Round 1: 1-1-1 Blue/Black Control

Round 2: 1-2 Monored Aggro

Round 3: 2-0 White/Blue Monks

Round 4: 2-1 Abzan Aggro

This was a really fun tournament, I didn't get manascrewed a lot, only a couple games. I don't know how this deck goes against monored. I accidently played a Thunderbreak Regent with the wrong mana when I had the right mana in hand. I was forced to put it back in my hand and I lost the game because of it. I also think I would have won game 3 if we didn't go to time in round 1. I'm going to another gameday tomorrow, hopefully I won't face monored XD.

Game Day April 18, 2015: (1-3)

buildingadeck, 10 years ago

Game 1 GW Manifest (2-0): GW is a really fun matchup for me because it's a pretty straightforward win as long as I get access to enough draw power. The first game was pretty simple, and I won on concession. Game 2 was the same story, but I won on his draw step of his final turn (we went to turns), which gave the win a nice finesse.

Game 2 RG Morph (1-2): I lost to the enchantment that allows you to tap a creature and deal direct damage. I could counter it and lose or fog and lose next turn.

Game 3 Mono-Red Aggro (1-2): Game 1 was a bust. Game 2 yielded me a Courser of Kruphix that stabilized very well for me, and I ultimated Garruk for the win. Game 3 was close. He had me at three, so I knew I had to be cautious, but when I played a Dakra Mystic, he Searing Blooded it for the win.

Game 4 RB Aggro (0-2): I was never able to get a consistent hand going, and it have the end of Game Day a rather crappy feel.

At the end of the day, I knew I needed to make some edits. For the mainboard, I took out two Dakra Mystic and put in the two Courser of Kruphix for the added lifegain and to help thin the lands a bit. It also blocks tokens for days. With this edit, I tools out a Swamp for a Forest. I also added 3 Hornet Nest to the side to deal with red, and I swapped Monastery Siege for a third Dissipate for my matchup against control. I am unsure about this last change, but I swapped Crux of Fate for another Perilous Vault in the side. If I feel that isn't the best choice, I might go with another Aetherspouts.

Any suggestions on how to defeat mono-red strategies would be very much appreciated.

2-0 vs Mardu mostly-warriors. I actually used Descent of the Dragons on my opponent's 2x Butcher of the Horde along with 4 of my weenies.

2-0 vs mono white devotion

1-2 vs Jeskai tokens. Close match. Need Arc Lightning in side.

2-1 vs RDW.

2-1 vs R/W tokens.

Made the cut at 4-1.

2-0 vs the same RDW deck from earlier.

2-1 vs another R/W token deck.

And finally 1-2 vs the first R/W token deck from the last round before the cut in a heartbreakingly close match.

Second place with the Aetherspouts main. However, I discovered Aetherspouts to often just a dead card, so after that I cut 1 all together, moved the other sideboard (I still want it for some matchups), put in Icefall Regents, this deck seems pretty solid now.

My take on Abzan Aggro

Tweak for Zoo Aggro Matchups

Nifarious, 10 years ago

Main: +1 Crux of Fate, +1 Silence the Believers, -1 Courser of Kruphix, -1 Sultai Charm Side: -1 Crux of Fate, +1 Courser of Kruphix 5 Ultimate Price effects is just too much, and I am seeing fewer Enchantments to hate out on. 2 MB is fine right now, and when I board things back in, 2 cmc is going to beat 3 more often than not. Courser is a bad blocker anymore. If it's not aggro or tokens, she's dead weight. Really, I should consider swapping her out for 1 BB, 1 DL Silumgar Main and have two Coursers side...or card draw...or the 4th Wayfinder... Okay, screw it. Coursers out, maxing on Wayfinder and Scorn main. 2 Coursers side. Swap 1 Coast for a basic Island as well. Makes me question the value of Green now, especially b/c I hate Wayfinders number 3 and 4...And I'm uncertain how happy I am with Courser as side board tech, but w/e, it's where I am right now.

Game Day

Took the deck out for its first paces at Game Day. Still need Llanowar Wastes, but managed to pilot it well, except for one round where mana just wasn't working

3-1, losing only to the eventual champion. I'm happy.

Game day #1 - Dragons of Tarkir

Blusvekia, 10 years ago

Holy mana screwed batman! How can this be!? So I'm dropping 3 Glaring Aegis for 2 more Collected Company and 1 Caves of Koilos. Also adding some cards to my side board.

Went 2-3 in a 5 round game... I can't believe how many awesome builds my local meta was brewing! LMAO Now I know.

