This deck is finished, for now

Argy, 8 years ago

I may tweak this as new cards are announced for Ahmonkhet.

This can't beat 1-mardu-vehicles so it's not viable as a competitive deck.

It might be fun to play in a Casual environment.

I tried using Hazoret the Fervent but it takes too long to get its activated ability to work, and usually can't attack or block as soon as it hits the field.

If anyone can see a better way of turning it into a Creature faster, let me know.

Thanks for the interest you have shown in this deck thus far.

Big overhaul

Optimator, 8 years ago

I'm trying to free up the 5-drop slot. I also added more defensive creatures, even more removal, and took out two shitty lands and replaced them with cheap mana rocks.

There isn't a lot of room for creatures but I don't think Zurgo going it alone is a good idea. One huge problem is most utility creatures are higher in CMC so it's hard to play them as well as Zurgo as well as equip all the equipment. Cheaper utility creatures are usually rare, kinda crappy, or cost a fair chunk of money.

Brutal Hordechief and Ogre Battledriver are still on the chopping block. As I remove offensive creatures they seem less necessary. The Hordechief is great but his ability is quite expensive and both abilities don't synergize too well with Zurgo. I'd rather have simpler ways of getting Zurgo unblocked, such as Trailblazer's Boots or more trample effects.

Still want to add perhaps two more board wipes. Wrath of God and Blasphemous Act are probably what I want.

Finally updating to match what I play

Xarca, 8 years ago

I've made a LOT of changes since I first made the deck. Updating to reflect that. Also I can't for the life of me remember my 15th sideboard card right now.

Ahmonket

Ramtaru, 8 years ago

So it's a bunch of OP stuff headed our way, have to run the new Gids because that seems good...also want Avy and blue hulk and Ally poopin' Gids and and and. Feels too greedy, but maybe it isn't greedy enough? Quellers in the main and head fake by pulling them game two, or should that be the other way around?

Mono black vampires

alexisM8, 8 years ago

This is mono black vampires. It synergies well and has a lot of wins behind its belt between me and my friends. The main focus of the deck is to pump up your vampires with +1/+1 counters. This is achieved with metallic mimic, drana, and indulgent aristocrat. If you get mimic and drana out it's basically over for your opponent unless they have removal. Once Kalitas comes into play he has to be dealt with immediately. A 4/5 lifelinker that exiles your opponents cards and gives you 2/2 zombies is not fun to deal with turn 4. Also something fun to do is name servo with mimic. This makes an army of 2/2 to swing or to sac to aristocrat. Over all fun deck and if you can ult lili it's an auto win. Anyways hope you enjoy this.

Necropotence Cut

LabManiac_Dan, 8 years ago

- Necropotence + Muddle the Mixture Wow. Ok. Never thought I'd get to the point where I cut a card as gas as Necropotence from a UB Storm deck... but here we are. Necropotence has consistently underperformed for both me, and my primary testing partner. We frequently will Necro for 30 cards and not be able to put together a win the next turn. For various reasons, this is unacceptable. So in an effort to increase the potency of our newly added Dramatic Scepter combo, we're adding Muddle the Mixture.

Scry A Little

Wiinsomniacs, 8 years ago

So I'm going to be testing Lifecrafter's Bestiary today in place of Crystal Ball. Crystal Ball offers getting rid of 2 cards at a time from the top, and works well with Seedborn Muse to smooth out my draws. However, Beastiary offers a free scry every turn, as well as turning excess mana into cards as I cast creatures. There's also potential synergy from bouncing + recasting creatures to enable more card draw when I have the mana spare.

Amonkhet Update

CrimsonWings3689, 8 years ago

Oketra's Monument to replace Gauntlet of Power? Gauntlet of Power can benefit others as well, so there's a potential downside, including copy artifact effects, plus with 15 of 35 lands not being basic Plains, there will be plenty of times where I'm not getting the full value out of non-basic, white producing lands that Caged Sun can provide. Oketra's Monument makes 29 of 31 creatures in my deck cheaper to play and gives me the benefit of extra bodies to use. Redundancy is key, and an additional Pearl Medallion/Ballyrush Banneret effect is always welcome, especially when it has additional value included.

Currently testing Anointed Procession over Coat of Arms.

While Coat of Arms benefits Odric's board, granting pseudo-provoke/unblockable, it comes at a higher cmc and it has the disadvantage of benefiting my opponents as well. With the presence of a colorshifted, white Parallel Lives in Anointed Procession, the benefit is solely my own, and thus safer. It also serves to go even wider, so the loss of pump effects for my board could be mitigated by having that many more tokens to swing in with.

Purchased Deck in MTGO and testing it.

