Ridiculous Board States

Commander (EDH) forum

Yesterday we finally got our EDH league off the ground for the first game. We learned that 7 people in a pod is a lot to keep track of, and to not let my Mayael the Anima deck get out of control.

I at one point had Mayael, a Seedborn Muse, a Knight of the Reliquary and an Admonition Angel on the board at the same time. Add Avacyn, Angel of Hope wearing a Lightning Greaves, Sigarda, Host of Herons and Novablast Wurm and they were feeling pretty dejected.

Unfortunately, if you don't attack the blue player when you can, you get hit with Wash Out calling ...Damn blue players...

What kind of Board States have you created that turned the game into an impromptu game of Archenemy?

Brother had Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Phyrexian Processor and Trostani, Selesnya's Voice out. Sacrificed 87 life (yes, it got that far), made 3 87/87s, gained all the life back and still had about 50 points of damage on the field on top of the Phyrexian tokens.

I don't play commander, but I do play a lot casual free for all. People shift their focus to me when I have Attrition + Gravecrawler on the battlefield. They know it's a matter of time before I get a gravepact & start killing everything. Anytime I drop an Urza land they know to kill me before the eldrazi start popping out.

I was piloting a Norin the Wary deck, and had Confusion in the Ranks on the field.

One of my opponents casts Saproling Cluster.

Nobody kept the same creatures for very long.

Some of these really make me laugh.

nighthawk101 I'd hope to have a Greater Good out at that point...oh sac everything and discard a tonne of creatures just to bring them back...

Norin drives me crazy, I love the chaos but I don't at the same time. The card that killed me was the first thing I exiled because he was running around smacking people with a Nightveil Specter that had Whispering Madness ciphered on it. I've been on the receiving end of that Confusion in the Ranks business with Norin.

I'm assuming you chose to not deck yourself with your Fathom Mage JWiley129? lol

Good old Insurrection. That's a feel good moment.

I watched a guy bounce all his own attacking creatures once for fun, just to mess up the board state. Our league is achievement based so it makes for some funky plays that aren't necessarily about winning...lol.

@ addaff those mass death things are crazy hey?

A T2 Luminarch Ascension made my friend who played my Fort Kickass (Mono-W Pillowfort) deck a target very quickly last time we played. He soon added a Ghostly Prison and Suspension Field, then played Linvala, Keeper of Silence before getting into the Sphere of Safety. By that time everyone tried to kill him (except me, who got killed before for having a 10/10 Pentavus in my reworked Daretti, Scrap Savant deck). In the end they succeeded, but it took them forever (especially since I was the only one killed beforehand).

I actually wiped a 5 man EDH game recently using the new Nahari deck when I got a Deploy to the Front for 13 while I had Cathars' Crusade on the field. It was kind of hilarious.

MindAblaze! - Yeah, at some point, an 80/80 Fathom Mage is large enough where I don't need to draw anymore cards. Lol

November 20, 2014 12:32 p.m.

I Genesis Waved my entire deck and decked myself on T7 once. This is a good way to make friends.

Hah. I was playing two headed giant with my elf deck, and I cast Genesis Wave twice, gained 500+ life thanks to Nissa Revane and bled them into the negative 200 range, but thanks to a Platinum Angel which got copied three times and Daxos of Meletis being essentially unblockable due to all my pumps I got milled out...one card at a time...sometimes there's just no winning. lol.

What are your guys' experiences with varied pod sizes? My gut is four is a decent size, but we thought 6 would be acceptable, then a seventh guy showed up on turn 3 so we let him catch up...again, I think it was a little nuts with that many people. It made deciding what to get rid of with my Angel quite hard.

I was playing in that game, nighthawk101, with the Freyalise deck. That game was indeed nuts.
With just a few additions to the Freyalise pre con deck I've killed 2/3 opponents simultaneously with Overwhelming Stampede and Timberwatch Elf

3-5 seems like ideal pod size to me.

November 20, 2014 1:21 p.m.

With my Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge deck I stole someone's Rite of Replication and copied their own Solemn Simulacrum 5 times on turn 5. Then next turn I wiped the board with Decree of Pain (also cast using Jeleva). Winning from that point was trivial lol.

