, and way too much money building this deck :P In truth, I got lucky with most of these cards...then I basically dipped my pinky toe into the creepy creepy world of MTG: Finance and Investment. Only enough to get the masterpieces I wanted at a sane price. Delta-117 was absolutely right in his advice and assessment of the true cost of this deck. You really don't have to pay that much to build a deck based off of this model, as the majority of the cost is really the manabase. However, please allow me to add my two cents- here are some alternative land choices that have alot of synergy and are a fraction of the cost:

  • The Mirage Fetchlands: Honestly, these are the 2nd best fetchlands in all of MtG. With these you can find Basics, but at the same time you can find any of the Non-basic lands with a land "type".

  • Shock Lands: Probably the most expensive option for typed lands outside of Original Duals. These average at about $10.00 to $20.00.

  • Battle Lands: These are probably the most affordable of the typed lands, running between $3.50 and $6.00 bucks. In addition to these you must run basics, but yeah...these are at a great price point. Even better is that if you're feeling spendy, you can get an expedition for about $20 to $30 on average each. There is one big drawback here though, the cycle isn't complete.

  • Dual Colored Cycling Lands: So, these are not quite as great as the previously mentioned as they will always come in tapped no matter what. The only real boon here is that you can cycle them. These are also at a pretty decent price point as well, averaging at about $2.50 or more each due to them still being in standard. If you have some already, then include them. If not, I wouldn't go out my way to acquire any of these. Unfortunately, these are also an incomplete cycle.

Those are all the lands I could name off the top of my head. Delta-117, did I miss anything? As for other parts and pieces, i'll give some more consideration to those, and write on them later. Hope this helps!

Additional note k_drake, for my prices I went with ebay. Sure, a lot of people tend to steer clear of the place, but if you know what to look for in card quality then it's easy to spot the fakes. However, places like Card Kingdom, TCGPlayer, and Cardshark are viable options as well. Even better, you don't have to worry (as much) about cards being fake. They have more robust systems in place to prevent fakes from being sold in the first place.

Thanks for all the feedback. I will most definitely will try to build a sliver deck. I have been playing it on xmage and absolutely love it. I haven't mastered much except for summoning every monster in my deck with a billion tokens but I know it can do so much more. I will easily take your advice as magic can quite literally steal away all your money.
