Maybeboard

Updated for 2021! This is one of the oldest Gonti decks out there, existing at least in prototype form since the day the card was spoiled. Now, it's my oldest and dearest deck. There aren't many ways to build Gonti, so I hope anyone interested takes this deck's longevity as a very positive sign, and I believe this page will be a helpful guide. This new build isn't as tuned as the old one--the curve is worse, and of course I don't have many opportunities to play Commander in person nowadays. But what playtesting I've done suggests that it's still a blast.

The deck itself is basically a mono-black blink deck, designed to cast or flicker ETB creatures as often as possible for value. Because you'll be likely building your wincons out of your opponents' cards, most flashy spells are excluded in favor of mana ramp/doubling and other fundamental things necessary for the deck to function; that said, there is a network of combo wins in the deck. Many of them involve Su-Chi, but I bought that card when it wasn't expensive, so you might be interested in some of the many other options black has for comboing off.

Having combos in your back pocket is important, but only as a backup plan. Unless your meta is particularly strong, the deck primarily functions through repeated activations of Gonti's ability, allowing you to build up a "second hand" of your opponent's cards. This allows for tremendous reactive plays and political flexibility. Be warned, some players get irrationally angry about their deck being targeted, so I'd recommend spreading yourself evenly, perhaps even going clockwise around the table, unless you can clearly justify your actions. For instance, by targeting a problematic player, or by targeting a deck that runs a lot of removal when there is a massive threat on board.