As far as pod sizes, I've only ever done 3-4 people. More than 5 seems to lend itself to people building decks where 'whoever combos off first wins!' I do think 4 is the perfect number.

Caes says... #17

Playing Necrotic Ooze in a 4 player game where everyone has been milled to the point of having less than 20 cards in their libraries tends to make you a target.

I feel like 4 is the perfect size, but 3 and 5 usually work out fine.

MindAblaze says... #18

We added a caveat to our point system that discourages infinite combos. You can run them but instead of getting ten points for a win, you get two. Unless its a five card combo that doesn't win, then you get extra points...

Usually I become the prime target when I put a Grafted Exoskeleton on Kaervek the Merciless, or Heartless Hidetsugu. As far as stupid board states, two Consecrated Sphinxes in play can get silly fast.

November 21, 2014 6:23 p.m.

Turn 2 primal surge->Eternal witness->primal surge. Of course, it was GG on the spot.

November 21, 2014 6:31 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #26

How did you turn two primal surge?

November 21, 2014 7:32 p.m.

Play Forest->Gaea's Touch->Forest->Crack touch->Azusa, Lost but Seeking->Forest Forest->Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary. Turn 2, play forest then Primal Surge. Note, this was a hand I should NOT have kept, but did because there was a possibility of ripping primal surge and winning on the spot. (The only other nonpermanent in the deck is Genesis Wave.)

November 21, 2014 8:11 p.m.

lemmingllama says... #28

@NotSoLuckyLydia How did you play Gaea's Touch with only one Forest out? It costs . Also Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary is banned in EDH, so this technically isn't a legal play either way.

This is like every EDH game in my group. I once had my friend drop a Craterhoof Behemoth in his Edric deck, giving his guys +11/+11. He swung at me for 70. I was able to survive thanks to my lone Mirror Entity equipped with a Stoneforged Blade and a Loxodon Warhammer. He lived my return swing because of Prophet of Kruphix (he blocked with his entire field, lol), but he couldn't Genesis Wave into anything to save him the following turn.

November 22, 2014 3:07 a.m.

Kravian says... #31

I made six Zhur-Taa Ancient (kicked Rite of Replication) while I had Prophet of Kruphix on the board. The next step was, of course, to flash in Riku on my wife's turn, make two Charmbreaker Devils, and then proceed to make 12 Vigor (original, Riku copy, kicked Rite--returned via devils as it was one of two sorceries in my graveyard--with Riku copy). She scooped before I found Blasphemous Act or Craterhoof Behemoth.

November 22, 2014 6:43 p.m.

My mistake! There are two possibilities for turn 2 wave in the deck, they require either Fastbond or Elvish Spirit Guide. That one was Elvish Spirit Guide.

popped off Erayo, Soratami Ascendant + Rule of Law out. Also had Iona, Shield of Emeria out with Sakashima the Impostor locking out blue and red + Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite and Dovescape on my field. Happens frequently with my Jenara deck. I also had Natural Affinity in my hand and Boseiju, Who Shelters All down for added mockery. Natural Affinity + Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite = rude.

@lemmingllama haha that is terrible! I hate Thieves' Auction !!!! My friend has a Norin the Wary deck which we all named "Norin the weary" because after 3 hour games and he doesn't even win, he wins by trolling!!!, Thieves' Auction, Warp World and Confusion in the Ranks.....ugh

November 23, 2014 6:03 a.m.

lemmingllama says... #34

@N_ I know, Thieves' Auction is such a weird card. And trolling is a valid way to win, I have a Zedruu deck that did the previously mentioned shenanigans, its only win conditions is either getting everyone else to concede or milling them to death very slowly.

In my Rafiq Bant deck, I had a Rafiq of the Many carrying a Lightning Greaves, Batterskull, and Umezawa's Jitte. Oh yeah, and I had an Elesh Norn and Avacyn, Angel of Hope in play. That was something like a million damage per turn. If I had equipped all that to Avacyn, forget it...

I wouldn't call this a "crazy" board state, but Lightmine Field + Sphere of Safety .

Another would be Cathars' Crusade + Fathom Mage + Selesnya Guildmage

Foxhound438 says... #37

Lightmine Field seems a bit more dangerous with forcing attacks, i.e. Bident of Thassa
