Genju of the Realm Man-Land

Commander / EDH*

Onihanta

Genju of the Realm Man-Land is a five color Elder Dragon Highlander deck with an unofficial commander. The focus of this deck is to animate lands into creatures through various methods and to generate value either by attacking with those creatures, or by exploiting them through other methods. Most of the animation cards were originally printed in Betrayers of Kamigawa with the Genju cycle. The Genjus are a cycle of land enchantments that can cause the enchanted lands to become creatures until the end of a turn. When the land the Genju enchanted is destroyed, the Genju returns to its owners hand. Lands becoming creatures has been sporadically supported throughout much of Magics history, but it became most prominent in the second Zendikar block, particularly with the Awaken mechanic. Awaken is an alternate cost that can be paid to make a land you control into a 0/0 Elemental with haste. Each Awaken card has a value, and it will place a number of +1/+1 counters on the animated land equal to that value. These are the mechanics this deck will focus on.

The general strategy of this deck is similar to many Lands decks, such as The Gitrog Monster or Titania, Protector of Argoth. The goal is to ramp early and to fix colors as needed with cards such as Crop Rotation or Knight of the Reliquary. Victory conditions can be rather varied with this decktype, as several options are available. Rude Awakening into a well-stocked board can close out games on its own. Jolrael, Empress of Beasts is much the same, and Rubblehulk can be included on that list. Dark Depths or Maze's End are also good options, as land searching is commonplace with this deck. A personal favorite is Squandered Resources + Splendid Reclamation + either Omanth, Locus of Rage, Avenger of Zendikar, Rampaging Baloths, Zendikar's Roil, or Ob Nixilis, the Fallen. Large X spells can also be valid with the sheer amount of mana this deck-type can produce. Other fun/ interesting combos include responding to a board-wipe with Jolrael, Empress of Beasts to animate an opponents lands, thus essentially casting a one-sided Armageddon for the cost of two cards. Noyan Dar, the Roil Shaper with any Awaken spell will create two Awakened lands for the cost of one,

Because when lands become creatures, they become vulnerable to removal and board wipes, protection and recursion become very important. Sacred Ground and Terra Eternal are ideal choices for the protection side while any number of cards like Life from the Loam, Splendid Reclamation, and World Shaper can be ideal for recurring lands. Likewise, lands that can protect themselves can be very useful. Darksteel Citadel and Drownyard Temple are the auto-includes here. It is also important to note that often these decks will not want many board wipes, since Animated lands are susceptible to them. Board wipes along the lines of Evacuation are ideal since they only affect non-land permanents.
