Introduction

I HATE spiders...

They are creepy and have too many legs. However, despite my hate of spiders, when I saw Thantis, the Warweaver I knew I had to make a deck with her. The deck that I ended up with I think matches up with Thantis herself and with the idea of spiders in general. The main win condition is poison counters and the other half of the creatures are walls. All it takes is one bite (poison counter) and the venom (proliferate) will do its work to slowly kill you. I don't physically have this deck so I don't know how it will actually run so let me know what you think.

Playing the Deck

As stated in the introduction the primary wincon for this deck is to give my opponents poison counters through creatures with infect and proliferation. For the initial poison counter we have 10 different sources of infect including Grafted Exoskeleton to equip to Thantis, the Warweaver to make her even more spiderlike. In the deck there are only 5 cards that proliferate with the important ones being Karn's Bastion, Contagion Clasp, and Evolution Sage because they can all do so potentially every turn they are on the battlefield with Karn's Bastion being the most critical as most decks do not run land destruction.

I don't believe that most of the wins that come with this deck will come from grinding down my opponents with proliferate, but it is a very helpful tool for the deck in general. A few of the cards that really help me get my opponents to 10 poison counters are Chandra's Ignition and Mage Slayer which are both cards that can get my opponents several poison counters without dealing combat damage to them.

This deck has two modes depending on the situation and the cards we have access to:

First - Give each of my opponents at least one poison counter either by getting in early game attacks with creatures like Glistener Elf or with Ichor Rats, then build a fort of blockers and then use Karn's Bastion and Contagion Clasp to get my opponents to 10 poison counters.

or

Second - Use my combat advantages to out combat my opponents and they get overwhelmed with infect creatures. There are several cards that do a very good job with giving my creatures the advantage in combat including Akroma's Memorial, Beastmaster Ascension, Dolmen Gate, and Quest for Renewal. Akroma's Memorial can backfire for us in this deck since it give protection from two colors in the deck but I believe it proves its worth with the many abilities that it gives my creatures and it can also pair very well with Blasphemous Act. Quest for Renewal isn't really useful when attacking but it gives me more security when I swing with all my creatures that I know they will untap and I will have as many blockers as possible.

  1. Working With the Commander
  2. Thantis, the Warweaver is an action packed commander and I certainly don't want to complain about what she can't do but I made this deck focused on poison counters and she doesn't have infect. This matters because the only creatures in this deck are doing damage to players in the form of poison counters so while commander damage exists and Thantis can be a win condition all on her own, when she attacks normally its not really helping all that much. There are two cards to fix this situation I've put myself in, Grafted Exoskeleton to give her infect and Dragon Throne of Tarkir to make her a Overwhelming Stampede on a stick.
  3. If you can't Stand the Heat...
  4. Playing infect and a commander that makes people attack is going to get a pretty massive target on my back. That is why the other half of creatures in my deck are walls so round after round I can manage my opponents attacks against me. However, there will be times that board-wipes and removal will happen and I will be left vulnerable and that's where cards like Fog, Crawlspace, and Cunning Rhetoric come in to cover me in those dire situations.
  5. Staying in the Game
  6. Commander games can take a long time especially when each deck at the table wants to win by combat damage so it's important to have tools that can help keep you relevant throughout the duration of the game. For this deck those cards are Deathreap Ritual, Rishkar's Expertise, Wall of Mulch, and Liliana, Death Wielder. Deathreap Ritual, Rishkar's Expertise, and Wall of Mulch each assist with card draw and Liliana can possibly get all our creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield.
