Sigarda Voltron, featuring an Enchantress shell!

Looking at Sigarda, Host of Herons (in the context of a Commander) one can't help but think of running her as a Voltron Commander. Built in evasion? Check. Protection for herself and your permanents? Check. Arguably she isn't as steam-rolly as her sister Gisela, Blade of Goldnight or as ridiculous as Avacyn, Angel of Hope, but, she is fairly costed, strong, and requires an immediate answer nonetheless.

So, we have Sigarda, we have Voltron, but how can we get her lethal? We need lots of buffs...artifacts? Not in those colors. But...there is another type of buff available in . Enchantments. Perfect! But wait, there's more! These colors have an archetype associated with Enchantments, don't they?

That's right, I'm talking about Enchantress.

For the uninitiated, the Enchantress archetype typically consists of a cheap, low powered body that lets you draw a card every time you cast an Enchantment. This concept actually has its own deck in several Eternal formats, and EDH/Commander is one of them. There is quite a bit of discussion on what the best Enchantress colors might be, but nearly all proposed combinations include both White and Green due to the numerous Enchantress themed cards in the colors. Lets take a look at the included Enchantress cards in each color, shall we?

The card that started it all. Originally released all the way back in Alpha, it was actually pretty unassuming at the time. It wasn't until her sisters Femeref Enchantress and Argothian Enchantress showed up that the concept would be solidified. It is because of this card and cards like it that the Enchantress archetype exists. Speaking of which...

This Urza's Saga card took the concept laid down by Verduran Enchantress and turned it slightly on its head. The differences, while seemingly minuscule, make it a nearly completely different card. She is one cheaper, comes with Shroud, and now the draw effect is mandatory. Each change by itself would have been a welcome improvement over the original (with maybe the exception of the mandatory draw), but together they make for one heck of a spin on the Enchantress theme.

Another variation on the theme, Yavimaya Enchantress doesn't actually draw you a card, but rather she gets buffed for every enchantment on the field. Drawing her late-game after you've got a board presence turns her from an unassuming 2/2 for into a powerhouse.

Verduran Enchantress on, you guessed it, an Enchantment! Sadly doesn't trigger itself, but it's still value as it DOES trigger your other Enchantresses.

Oh man, the plane of Theros was kind to the Enchantress archetype. Lots of creatures, especially those from Journey into Nyx were now Enchantment Creatures, being affected by and triggering things that apply to both Enchantments and Creatures. Eidolon of Blossoms answers the question "What if Vurduran Enchantress and Enchantress's Presence were on the same card? Oh, and this time, what if it triggers itself?" Well, for more than either spell costs on its own, you can find out! And for whatever reason, it's a 2/2 rather than the traditional 0 power most Enchantresses have. Power creep huh?

Literally a white Verduran Enchantress, even down to having an identical colored mana/colorless mana ratio.

Okay, technically this card isn't White, but it does produce White mana! And lots of it! If you're playing Enchantress, you're playing it because cards like this exist. This land is from the same cycle Tolarian Academy is, and it is almost as bonkers! This card in my mind is a good portion of the reason why White is considered an Enchantress color.

Alright, so we have all these Enchantments, but, oh no! Our opponents have either one by one destroyed each of them, or an errant board wipe has removed them all from the field! Whatever shall we do?! This, this is what we do. Such a great card, and a staple in Enchantress decks.

Released several sets after Verduran Enchantress, Femeref Enchantress serves as a great corollary to her predecessor. Costing , Femeref Enchantress allows you to draw a card each time one of your Enchantments is sent to the graveyard from play. The two Enchantresses together are a wonderful combination, forcing your opponents to choose whether tis nobler in the mind to withstand the slings and arrows of outrageous Enchantments, or to give you card advantage, which could lead to even deadlier Enchantments.

Additionally, there is lots of debate as to who the best Enchantress Commander might be, so let's take a look shall we?

Zur the Enchanter

This guy has got to be good, right? He has 'Enchanter' in his name! Wrong. Despite having a seemingly fitting name for the role, Zur has two major problems when it comes to the Enchantress archetype: colors and viability in other archetypes. Zur's in Esper, which doesn't include Green, so he loses out on many of the cool Enchantress effects and cards mentioned above. While he does work fabulously with enchantments, it is my personal opinion that he is much better in a Doomsday + Laboratory Maniac build. That being said however, in some less competitive metas he could absolutely pull of a Voltron build.

Uril, the Miststalker

Yes. This guy. He does almost everything Sigarda does, but better. Still hexproof, same CMC, same power/toughness, gives you access to red, AND gets a buff for each Aura attached to him. What's not to like? In a vacuum, Uril is always better as a Voltron commander. You can still build him as an Enchantress commander, especially considering his proclivity for Auras.

But now, the bad news. He loses evasion (flying in this case). Additionally, he does not have Sigarda's secondary effect of letting you ignore sacrifice effects from your opponents. This particular issue is what pulls me away from Uril. Effects like that are relatively uncommon, and it's one I love to have in the Command Zone.

Overall, Uril is a more offensive commander that I think can work wonders with the Enchantress archtype, so if you're not into Selesnya, try Naya!