Game Day (3-0 lost in top 4)

sev705, 10 years ago

Game day was small at 8 people but I faced two tier one decks and a janky one.

Round 1 - vs UB Control (ashiok variant)

  • Game 1 thougtseize a dig through time, but he can answer all my threats and I had several removal spells sit dead in my hand. He got to ultimate an ashiok and just milled me the rest of the way while chaining digs and getting answers.

  • Game 2, A single Flamewake Phoenix does most of the work and he finally has to play an ugin at 1 life that I downfall. Rabblemaster comes off the top for the win.

  • Game 3, Drop a Rabble master that just won the game. He played a perilous vault but couldn't find a 5th mana source to take out the rabble. Had a kolaghan in hand to win even if he did find the land.

Round 2 - vs GW Protection (Played lots of protection spell for his few creatures)

  • Game 1, Not expecting the deck, had several removal spells fizzle against his prot, but manage to get out a thunderbreak and storm fury for the unexpected win.

  • Game 2, Can't kill his guys and he just steamrolls me.

  • Game 3, He doesn't find prot spells and I easily defeat him.

Round 3 - Mono Red Aggro splash Atarka command (the pro tour winning decklist)

  • Game 1, Won a game I shouldn't have. Had to thoughtseize 2 in the first four turns actually saved me by 3 points of damage. Killed him in two turns after dealing with his threats.

  • Game 2, Drew into my sideboarded angers and several removal spells which locked the board down. Managed to kill with thunderbreak and Storms fury.

Semi Finals - Same GW prot deck. ( everyone I played made top 4)

  • Game 1, He drew into 3 elspeths back to back that took out three of my regents. Couldn't recover enough to stop his threats.

  • Game 2, I misplayed my turn two thoughtseize. Being skittish of elspeth, I took that instead of a suspension field that eventually landed on a regent. I removed all his threats and then flooded a little where If I had let him kill the regent with elspeth I could have rebought my regent several times. Ended up racing at the end but he managed to pump a wingmate roc token and some soldier tokens for the exact amount to kill me or I would have won next turn.

Dragons of Tarkir Game Day (3-2, 9th place)

alexthegreat38, 10 years ago

Click the small triangle above for an in-depth description of my performance with this deck at Dragons of Tarkir Game Day on April 18, 2015. Match 1 vs. Atarka Sligh (Loss 1-2) Match 2 vs. GW Aggro (Win 2-0) Match 3 vs. Mono-Red Aggro (Loss 0-2) Match 4 vs. Mono-Black Devotion/Zombies (Win 2-1) Match 5 vs. Mardu Midrange (Win 2-0) FINAL: 3-2 in matches, 7-5 in games.

Current List: 4 Wooded Foothills, 4 Temple of Abandon, 2 Mana Confluence, 1 Haven of the Spirit Dragon, 1 Rugged Highlands, 6 Forest, 5 Mountain; 4 Elvish Mystic, 4 Rattleclaw Mystic, 3 Heir of the Wilds, 4 Goblin Rabblemaster, 4 Boon Satyr, 4 Thunderbreak Regent, 3 Surrak, the Hunt Caller, 4 Stormbreath Dragon; 2 Draconic Roar, 1 Roast, 4 Crater's Claws. Sideboard: 2 Arc Lightning, 2 Destructive Revelry, 3 Hornet Nest, 1 Plummet, 1 Roast, 3 Wild Slash, 3 Xenagos, the Reveler. Match 1 vs. Atarka Sligh (Loss 1-2) I got rekt pretty hard in game 1 when I kept a 6-card hand that involved 5 lands, one of which was Temple of Abandon, and a Rattleclaw Mystic. The first few topdecks went pretty well, but I eventually ran out of blockers pretty quickly and just died. I love how red decks _always_ draw Stoke the Flames when they play against me. In game 2, I drew three Thunderbreak Regents. Not all of them managed to be on the field at once, but he could only find 2 copies of Stoke the Flames and he ended up conceding. I had just stabilized in game 3 when he topdecked _another_ Stoke the Flames to kill me. Match 2 vs. Aggro (Win 2-0) This guy said he had just recently gotten back into playing Magic, and it showed. The deck was 66 cards and included Obscuring Aether, Glaring Aegis, Hidden Dragonslayer, and a bunch of other stuff I don't remember. He didn't have the removal to get rid of my dragons so I just ended up killing him in the air both games. Match 3 vs. Mono-Red Aggro (Loss 0-2) Two borderline keepable hands went south incredibly quickly in each game. Simply got destroyed -- losing this matchup every time is quickly getting extremely frustrating. Can I really afford devoting more than 8 sideboard spots to one matchup alone? Match 4 vs. Mono-Black Devotion/Zombies (Win 2-1) This was a really intriguing deck that seemed extremely interesting. He had Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Whip of Erebos, Risen Executioner, Black Cat, and Shambling Goblin, among other things. In game 1, he had me down to 3 life and was going to Whip back a Gray Merchant of Asphodel for the win next turn, but I hit him down to 6 with a Stormbreath Dragon and then killed him with an impeccably topdecked Crater's Claws. He was able to find _all 4_ Garys in game 2, which ended up being way more life gain than I could come back from. In game 3, I got into a super awkward spot with a Thunderbreak Regent attack but ended up managing to kill him with Crater's Claws the next turn. Match 5 vs. Mardu Midrange (Win 2-0) Turn 3 Thunderbreak Regent was just a bit too much for him to handle in each game. Plummet from the sideboard did work in game 2, but the story of both games was simply my blistering start vs. his slow start. Overall pretty happy with the deck's performance, but it needs to stop getting rekt by Red Deck Wins every time it plays it. I need to experiment with different sideboarding strategies...perhaps Feed the Clan, Circle of Flame, Barrage of Boulders, or Anger of the Gods should be in my sideboard? In any case, getting 9th really hurt, but I got to wreck a lot of people with a lot of dragons, so I had fun. FINAL: 3-2 in matches, 7-5 in games. _games on the play_: 4-2 _games on the draw_: 3-3 _games vs. a mulligan_: 1-0 (only counting games where I started with more cards in hand than the opponent) _games where I mulliganed_: 2-1 (only counting games where I started with fewer cards in hand than the opponent)

