The deck overall performs very well. I felt like it's only shortcoming was not enough defense. I focused very heavily on aggressively casting tons of weenies to trigger Ezuri. My deck had only 2 counterspells, Fuel for the Cause and Mystic Snake. I wasn't taking enough advantage of one of blue's main strengths: countering spells. I've added Counterspell and Dissipate to bring the total counterspell count up to 4. I'll see if this makes a difference in helping protect my army horde.

Honestly Charging Badger wouldn't be bad here... keep pumping him up with Ezuri and make a huge trampler.

I have been rather happy with Bramblewood Paragon in my simic Ezuri elves deck. I also think you could have some fun with Contagion Engine. I was running Inexorable Tide for a while but I found that Contagion Engine just did a lot more in the long run. It does stuff the same turn it comes out, whereas Tide sits and does nothing until you cast more spells. At 5 CMC, it often takes a turn around the table before it accomplishes much.

Just a side-note on wording: "pump out weenies to activate Ezuri's ability" - Ezuri's ability is actually a triggered ability, as such, you don't activate it. Correct wording in terms of game play would be "to trigger Erzui's ability". Not very relevant, thought I'd mention it though :)

JohnnyBaggins, thanks for the correction. You're right... Ezuri gets triggered not activated.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. All added to maybeboard

Scute Mob for all your...one drop beater needs.

and maybe Fungal Sprouting and Master Biomancer could do a bit of work in here

Nice suggestions, Bababad. I'll definitely consider Scute Mob and Fungal Sprouting.

The problem I have with Master Biomancer is that he can turn into a non-bo with Ezuri. He makes your creatures come in big and prevents those creatures from generating extra experience counters. He could be great if I already have a lot of experience counters. On the whole though, I like to see my experience counters continue to rise. Last night I was able to put 20 +1/+1 counters on Faerie Conclave for the win. Master Biomancer may have prevented me from getting my experience counters that high.

that's fair!

Do you feel as though you have enough draw to avoid running out of steam?

MegaMatt13 says... #10

Bababad, hmmm...most games yes...however I'm always open to more card draw. What would you suggest?

Zameck Guildmage and Sage of Fables fit you your useful bear archetype and are suitable mana dumps at instant speed.

In these colors id be remissed if I didn't recommend Sylvan Library, especially since your curve is remarkably low...paying that life to make an aggressive play might just win you the game.

Cream of the Crop is extremely cheap for what it does, fixes your next draw handily. Lets you dig through your deck for most of the game for the small cost of 1G. Even digging 3 or 4 at a time helps, though its usually better in more midrange variants, you might have a slot for it.

Arcane Denial always feels like a good add. Can even be used to counter a dead draw in your hand to net you 3 cards on the next upkeep or just saves you from death for 1U. Looks weird, I know, but you never feel bad about that free card.

and sylvan library is actually only 20ish bucks, ignore the cost the image gives you

I think Sylvan Library isn't really that great in a deck that includes blue. You have so many better options that don't cost you life. Rhystic Study and Consecrated Sphinx put in a lot of work. (I also second Zameck Guildmage. He works wonderfully with Ezuri.)

I play a kruphix edh deck and I love it because it is abused with other draw effects I have (Abundance combos hard with it, digging for 3 nonlands and setting yourself up to either draw all 3 naturally or through the life sacrifice is clutch.) and my play group has soft banned Sphinx for the time being, something about me and a buddy using insta decking combos with it and Laboratory Maniac. So I had to get creative :P

NoSoyYucateco says... #15

Haha. Yeah, Sphinx is baaad. I put it in every blue deck I make. :>

I like that Abundance combo. I run Sages of the Anima in mine to shut down Nekusar, the Mindrazer, or getting Blue Sun's Zenith'd for a million.

Another fantastic draw card that comes to mind is Recurring Insight. It's easy to ramp into in Simic, and boy oh boy does it draw a lot of cards.

Bababad says... #16

hurm, never considered Sages of the Anima, ill throw it in SB if anyone decides to run draw hate in my playgroup.

That Recurring Insight certainly is pretty...wish it said target player though. Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur fills that high cmc draw niche for me since I can reliably play him turn 5 or 6 (gotta love infinite hand size and eternal mana). Ill add it to my consider list though, thanks!

NoSoyYucateco says... #17

Mind you, Sages of the Anima is not as versatile as Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar. I mainly use it because it's an elf.

