Background: The Philosophy of Why I (And, Perhaps You) Would Want to Build Marath

Marath is a very versatile commander due to the many abilities it boasts. It has +1/+1 counter synergies through cards like Hardened Scales, Rishkar, Peema Renegade, and Primal Vigor. Marath lends itself very well to a token strategy, being able to make a ton of them very quickly, and as such synergizes well with Parallel Lives, Anointed Procession, and Primal Vigor. Theres even a way of dealing with smaller threats with Maraths damage ability; an ability that becomes even more potent by giving Marath deathtouch via Nightshade Peddler, Gorgon's Head, Gorgon Flail, and even Bow of Nylea. AND not only does the damage ability deal with my opponent's creatures, but thanks to Ixalan, I get to include a slew of great Enrage creatures who I can use the ability on; creatures, like Ripjaw Raptor, Ranging Raptors, Bellowing Aegisaur, and even Raptor Hatchling.

The first deck I ever built for playing Commander was Ghave and I really enjoyed a lot of what that deck did, but it always felt so clunky. I feel like Marath is like Ghave but much more interesting to build because of the way it feels like a swiss army knife. Its fun to figure out when to make tokens, and which creatures I should kill (and since you can do all this at instant speed, figuring out when is interesting too!).

The Kind of Magic I Want to Play: The Philosophy on How I Personally Play Marath

My commander group is the Magic club at my college, therefore there's a few spikes (although all but one arent especially cutthroat), theres also a few much newer players using precons. This deck is built for my own fun. I like drawing cards. I put more card advantage in it than average because I cant stand having no cards in hand; it makes the whole experience very unfun. I also like to do something on every turn of the game; I dont personally think Commander games have to involve not casting anything until turn 3-4. Thats why I like that Marath is almost like a turn 3, turn 5, turn 7, etc. play all in one. Our games usually go quite long so I can afford to do big, fun, splashy effects. Thats why I have a lot of stuff like Zendikar Resurgent. I can afford to, and theres little to no Artifact and Enchantment destruction in the meta.

Keep some of this in mind when making suggestions. Other than that, youre free to suggest cards and ask about some of my card choices; Im sure you have questions, so feel free to ask in the comments!
