This was a deck in standard where you got 7 mana powerstones for Cogwork Assembler right?

There are some interesting alternatives in modern - untap effects, Saheeli Rai and Saheeli, Sublime Artificer. Clock of Omens shenanigans, Voltaic Construct or Aura of Dominion shenanigans with Singing Bell Strike as a combined removal/combo piece, trying to stick a Dramatic Reversal on a turn with temporary clones. Voltaic Key/Manifold Key can do a lot too.

In terms of powerstone alternatives, Gilded Lotus and Nyx Lotus is popular, while Liquimetal Torque opens up creature combos. Chromatic Orrery is pretty much built for this kind of combo.

Cloning effects - Mirage Mirror, Mirrormade, Mizzium Transreliquat, Prototype Portal are notable.

There is a lot to work with in terms of artifact support, even for cloning, so best of luck.

Cool deck. You could use something like Mizzium Transreliquat to get out a second copy of Myr Galvanizer. Or you could replace the Negates with Perplex so that you could transmute up any of the combo pieces. If you did that, you could still keep the price about the same by replacing Terminate with something cheaper like Doom Blade. You could also simplify your mana base in that case by just going dimir.

Well, saj0219/dbpunk, we have had some Izzet-guild artifact cards in the past, such as Mizzium Transreliquat, but I do think it's more likely that we see spell-slinging support.

I was thinking more about this yesterday -- what returning mechanics do we expect to see?

I was thinking Battlecry could be a returning keyword for the Boros. But here's my biggest prediction: I think WotC will give a one-word ability to the Dimir that will become evergreen if it's well-liked. UB is still the color pair with the least overlap in terms of keyworded abilities, and this seems like the place to swing for the fences.

Awesome, thanks for the comment. I'm working on building this deck but I have a Chaos Wand that I'd love to work into the mix. What do you think would be a good card to swap it for? Mizzium Transreliquat?

Entrei on Modern Build-Around Cards

So a friend of mine has recently become disillusioned with Modern, as it is apparently impossible to do well in a tournament setting with a homebrew (ignoring my modern deck which consistently goes 3-1 at FNM).

Being a brewer myself, I have found that one of the best ways to make a new deck is by looking through a set (preferably an old one) and finding cards which have potential in any format. While these decks may be fun to play (Mizzium Transreliquat) they are rarely competitively viable, bringing me to my point.

Are there any cards anyone would suggest that while powerful/flexible enough to build a reasonably competitive deck, is an unused card in modern in general so as to help my friend rekindle his faith in modern?

If it helps, my friend plays an infect list in modern and a Neheb, the Worthy EDH deck.

Thanks!

i would start by cutting both jace, forced fruition, spiteful visions, howling mine, dictate of kruphix all other draw step/upkeep stacking or self-damaging cards

curiosity is a good card on nekusar, but without him its a dead card, so its not really worth it imo cuz nekusar doesnt play like niv mizzet or locust god, in that he is much more discard than those two, plus, if you want to be mean, Glistening Oil does the job of both curiosity and Gratuitous Violence for 2 mana

temple bell goes infinite with Mind over matter but without MoM bell is just another howling mine feed, and with mom you can easily combo off similar to dream halls by untapping lands or mana rocks then casting a wheel and untapping more with unwanted cards

Kami, niv mizzet, and jace's archivist are too slow, since they dont have haste theyre often killed before you can tap them

nekusar is best in that he can kill a whole table with a Windfall so single target or cards like Blue Sun's Zenith or Terminate arent that great in edh when you could be casting a Memory or Evacuation

also, memory jar is amazing here because you can copy it with stuff like Mizzium Transreliquat, Mirage Mirror Copy Artifact and Sculpting Steel plus metamorph and impersonator to draw 7, discard them all to dream halls or mind over matter, then activate the second "jar" to exile the 7 cards in the original hand, which you also discard to avoid exile, this combined with stuff like Bojuka Bog rakdos charm or Leyline of the Void makes your opponent benefit far less from Memory/Time Spiral type cards while you keep getting your cards back while slowly decking them

hope that helps!