So far so good, first two matches have been wins. Really enjoying the order of stars and Cathedral Membrane. Seems to be game over by the time a overseer or shieldmate enters. I kept in the witchbane orbs and removed the consuls for the deck.

Heroes' Bane

Cthu1uS4uru5R3x, 8 years ago

I added the Heroes' Bane and removed a Golgari Guildgate. I had found that I was getting plenty of lands, and wanted to add the Heroes' Bane to the deck.

Amonkhet Update

CrimsonWings3689, 8 years ago

Rhonas's Monument to replace Sword of the Animist, as a way to cheapen the cost of my creatures and simultaneously get a pump effect to make Selvala tap for more mana seems like a no brainer.

Prowling Serpopard might make the cut as well if for no other reason that it makes my creatures uncounterable, is uncounterable itself and has a decent body, especially for the cost.

Amonkhet Update

CrimsonWings3689, 8 years ago

Manglehorn will replace Vithian Renegades as it's a less color restrictive casting cost with an additional upside.

Choke is replacing Monsoon as my meta has gotten more competitive as of late. It costs 1cmc less than Monsoon, and will prevent blue players from comboing off. Monsoon is great, but it merely forces blue players to tap out or go all in on their turn if they're not going to be able to counter anything.

Currently trying to find a cut for Dragon Broodmother as it's a very useful pet card, and can generate ridiculous value if unchecked. Also, Dragonlair Spider is another contender for the deck for similar reasons. Unsure of what to cut for those options. Possibly Silklash Spider... it hasn't performed as well as it does on paper, due to a lack of fliers to blow up at the time, or when it's on the board, my field is already beyond caring what my opponent's have for fliers. Oblivion Sower does work, but because it's an on cast effect, I can't abuse it and cheating it into play won't benefit me.

Testing Voltron

BarfQuackers, 8 years ago

Finally started playing at a more competitive level so I switched Sram to the command zone. With the switch I'm gunna be testing out:

+1 Sword of Light and Shadow -1 Quietus Spike, the spike was really nice when I was taking people down from 40+ but with Sram I think graveyard recurrence would help better.

+! Silverblade Paladin -1 Etched Champion, I think the double strike redundancy will be nice in place of an unblockable creature that I won't use anymore. However I will miss the indestructible blocking so maybe I might take Duelist's Heritage because of the amount of pro-white.

+1 Recruiter of the Guard -1 Plains, the deck needs Puresteel Paladin to function at its full potential so I added one tutor for him and if he's ever in the grave the added recurrence will help. I took out a land because 35 lands seems like enough but we'll see.

Edit: After playing with the voltron build here are some possible/ unlikely tests I'm trying.

-1 Silent Arbiter +1 Tenza, Godo's Maul, with the voltron change we don't have to worry about being attacked and want a more aggro strategy +3/+3 for 4 isn't bad.

-1 Ghostly Prison +1 Grafted Wargear Read above. Pillowfort strategy is out aggro is in.

-1 Avacyn, Angel of Hope +1 Bonesplitter Seems too high of a CMC to be played but it has dropped before testing out bonesplitter for higher commader damage

Total Revamp! thanks MarlFox

Zurrge, 8 years ago

I played 8 games over this last weekend and was able to get a better feel for what the deck was missing. That being said, my "few cards to add to the deck" pile grew to well over 100 cards as it sits now. Going to be filtering through and posting up an updated deck list later this evening, hopefully. Thank you very much for your response MarlFox. Really got the wheels turning..

Removing Counterspells

MegaMatt13, 8 years ago

I've decided to remove all the counterspells in the deck. All of my other blue deck have them and I wanted the challenge of having at least one blue deck without them. This is the least control-oriented deck of my blue decks so it made sense here.

I've thrown in Genesis Wave and Part the Waterveil as other game finishers. Path to Exile has been added to ensure I still have a decent amount of removal.

I've also updated the deck description in a way that helps explain how the deck typically plays

another rework

xdaft, 8 years ago

Dropped completely the Planar Bridge plan and went for more aggressive planeswalker approach and mainboarded more counterspells.

Messing with non-land mana sources

Beebles, 8 years ago

I'm messing around again with this list. The deck was light on additional mana sources and I get mana screwed with this list relatively often due to that. However, I've not been sure on what to use to solve this. Cards like Wild Growth are nice, but too risky imo. And cards like Cultivate are not really what I want with this list + have negative synergy with Land Tax. I would also want some of those cards to fetch non-basics to access the many land options this deck has to offer. So now I went for other cards with a similar mechanic as Land Tax, including Weathered Wayfarer. Not sure yet on the selection, as there are other contenders I'd like to include, like Gift of Estates and Knight of the Reliquary. I'll ponder on it some more, but feel free to give me your ideas about this.

Cheers,

Beebles
