Toxrill, the Corrosive Deck Primer

Commander / EDH UB (Dimir)

Hi all! I'm building this deck for a friend and will explain all my choices in deck creation down below.

First, we have the many artifact sources of mana. These are to accelerate Toxrill out. One of the perils of having such an expensive commander is the cost, and having good ramp alleviates this some.

Then we have the sweepers, which we use to clear away troublesome creatures. And the tutors, which can be used to a) find a sweeper, b) find a combo piece, or c) find whatever card you need. Tutor for Bubbling Muck if you want to cast your commander quick. It makes your swamps tap for double. Or tutor for Torment of Hailfire to make your opponent's lives miserable with a single card if you have a lot of mana.

Then there are counterspells. These are to lock down the board after you're winning and to deal with troublesome permanents. Don't overuse. Also, because your commander is so expensive, the free counterspells are key to making Toxrill stick.

Thassa's Oracle + Tainted Pact = Win the game. You mill your deck using Tainted Pact, then cast Thassa's Oracle. Also, if you have Revel in Riches out and you kill ten of your opponent's creatures with Toxrill, you also win the game.

The gameplan of this deck is to give your opponent's a bunch of creatures and then kill them for value. Also, to kill your opponent's creatures for value. So for example, Blood Artist makes it so that when your opponent's creatures die, you gain a life and they lose a life. Cast Hunted Phantasm, give them 5 1/1's, cast Toxrill, kill all of their 1/1's, and you drain them for 5, generate 5 slugs with Toxrill, and get an unblockable 4/6 for just three mana (Hunted Phantasm).

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth combos with Cabal Coffers, Cabal Stronghold, and Bubbling Muck to generate a bunch of mana. If you don't have Urborg, fetching it with Expedition Map or another tutor is a good idea. If you have Urborg, fetching one of those three cards (Cabal Coffers is the best for consistent mana over many turns) is a great tutor target to fix all of your mana problems forever, or to generate absurd mana for a Torment of Hailfire.

Note that the slime counters of Sludge Monster interact with Toxrill. So once Toxrill gives every creature a slime counter, all of those creatures are base 2/2's from Sludge Monster, and thus die at the end of your next opponent's turn given no interference. Essentially, it's a build-your-own one-sided board wipe.

If you draw an infect creature, give everyone an infect counter and tutor for Inexorable Tide. You'll kill everyone via proliferation pretty quickly. Also, if you have a lot of mana via Urborg/Mana land, Viral Drake is almost its own win-con, because it gives infect counters and has a repeatable proliferation effect.

If you want cards, tutor for Windfall, Time Spiral, or Consecrated Sphinx. Consecrated Sphinx gives the most one-sided card draw, but it also is vulnerable to removal. If you have the mana, Time Spiral is nice because it costs effectively 0 - it untaps your lands, while Windfall, at three mana, is the cheapest. Windfall and Time Spiral are especially important cards to tutor for because you will run out of cards quickly ramping so fast into Toxrill, though Toxrill himself does help to mitigate this loss of cards.

That's the end of the primer. Enjoy!

Edit: -1 Tainted Pact, -1 Thassa's Oracle, -1 Viral Drake, +1 Ichor Rats, +1 Fact or Fiction, +1 Dig Through Time. In terms of gameplay, there's no longer a two-card combo, which is a little bit more fun, and the Inexorable Tide gameplan and Torment of Hailfire gameplan becomes more important. Ichor Rat/Inexorable Tide is more powerful, because Ichor Rat gives everyone a poison counter on ETB.
