Aftermath...
markszncd, 8 years ago
While expecting a aftermath counterspell to be spoiled with Hour of Devastation preview, I suddenly thought of another aftermath card from Amonkhet which can be just as good as a aftermath counterspell....

Once I've played a few games with this build I'll post a breakdown of the deck and let you know how it goes. - WFO

Haldarious, 8 years ago
-Imperious Perfect, Sapphire Drake, Stingerfling Spider
+Steady Progress, Crushing Vines, Growth Spasm
Took out some stuff with limited use for some more broad things and utility. Will take out Steady Progress for Tezzeret's Gambit if I come across a copy.

Oreskos Explorer -> Flickerwisp
Oreskos Explorer never seems to work out, and Flickerwisp was definitely at the head of the line to be added.

Metallic Mimic?
Callmegkill, 8 years ago
I was thinking about the utility of Metallic Mimic and if it would be a better turn 2, or be more useful than, either Honor of the Pure or Leonin Skyhunter. Any thoughts on the matter?
Tournament Updates
cjmarshman, 8 years ago
So I have played this now in two separate Modern tourneys at my LGS. Current record with the deck is 4-4. First time out I went 3-1-0, and then most recently took it to an 1-3-0. Played against a lot of Death's Shadow variants, all of which I have won every match against(except one to bad starting hands). Green Stompy and U/W Control are two that I have had a harder time against, and have encouraged my looking into alternative plays for this deck..

more focus
RijtBart, 8 years ago
I decided to skip the mill strategy. It was a very marginal thing in this deck to begin with so it had way to little impact. Keening Stone and sphinx tutelage are out for that reason.
I finally got my hands on a Vicious Shadows so I added a few boardwipes. Also added a Horn of Greed and Ebony Owl Netsuke because it's all about card advantage and getting punished for that many cards in your hand. Combined with Vicious Shadows and a few wipes it can win me a game or two. The main reason to play this deck is still to have fun, so no major combo or anything like that.

Cheers to Devastation!
theLegendred, 8 years ago
With the Hour of Devastation release a little more than 2 weeks away, I've been no less than impressed with what I've seen spoiled from the set so far. The 3 nameless plague gods, Nicol Bolas as a 4 ability Planeswalker, and of course (drools*) those invocations. Yaaaasssss!
Along with these wonderful things, Torment of Hailfire is absolutely nuts. As soon the set comes out and as soon as my two diabolical hands get a hold of that thing, that card will be going into this deck. I'm strongly considering swapping out Corrupt for it.
In addition to this change, I'm sideboarding Gonti, Lord of Luxury. He may have great synergy in this deck, but I've been thinking that he's not intimidating or game-changing enough during the times I've used him. Since there's plenty of ramp an graveyard recursion to go around, I'm substituting him for Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger.
And while I'm at it, I am going to substitute Buried Ruin for Dark Depths to see how well a Marit Lage will work. This swap will give my Vesuva and Thespian's Stage some more usability.
All in all, I hope that these changes will work for the better. Besides, l want this deck to be more than capable of putting the fear of God into... well... a god or god-pharaoh.
I'm always open to suggestions, so please feel free to give me your 2 cents.
Ps: I've made some cuts to the Sideboard and Maybeboard.

Minor changes
Pyronixcore, 8 years ago
I've removed the two remaining Forest, two Selesnya Guildgate, two Selesnya Sanctuary, the Spear of Heliod and Ajani's Chosen.
To replace them, I have added two Sunpetal Grove, two Stirring Wildwood, two Temple of Plenty, and two Trostani, Selesnya's Voice.

Overhaul
ctenochaetus, 8 years ago
In spite of this being my most competitive deck, I've not done a total review of it in a long time. When I first made this deck, I was pretty much a beginner, and I have a better idea now of what works and what doesn't. That said, this was a pretty huge revision.
Out: Put Away, Cancel, Mindswipe, Flame Rift, Goblin Electromancer, Jhoira of the Ghitu, Ral Zarek, Invoke the Firemind, Izzet Chronarch, Flame Fusillade, Psychic Spiral, Sphinx of Jwar Isle, Mizzium Transreliquat, Clone, Blue Sun's Zenith, Guttersnipe, Mizzium Mortars, Quicksilver Dagger, Nivix Guildmage, Library of Leng, three Islands, two Mountains
In: Arjun, the Shifting Flame, Basilisk Collar, Brainstorm, Charmbreaker Devils, Confirm Suspicions, Counterflux, Dismiss into Dream, Gorgon's Head, Glorious End, Kefnet the Mindful, Pull from Tomorrow, Staff of Nin, Suffocating Blast, Swerve, The Locust God, Thought Vessel, Vizier of Many Faces, Tandem Lookout, Price of Progress, Baral, Chief of Compliance, Seal of the Guildpact, Evolving Wilds, Terramorphic Expanse, Grixis Panorama, Swiftwater Cliffs.
Keeping a few of the swap-outs in the maybeboard - really wasn't sure about taking them out. Keeping an eye out for anything that plays badly for another swap-in. I like Swerve and Glorious End but they're my top two suspects to swap back out.

Thoughts For Updates
cjmarshman, 8 years ago
I added cards to the maybeboard as possible swaps for some cards in the current deck. Debating the use of Vexing Devil over Goblin Guide, and taking out a couple Atarka's Commands and the Simian Spirit Guides for Manamorphose.

Ugh, did we really ignore all of the 2-drop ramp? Rampant Growth, Farseek, Nature's Lore, Sakura-Tribe Elder, even Simic Signet and Mind Stone.

Trinkets Ahoy
Haldarious, 8 years ago
-Typhoid Rats, Swamp, Annihilate
+Trinket Mage, Darksteel Citadel, Infiltration Lens
Trinket Mage actually does some decent work. It can fetch mill (Altar of the Brood, Codex Shredder), mana (Sol Ring, Darksteel Citadel) or stuff to suit up Wrexial (Infiltration Lens). Considering Brittle Effigy as well.
