Back before the release of Anje Falkenrath in commander, I knew K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth would be my B mono color commander. The deck revolves around his ability to abuse life for mana. It's been updated throughout the years and good enough to not be thrown in the trash after losing. (but now highly considering it after PM, LOL) ;)

This Krri'k deck consists of strong-goodstuff, mana-cheating, fun & unfun but surprising interactions, life gain/drain, artifact love, Landlord God, oddly smooth recursion & draw, and tutors to go for infinite BS combos to end the game early. Hey who can blame me, it's the commander, it's abusive.

The way I think about this deck's game-play is in stages; primarily to get to 4 colorless mana to cast K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth, then to assemble the combo-pieces, and finally to finish them Mortal Kombat Style.

The deck wins in a few ways:

  1. It's beater spells like, Temporal Extortion, Peer into the Abyss, Torment of Hailfire, and Profane Transfusion to seal away someone's fate.
  2. It's mean creatures like, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Vilis, Broker of Blood, Guardian Beast, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Syr Konrad, the Grim
  3. It's combo finishers; the specific line is: Doomsday into whatever two-card-infinite combo you please in B. There's a bunch of tutors to help smooth things out. Combo's Below

Some keynotes about the deck:

  1. It's 8 instants (more coming) will help react to crap being tossed your way. Imp's Mischief, Sudden Spoiling, Oblivion's Hunger, & Withering Boon are some of my favs. Plus, Emergence Zone makes all the permanents go burr for that needed reaction.
  2. Life-gain pieces such as Basilica Screecher, Prism Ring, Demon's Horn, Aetherflux Reservoir, Polluted Bonds, & Diamond Mare, Bloodchief Ascension helps balance your life total throughout the game.
  3. Punishing cards like; Font of Agonies, Phyrexian Obliterator, No Mercy, Dread, Temporal Extortion, Vilis, Broker of Blood, etc, can get a lot of heat off of the commander and dish it out similarly.
  4. Landlord deck with Cabal Coffers, Homeward Path, Lake of the Dead, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Shizo, Death's Storehouse, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, & Wasteland, has Expedition Map for finding the right land, and Crucible of Worlds/Petrified Field for good land recursion.
  5. It's all about mana cards & mana efficiency like; Crypt Ghast, Jet Medallion, Jeweled Lotus, Nirkana Revenant, Bubbling Muck, Dark Ritual
  6. Tutor for a tutor... like; Diabolic Tutor, Dark Petition, Demonic Tutor, Grim Tutor, Mastermind's Acquisition, Imperial Seal, Rune-Scarred Demon, Scheming Symmetry, & Vampiric Tutor.
  7. Basic but also busted card-draw like; Necropotence, Sensei's Divining Top, Stinging Study, Vilis, Broker of Blood, & Peer into the Abyss.
  8. Basic creature reanimation with solid cards like; Animate Dead, Necromancy, Reanimate and Beacon of Unrest for artifacts.
  9. Liliana of the Dark Realms is black ramp and I love her. 2 mana and 4 life, sign me up. Also that Emblem does WHAT.
  10. Doesn't feel like a real magic deck without at least one board-wipe. My choice was Toxic Deluge/Torment of Hailfire.

I'd call this a Doomsday deck but honestly with how wide the deck can go, it's not super dependent on landing it.

Quickening Combos - Aetherflux Reservoir + Bolas's Citadel - Bolas's Citadel + Sensei's Divining Top

Alternate Almost-Win Combos - Mindcrank + Syr Konrad, the Grim - Maralen of the Mornsong + Opposition Agent

Infinite Combos - Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond + any life gain/drain

An end note; the side board actually is cards I'd like to slot out.

why no Chainer, Dementia Master, cabal ritual, or Black Market Connections, Razaketh, the Foulblooded, entomb, buried alive, Burning-Rune Demon, final parting?

Hey theyounghansolo, I have a lot of experience playing K’rrik competitively and I have a few suggestions to help you improve your competitiveness:

ssteves1069 is spot on, Chainer, Dementia Master is crucial to this deck’s functionality. Since his ability is an activated ability, it bypasses Rule of Law and counterspells, which are this deck’s greatest weakness. To use Chainer, you need a proper sacrifice outlet like Dimir House Guard or Razaketh, the Foulblooded. Once you have Chainer, Guard/Razaketh, and Gray Merchant of Asphodel on the board, you’ve assembled an infinite combo and drain each opponent to death. You can also accomplish this with Buried Alive and Necrotic Ooze.

Final Parting targeting Reanimate in hand and Vilis, Broker of Blood in the grave usually wins you the game. Scheming Symmetry should never be run in a competitive setting since you are likely providing an opponent with a combo piece or counterspell.

Beacon of Unrest is too slow, I’d replace it with Shallow Grave. Recurring your artifacts is not critical to your strategy.

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse has the same functionality as Aetherflux Reservoir, but is a creature and can be reanimated. She pairs perfectly with Vilis. Plus Shelly and Peer into the Abyss either gains you lots of life or usually eliminates another player.

To be continued…

You also really could use more creature removal. Baleful Mastery, Deadly Rollick, Dismember, Snuff Out, The Meathook Massacre, etc are critical, since your life total is so important, you need a way to eliminate creatures which pose a serious threat, or to allow K’rrik to pierce your opponent’s defenses.

Your land strategy is unfortunately too slow for competitive play, and you are running too many lands. You should cut down to 30 total lands and focus on Lake of the Dead, which can be useful during the early turns, and drop Cabal Coffers and Cabal Stronghold, which will take way too long to become relevant. If you can’t combo out by turn 4, you are probably doomed, and these lands won’t help.

Cheers!
