Introduction

Welcome!

You know, dragons are cool and all, but building a plethora of Miirym copies is whole different plane of cool. This is not the first copy-commander i made (hence Reyhan&Ishai | Unstoppable Meet Immovable [Primer]), but the moment Miirym was spoiled how could i not immediately get reeled in by that magnificent copy ability?

Let's dive into it, why copy Miirym over building dragons:

  • copy spells often have limited use because of the legend rule, but Miirym finds a loop-hole in this rule by it's own ability making this an excellent candidate for copy-spell shenanigans.
  • Miirym copies do not commander damage, but Miirym ability triggers do stack!
  • One Miirym turns into two. Two Miiryms will turn into five (copy the token). Five Miiryms turn into Eleven (copy the token).

  • Miirym in this build is very explosive. As mentioned above, 3 copy spells can result in at least 11 Miirym tokens.
  • Dragons on themselves are powerful.
  • Access to gives great overall coverage defensive, utility-wise and offensive.

This deck of course does not come without cons.:

  • A high mana curve. And while clones balance this curve they can often only be utilized once a dragon is out.
  • This strategy is split between dragons and clones, and while Miirym glues these 2 strategies together seamlessly, having to focus on two strategies can often lead to top-deck disasters. e.g. Panharmonicon or Adrix and Nev, Twincasters are no good finds when Miirym is disabled.
  • Miirym is known and feared on any table, you will be focused.
  • Dragons in general are on popular demand. Which makes for a rather expensive deck.

Following the command zone's guideline for power levels on edh decks I would grade this deck a 7/10 with future potential for a 8/10 as this deck becomes more optimized.

The dragon tribal archetype is already one of the strongest in the format and Miirym is not only an excellent lead for dragons, access to combines the best dragon spells with the best clone spells and great overall coverage on spells in general. Miirym is a popular commander!

The Strategy

Roaming Throne deserves a panel on it's own? Well yes, this "dragon" does allot. Roaming Thone should enter the field as nothing else but a dragon offcoure. This causes the following with Miirym on the field:

  • Miirym creates a copy of the Roaming Throne, but the Throne doubles Miirym's trigger on the get-go. This means we end up with 3 Thrones and a Miirym after the cast resolves.
  • Ward conveniently also is a triggered ability. When an opponent triggers Miirym or a Throne all other Thrones will ask for an additional . With just the 3 Thrones and 1 Miirym this means each Throne has "Ward " while Miirym has "Ward "
  • And thats not all, our conventional dragons like Utvara Hellkite, Thrakkus the Butcher and Klauth, Unrivaled Ancientfoil just as our unconventional dragons (e.g. Pirated Copy's "...combat damage, draw a card" effect) greatly appreciate Roaming Throne.