Small change

-1 Banishing Stroke +1 Panoptic Mirror

Banishing Stroke seems to always be in my hand when I don't want it, so I dropped one of them in favor of a single Panoptic Mirror. Why? Because think about having Telling Time or Thunderous Wrath under it in the late game. It would basically be the end of the game.

Update on Cards in deck

finalmethod, 10 years ago

I have noticed through playing this deck a few things need to happen we are going to take our 3x Enduring Scalelord they are taking to much time to get out. Also taking out 3x inspiring Call , 2x Titanic Growth, and 3x evolving wilds. I will be adding though. 2x Avatar of the Resolute, 3x dromoka's command, 2x servant of the scale, and 3x Windswept Heath

Changes v2.0

jnpzc, 10 years ago

Changes:

Original commander was Geist of Saint Traft. The strategy was to use Geist as an early beater and creature to wear auras, and use Bruna, Light of Alabaster later in the game to pick up auras from the graveyard.

What I found was that I didn't see Bruna as often as I would have liked.

Some cards like Sunblast Angel and Faith's Fetters were taken out as they were needed in another deck.

First Go at Modern - FNM

dirtdog, 10 years ago

Well, I was completely unprepared for the meta and lost horribly with my original build.

I've ditched the Runechanter's Pike and leaned more towards a nice, midrange build. I'm keeping the Squadron Hawk because it's hilarious and effective.

I've added Ojutai's Command as it seems helpful and a good way to build some mid-late game tempo if I have lost it.

I've also reworked my sideboard to better deal with discard and late-game bombs.

First Round of Playtesting

umbron, 10 years ago

Played around 25 matches (best of 3) with this deck including MTGO matchmaking. I didn't keep track of win/loss because I was more focused on my mana curve and turn-by-turn options, but I think I went roughly 15 wins 10 losses. Took my other deck to FNM this week as it was more polished, but I will try this deck out for FNM next week.

Here are the main issues with the deck:

-The sideboard isn't really solving the Control-v-Control matchup. I need something like a Perilous Vault in the sideboard to handle UB or UBW control matchups.

-The deck is doing quite well against Gruul Aggro and moderately well against RW aggro and Red-Deck-Wins.

-I'm having some really awkward turn 4s as predicted because I am putting too much into the 5-slot. I will remove Jace's Ingenuity and split the draw into Weave Fate and Dragonlord's Prerogative.

-This deck is really, really craving Icefall Regent over Prognostic Sphinx, because on turn 5, you need something with an immediate impact on the board. Plus the Regent plays nice with my sideboard counters and with Dragonlord's Prerogative. I may raise the budget cap to fit in Icefall Regent.

-The sideboard needs an overhaul. I haven't tested the latest sideboard with Chasm Skulker just yet, but I don't see any situations where I would really want to sub in the Skulker to do better against a particular deck. We'll see how it plays out in about a week.
