Urza, Father of Artifacts, Breaker of Games

Commander / EDH Mono-Blue

The_Raging_Bagel

A slower paced Urza deck, with a few less win cons than the more powerful competitive ones. The general strategy is to draw or tutor to infinite mana, and either have Urza or cast him, and go off.

Combos:

Stax:

  • Narset, Parter of Veils + Windfall /Echo of Eons=instant friend loss.

  • Winter Orb/Static Orb + Urza =Asymmetrical Stax. Just remember to tap down the artifact at the end step before your turn. or if you have the Howling Mine out just tap it at the end of your turn. Be prepared to receive all the table hate for the stax effects, but also remember that this can hit your combo-y opponents particularly hard whilst you dig for an infinite combo, or more brutal stax.

It is important to remember that since this deck lacks a cavern of souls, you should always be ready to protect Urza when you cast him, as he is a huge target, and a key part of your deck. in general the best way to do this is to get inifnite mana first via one of the combos then cast Urza. In the early game you want to draw to your win cons, and counter cards that are big threats.

If your play group:

  • is more aggressive and creature heavy, consider taking out some of the low value artifacts that just sit like the equipments, and putting in more board interaction like Reality Shift or Blink of an Eye. Even an Evacuation if you feel the need for two board wipes.

  • is more control heavy and there's a lot of blue, consider adding more cheap counters like Pact of Negation or the Forces or even Mana Drain if you can afford them. If not look for cheap counters like Dissipate or Sinister Sabotage or Spell Pierce. Protection like Trinishpere or Defense Matrix can really help you turn those counter heavy decks into useless decks.

  • is more commander-centric or has key cards in each deck, consider adding things like Pithing Needle or Phyrexian Revoker to shut down those annoying cards and delay the game a bit.

This is just my take on what I consider a fun and potent new commander, hopefully if anyone sees this, they find it fun or enjoyable as well. Just remember to have fun!

Feel free to offer any tips, or suggestions, as I do not usually run in higher power edh circles, let alone higher power on a "budget" (not 1k for the deck), and do greatly appreciate any insight y'all may have.
