Maybeboard

"What, it's a deck full of 1/1's? Seems bad."

-Guy who's about to lose.

This deck is casual. It's not meant to rapidly close games, it's not meant to dominate board states. I got my fun little 1/1s and 2/1s and 2/2s and i get more of them or I make them big, then they turn sideways. Fun! I was inspired by the popular Pauper format deck; mono green stompy. Every creature in this deck is a 2/2 or smaller, with the exception of Loaming Shaman . In my opinion, Nylea, God of the Hunt does not count because it very often fails to become a creature in this deck. I use it as an enchantment.

This deck was meant to play against newer players, or those with a lot less money to spend on good decks. Players that have pre-cons or random fun jank piles thrown together from whatever they had at the time. And sometimes, you're not feeling particularly competitive and say, "You know what? Let's just have a good time." Thus, I'm purposely restraining myself from playing certain cards I already own that would fit in here fantastically, like Skullclamp , Vedalken Orrery , Craterhoof Behemoth , and a plethora of other things. I'm trying to make a good deck, but I'm also trying to give other players a fighting chance.

It is for this reason that I've included a handful of "Group hug" cards that benefit the whole table, namely Helm of Awakening , Heartbeat of Spring , Rites of Flourishing , and Temple Bell . Howling Mine can be slotted in as well, if you feel like paying the $5ish. Group hug not your style? Easy, just add in more creatures!

If you play Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite against me I will cry IRL.

FAIR WARNING

This deck will make a TON of tokens and take up a lot table space. Be prepared to count complicated token states as they will vary heavily in power, creature type, counters. Scute Swarm by itself gets out of hand FAST. Seriously, don't play this deck on a small table.

Ok but how does this deck actually -WIN-?

There are no win conditions built into the deck, on purpose, other than Colossification on Toski for commander damage. I probably will avoid this most of the time unless I really want a player gone. Even then, Toski has no built-in evasion, so I'd be relying on trample or the 1-in-the-99 Rogue's Passage . Hardly consistent. If you MUST have a win-con, you can run Fynn, the Fangbearer and/or Triumph of the Hordes . Coincidentally, Glistener Elf slots into this deck nicely. I won't judge you, but your god/deity of choice might.

Hey you called it a budget deck, but it's still over $100! C'mon man I'm flipping burgers to pay rent over here!

Hey, I get it dawg. If you really need to cut this down, The first card you can cut is Nylea, God of the Hunt but I think she pulls a lot of weight. However, she's not needed for the deck to function. Eternal Witness is about $3.50 but I have a feeling MOST commander players have at least one, if not several copies of this card lying around. Helm of Awakening is $5-6 at the time of writing. You can cut that, but I think its very good in this deck, and helps accomplishing the goal of facilitating fun games. Still, if you cut those three cards, you slash the budget by around $12-15. For some people that actually makes a difference. You can cut Scute Swarm too, but I think you shouldn't. The rest of the cards are all under $2 and I feel are justified.

Do I really need the Urza's Legacy art of Might of Oaks ?

Yes. I have received word from Sheldon on the Commander Rules Committee that if you play a Toski deck with a Might of Oaks that doesn't feature a squirrel, then you're banned from all commander games for life. Sorry, I don't make the rules. I also don't always tell the truth.

Wow, you're really handsome.

Yeah, I know.

I've been playing with this deck for a while. It fits my goals exactly. Perfectly capable of winning casual games, but not overwhelmingly so. It doesn't really gold up at higher level tables, but that was never the goal.

That said, I can still improve the deck without changing it's goals or intended meta.

ADDED CARDS: -Nettle Sentinel. 2/2 for 1. Thematic and fits. Nuff said.

-Beast Whisperer turns our little guys into cantrips! Woo! Side benefit of working with our Elvish Archdruid.

-Lure Because toski is indestructible. It's like Nemesis Mask but without that annoying equip cost!

-Haunted Cloak on Toski? Hell yes please. Its like Loxodon Warhammer but not garbo.

Also yes, I've seen the Modern Horizons 2 spoilers, HOOOLY bejesus. Yes, obviously this deck will be updated. Will this shift to a hard squirrel tribal? Maybe. Will I switch it to a Chatterfang deck? No. If I make a chatterfang deck, It will be it's own distinct build. Happy Tree friends is a deck with a purpose and a budget.

Thank you guys for the continued feedback and views. Let me know of anything that you think can be cut or added!
