Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm

Legendary Creature — Dragon Spirit

Flying, ward (When this becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter it unless that player pays .)

Whenever another nontoken Dragon enters the battlefield under your control, create a token that's a copy of it, except the token isn't legendary if that Dragon is legendary.

KBK7101 Nice take, i left a comment. :)

I tried to build a flavourful take on Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm. It relies mostly on the dragon-theme (even smaller ones) than on pure power. I look forward to your opinion and maybe a comment/upvote.

Cool list!

Have you considered Scaled Nurturer as 2cmc on theme ramp piece? Earthquake Dragon seems to be the new green “going too guy” in dragon tribal.

How about Rishkar's Expertise or Return of the Wildspeaker? I like the versatility of both. And Garruk's Uprising could do an awesome job in this list, too.

A tried a dragon deck by myself for the first time (Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm) and tried to stick as far on theme as i could. Maybe you take a look and share some thoughts :) would you mind, if i link it?

I've been able to play with some key additions from Baldur's gate and as we all thought the Ancient Dragon cycle are all amazing. I'd say Ancient Bronze Dragon is the weakest leading me to cut it (which more goes to show how powerful the other options are). When I first saw Ancient Gold Dragon I was not impressed but wowza. You get a hit with that and have either Dragon Tempest or Scourge of Valkas out and that's a game ender. Lastly also I did not anticipate adding Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm to my list but happened to get it in a draft. It's a bomb. You can transform Scion into Miirym, then immediately reanimate Miirym to get a token copy of it that isn't legendary. The original goes back to the graveyard, but that's where you want them for when you hit your graveyard with a mass reanimate spell. What I've found is my deck is now far less reliant on Scion in the late game. He comes out gives me a ton of value then usually my board state is so strong I don't care when my opponents eventually kill him.

I have played around with Sneak Attack it’s a very cool card and can help but I ended up removing it for Monster Manual. I’m trying to let my dragons stick around so this is more on theme with the list. It might make it back in sometime but I’m not sure when.

Im currently not running cards like Dragonborn Looter and Scaled Nurturer as I’d rather be able to play big dragons. And they have anti synergy with cards like The Prismatic Bridge  Flip, Monster Manual and most of my etb draw triggers. In a different build I would play these cards but not in this one, they are definitely good cards tho. Im also not running any mana dorks for this reason.

I have also toyed around with Lozhan, Dragons' Legacy but her ability is sadly a cast trigger and I’m trying to cheat cards in play without casting them. Instead I ended up playing Purphoros, God of the Forge as he triggers on etb’s which has great synergy with all my token makers especially Ancient Gold Dragon as rolling a nat 20 can kill the entire table. It does less damage in some cases but it’s more consistent and it helps that its a god that can be found with The World Tree

For now I’m still playing Manaform Hellkite as the tokens she creates have haste and if my commander is out they generate extra card draw. Or she creates extra etb effects to Ping people to death with my ping bois. She is probably the next one to go tho.

As for the dragon count, I’m trying to keep it at a minimum of 30 dragons which is where I’m at right now. Which might sound a bit low but there are plenty of dragons that create dragon tokens. Right now I have Ancient Gold Dragon which creates on average 11 dragons per combat or over 20 if she has double strike. Dragon Broodmother, Lathliss, Dragon Queen, Manaform Hellkite, Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm and Utvara Hellkite. And ofcourse my reanimation stuff. I’m currently testing a few more dragons that might bumb me up to 31/32 but they have to be better than cards that are already in here which can be quite hard. But Dragonlord Atarka might be coming back soon as he has great synergy with the D20 dragons

The biggest problem is the 100 card limit as I also need to play some more protection spells. Heroic Intervention and Teferi's Protection as my playgroup is playing more board wipes. Counterspells can also be the way to go but I rather not play those as a personal preference

Thank you for your great feedback! It's always appreciated. I did consider Eerie Ultimatum when it was previewed during Ikoria spoiler season. I eventually decided to leave it out of the 99 due to its tricky mana cost in a 5-color deck and, more persuasively, the fact that a suite of mass recursion spells already existed in the deck, like Living Death, Patriarch's Bidding and Rise of the Dark Realms. These spells, of course, return creatures to the battlefield, which Eerie Ultimatum does as well. However, with just 12 other non-land, non-creature permanents in the current 99 of this build, Eerie Ultimatum did not seem valuable enough to squeeze into the deck, and that is considering the potential mana ramp of recurring multiple fetch lands to the battlefield as well (no landfall triggers).

Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm's inclusion into this deck is inevitable. The moment a copy of her becomes available she will become a part of this deck and make it so much stronger. The same can be said for Ancient Copper Dragon, Ancient Silver Dragon and Ancient Gold Dragon. Moltensteel Dragon's presence in this deck is to combo with Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon or Dragon Tyrant for the purposes of one-shotting an opponent, usually a control player or blue mage at the table. Panharmonicon is an interesting card to consider. By my count, in the current 99 of this build, there are four Dragons (Bladewing the Risen, Lathliss, Dragon Queen, Scourge of Valkas, Terror of the Peaks), three enchantments (Garruk's Uprising, Dragon Tempest, Temur Ascendancy) and one artifact (Dragon's Hoard) that could benefit from the inclusion of Panharmonicon. That is a total of eight cards from the 99 (8.08%). That does not seem like a high enough percentage of cards to reconcile adding Panharmonicon to the deck. Yarok, the Desecrated would not approve.

Thank you for your comments and your recommendations! I appreciate them and am looking forward to upgrading this deck with several new cards from Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate!

What a nicely written Baldur's Gate Update MattN7498!!

When Wrathful Red Dragon got spoiled i also knew right from the start this is gonna be a staple in Dragon Tribal Decks, period. Same goes for Thrakkus the Butcher. Doubling the attackpower of every Dragon you control? Insane. Giving them trample via Garruk's Uprising for example and double strike via Atarka, World Render or a quick The Ur-Dragon trigger into Sylvia Brightspear in addition and we look at a pretty effective Overrun.

I think we still don't quite get how powerful Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm will be in this deck, it's gonna be almost hilarious. Double Terror of the Peaks and Scourge of Valkas triggers are going to make me smile, haha.

I switched Crux of Fate (i know, i know..) for Blasphemous Act as my Playgroup tends to steal my cards, so they use Crux of Fate to wipe the board with all my dragons or i can't wipe their board as they control MY dragons. With Blasphemous Act i make sure everything dies and comes back to MY graveyard, it also serves as a finisher with Blasphemous Act + Wrathful Red Dragon , shoot x times 13 Damage at non-Dragon targets, including life totals, where x is the number of Dragons you control. With Blasphemous Act you also have yet another way to get your Dragons into the Graveyard for mass reanimation spells like Patriarch's Bidding, Living Death, Haunting Voyage or Twilight's Call.

By the way I really like Twilight's Call as you can play it at instant speed which can be a game changer for example when someone tries to exile our graveyard. More often then not did the Foretell mechanic of Haunting Voyage hindered me by ONE turn to win the game and made me loose, which is why i changed it to Twilight's Call.

I wish cards like Old Gnawbone and Ancient Copper Dragon wouldn't be as expensive as they are, as they would also be a fine addition for my The Ur-Dragon Deck, for obvious reasons.

In general, you were a HUGE inspiration for my own iteration of an The Ur-Dragon Deck and i always come back to your Primer when i need some advice or thoughts on cards. So thank you for the write-up!

Some day I would love to show you my The Ur-Dragon Deck, as i would very much appreciate to hear your thoughts on some of my card picks! (I still need to post it on tappedout..)

Cheers!

CommanderBrutti on Scion Turbo Mass Reanimator

*UPDATE:

Lathliss, Dragon Queen OUT > Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm IN

The new set brought an impressive amount of new dragons. However, not all of them fit the mass reanimation plan and others are simply beyond my budget. But there is an immediate and low-cost upgrade with Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm: makes stronger tokens and it's the ideal dragon to select with Scion of the Ur Dragon just before the mass reanimation. It can literally double every dragon that returns to the battlefield and assemble even more deadly turns out of thin air!

Thanks for the insight. The thing is, with the new Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm as my commander, I can create a lot of tokens. And with rhythm of the wild, they won't get haste. On the flip-side, leaving some defenders is not bad anyways.
