Description

A bant value combo deck that revolves around utilising the evasion of cheap birds to untap and draw cards.

Introduction

My first commander deck was a very bad Jeskai bird tribal deck. Essentially I didn't want to spend money on angels. From then on birds have been a pet tribe of mine, and I went through variations iterations of bird decks eventually building some tribal deck with Derevi, Empyrial Tactician . Due to the meta I play in, I wanted to find a way to abuse birds to combo off. The evasion of these cheap creatures allows you to build value with Derevi and any affect that draws cards from combat such as Edric, Spymaster of Trask. And yes, there are bird payoffs for the combos.

The game-plan is to play as many cheap evasive flyers as possible to untap mana with Derevi. It is important to find a combat card draw effect as soon as possible to ramp up your value engine. This includes Edric, Toski, Bearer of Secrets , Reconnaissance Mission and to some extent Airborne Aid and Distant Melody . Utilising this card draw and tutors you need to assemble an infinite mana combo as quickly as possible (See Mana Combos). Cryptolith Rite and Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy will assist in getting these combos to work faster and may be necessary depending on board state.

Once you have infinite mana its time to sink it. Kinnan alone can get all your non-human creatures onto the battlefield, River Hoopoe can draw your deck. For combos that involve Village Bellringer you can utilise Crookclaw Elder and another bird to draw your deck, War Screecher to buff your team for combat damage, Yisan, the Wander Bard can search up extra bodies, and Keeper of Nine Gales can bounce your opponents entire boards. If you have the ability to draw your deck you can win on your turn without combat damage by using Approach of the Second Sun .

A small disruption package that includes counterspells, removal and Silence is also included to help you resolve your combos and interrupt any combos your opponents might try to resolve.

  • Ashaya, Soul of the Wilds + Quirion Ranger + Faeburrow Elder
  • Temur Sabertooth + Village Bellringer + Creatures that tap for 6 mana
  • Mist Raven can be used to bounce your opponents creatures, but also more importantly can be used to bounce Eternal Witness or Quirion Ranger if needed.
  • Aven Mindcensor almost shuts down our opponents from searching for mana fixing, answers and combos, whilst being an evasive body.
  • Nimble Obstructionist can be cycled to counter activate or triggered abilities, stopping Thassa's Oracle in a pinch, whilst being an evasive body on the field.
  • Aerie Mystics is yet another evasive body, but can provide protection from spot removal.
  • Verity Circle synergies with Derevi, which can tap down opponents creatures.
  • Echoing Equation can turn all your creatures into Derivi, allowing you to stack a bunch of tap/untap triggers. I also just want to mess around with card to see what it can accomplish.
  • Final Thoughts

Whilst probably not a competitive deck, a way to finally utilise birds for a more efficient game-plan is here. I will continue to hunt down any combos that involve birds, if you know any please leave a comment.
