Welcome to Xyris, the Force Feeder

Look at this cute snake, do you think he would ever hurt you?

He wouldn't, but I will.

Make your opponents regret their card advantage by flooding your board with snakes. Wheels are cool and all but they get boring, and make you a target, so this deck takes a different approach.

Xyris, the Writhing Storm is a very unique commander in how he indirectly punishes opponent card draw. If you were to cast a wheel effect with him on the field, your sure to draw the ire of the table, so instead, this deck just shovels cards down their throat. By force feeding your opponents, and avoiding playing threatening cards till your ready to win, you can seemingly take control of the game out of no-where.

This deck excels at keeping everyone hands full of gas so the game doesn't stall out, while still providing the control necessary to put out any fires that happen. Its able to go wide to keep yourself protected, and still have enough snakes to swing with.

Like most decks that involve tokens, and revolve around the commander, if you cant get a ForceFeeder out or cant keep your commander on the field, the game will be very difficult for you.

Your opening hand should ideally have some form of ramp, 3 lands, and some combination of force-feed and control. Xyris both produces a swarm for you to block, swing, and eventually win with, but is a political weapon in itself. Most opponents will gladly take 3 damage to draw 3 cards, which allows you to make deals to help you get further yourself, which is why you want him out as fast as possible.

Don't be afraid to play your force feed cards before he is on the field though, even if you don't get snakes, you get more cards for more options.

You create the majority of your bodies on opponents turns, so don't be afraid to swing out on your turn, you'll make plenty of snakes before your next turn.

Hold onto your control to protect your board state and most importantly stop combo players, we run as much control as we do because of how much gas we can end up giving our opponents.

How fast Xyris wins really depends how much card advantage your opponents have. The more cards they draw, the faster this deck approaches the end game. Don't play any WinCon cards till your ready, with counterspell mana open, most of our wincons are very scary when played, and if we dont kill people when they are played, it can very quickly become a 3v1.

  • Cultural Exchange might not win you the game, but handing out a bunch of snakes for someone else's board state is always fun, especially since it targets players, not creatures. Plus the art is to good.
  • Arcane Denial is unreasonably good in this deck with Xyris on the field.
  • Teferi's Puzzle Box is the only wheel like effect in the deck, and has the added benefit of ruining top-of-deck tutors
  • Heartwood Storyteller is one of the few cards with 'may' in the deck, but most players will
  • Nostalgic Dreams you have enough cards in hand usually to grab several good graveyard cards
Notable upgrades not in the deck if only for cost/ potential changes are as follows;

  • 7/21/20 Humble Defector->Minds Aglow suggested by user:DeinoStinkus. Humble Defector was more often a chump blocker than a political card. Minds Aglow is just a better Prosperity
  • 8/28/20 Well of Ideas->Standstill Well cant be played safely till turn 6 or 7 most games while keeping options open, and has to stay on field for 2 turn cycles to be worth it, and standstill is versatile if you need cards or creatures, because you can pop it if you want, or just end your turn.
  • 8/28/20 added Oran-Rief, the Vastwood and cut a basic forest, It would of been in the deck sooner if I had known about it. This is why you should look at other decks for inspiration.
  • 8/29/20 I was cutting Purphoros, God of the Forge for Fires of Yavimaya when I realized I had already replaced it in my deck tester with Haze of Rage months ago.
  • 8/29/20 Lore Broker->Vision Skeins the creature was just to slow, and not useful on cast. Vision Skeins gives the same benefits at instant speed that Lore Broker has in 3 turns
  • 8/31/20 Coiling Oracle->Fires of Yavimaya found a spot for the card, coiling oracle is not consistent ramp, and we don't need card draw.