I'll find a spot for Zameck Guildmage. He definitely synergizes with the deck. I love Sylvan Library. I only own one copy of it and it is sitting in my Wort: the Ramp Mother of Burn deck where it is needed. Arcane Denial is one of my fave counter spells. However, I'm trying to keep countering to a minimum. I only have Mystic Snake and Fuel for the Cause because they add to Ezuri's experience counters. My Keranos: It's All Mine! is my more control-countering deck.

Looks good, even though this is a different commander this may give you ideas perhaps. Its still a work in progress but It's been doing fairly well despite me not having even all of the cards for it.

Hey! Pretty awesome build you have here. I actually have an Ezuri deck as well, though it is, as you call it, an Archenemy type. That said, there are some non-OP cards I run that you may want to consider.

  • AEther Mutation. High cmc, but totally worth it if used correctly.

  • Aluren to drop all your creatures for free
  • Asceticism to protect your creatures
  • Curse of the Swine for some good, but not OP, removal
  • Defense of the Heart for tutoring to battlefield
  • Diplomatic Immunity to protect Ezuri,or any important creatures
  • Doubling Season. If you were to invest in any one card, this is the one
  • Fable of Wolf and Owl is fun and casual
  • Give / Take for utility
  • Leyline of Anticipation for Seedborn Muse
  • Nature's Claim is great but not OP
  • Pongify is basically another Rapid Hybridization
  • Primal Command, again, for its utility and versatility
  • Reality Shift is also sort of like Rapid Hybridization. Especially great against spell-heavy decks. Shift their commander, they'll manifest a noncreature spell, which they can't flip
  • Simic Charm for utility and versatility
  • Solidarity of Heroes doubles counters!!!
  • Stubborn Denial, becuase ferocious comes so so easily
  • Swan Song is such a fun card
  • Unified Will is another great counterspell in this build
  • Worldly Tutor for whatever you want

  • AEther Vial for free creatures

  • Birthing Pod for creature ramp
  • Contagion Engine for proliferation alone
  • Simic Signet is a staple in any UG deck
  • Tormod's Crypt is good, free graveyard hate

  • Breeding Pool if you are willing to pay the ~$14

  • Flooded Grove - again, $$$
  • Llanowar Reborn: i usually give this counter to Ezuri, if able
  • Swap out Khalni Garden for Dryad Arbor
  • Simic Guildgate and Woodland Stream. I run almost exactly the same color percentages that you do, and i find that having duals, even slow duals, is very helpful.
  • Yavimaya Coast is a staple
  • Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury is so good in Commander. Tokens, Ramp, Removal, and Card Advantage
  • Kiora, Master of the Depths is one that i don't have in my build, but have been searching for a way in
  • There's a lot there, so I hope you get something out of my suggestions. If not, hey - that's cool :)

You get a +1, good sir, and I hope you give my build, How Bernie Sanders Plays Magic, a look! Happy tech-ing!

windexnose44, thanks for all the thoughtful suggestions. Love your mean looking deck! How well does it do? Does everyone team up against you? I notice you run about 10 fewer creatures than me. Do you find that sufficient? I like having an endless flow of weenies so I can quickly recover after a board wipe.

I added Sakashima and Kiora's follower in... I playtested tonight and they did great. Having a second ezuri is crazy powerful. Because there are 2 ezuris, you can put 2 sets of counters each combat phase right?

I have an Ezuri deck as well, and I learned a lot from this build. There's some stuff you may not know about on my page, but the highlights are Notorious Throng, Aluren, Wild Pair, Wild Beastmaster, and Champion of Lambholt.

@MegaMatt13 - Thanks for the compliment! I'm glad that you were able to get some use out of Sakashima the Impostor and Kiora's Follower. Great cards, indeed. Now to answer your questions:

How well does it do? : Very well! One thing about my build is that I didn't go full infect. I did this for multiple reasons. Most relevamt of all is that there just aren't that many exceptionally great infecters in //. But it also provides me with dynamic gameplay. I won't have the same game each time - but I will usually do well and, hopefully, win.

Does everyone team up against you? : Yes. That's why I added a limited amount of counterspells. They're all not super great by design; I didn't want to be that guy (Though I very well may be him, just in a different form).

Do you find [your number of creatures] sufficient? : I do. I don't usually run into too many problems. Rather than having creatures to repopulate the board after a wipe, I just counter the wipe. Also, with cards such as Yisan, the Wanderer Bard, Birthing Pod, and AEther Vial, as well as the card draw from Etched Oracle and Fathom Mage, I can usually fish them out.

Kruphix, God of Horizons could be useful here. Possibly Nylea, God of the Hunt as well.
