UPDATE January 25 2026

After a few rounds with my playgroup, Doppelgang is really a killer. But a few tweaks are needed. So with that in mind:

ORIGINAL POST

I've been remaking a lot of the old precons starting with 2011. The goal is to play all the precons I have (which is close to 70) all updated in 2026 at our weekly games.

I've posted a few from 2011:

Looking to improve Riku for multiplayer commander playgroup that doesn't allow tutoring or infinite combos.

Would appreciate suggestions! Am looking to make this able to finish the table but still interactive along the way. Or if you like my take on this please just let me know and upvote this!.

Thinking of added some haste enablers like Bitter Reunion, Crashing Drawbridge, Temur Ascendancy - but what should I remove to make space?

Early Game: Ramp

Riku is pretty mana hungry so we need a good ramp curve to fully utilize him. Solid single and multiple mana enabling creatures like Birds of Paradise, Bloom Tender, Selvala, Heart of the Wilds and Shaman of Forgotten Ways coupled with artifact rocks Arcane Signet and mana fixing Chromatic Lantern. Burgeoning should help and we can get additional lands in hand through Kodama's Reach and Cultivate. Sword of Hearth and Home can also help once we get a creature with evasion out either through a cloned creature or even Birds if flyers are scarce.

Playing out some early cloning effects depending on what is available. Cloning creatures with relevant evasion may help utilize early Sword of Hearth and Home or Sword of Wealth and Power effects to either ramp more or copy some early sorceries with Riku. Save your counterspells mainly for Riku early on - or hopefully draw into Lightning Greaves.

Mid Game: Clone away, baby

Here we want to focus on copying all the good stuff we can. And using the acceleration of Riku's copying through Harmonic Prodigy, Roaming Throne (choosing Wizard) and Mirror Room / Fractured Realm to double his triggers. Double Major can be used to copy something as a backup if Riku is not out or to copy a legendary creature.

Kodama of the East Tree triggers when ANY permanent is put into play. So with Riku's copy ability and 6 of the cloning casting costs at 4, that allows us to cast for free any other artifacts and enchantments we have in hand, 1 of 10 applicable creatures and even Oko, the Ringleader.

Winning

  1. HYDRA OMNIVORE: With multiple copies of Hydra Omnivore from Riku or Rite of Replication or any of the trigger doublers, you'll need Garruk's Uprising or Rogue's Passage (depending on life totals) on the battlefield. Swing at the weakest opponent.

  2. CHANCELLOR OF THE FORGE: Copy with Riku, multiply triggers with doublers like Mirror Room / Fractured Realm and swing with an army of goblins for the win. Example: with just 5 creatures in play, casting Chancellor and copying him with Riku generates 4 triggers making (1st trigger, 6 goblins; 2nd trigger, 12 goblins; 3rd trigger, 25 goblins (includes entry of the 2nd Chancellor); 4th trigger, 50 goblins) = 93 goblins.

  3. DOPPELGANG: Doppelgang is probably my favorite. Even casting for X=2 with any of the trigger doublers out, and copying this sorcery with Riku, creates 6 copies of 6 permanents which is likely deadly.

  4. BIOVISIONARY: Either Rite of Replication or even a Riku copied Doppelgang for X=1 with a trigger doubler out creates the win with 3 copies of Biovisionary being generated.

  5. DEVASTATING ONSLAUGHT: Even at X=2, with a trigger doubler out and copying this with Riku generates 6 hasty creatures that are copies of hopefully a big nasty creature you've cloned. And if you don't have anything good but can swing and make contact with Sword of Hearth and Home you can flicker one of your clones to copy something new on the battlefield and then proceed with casting Devastating Onslaught.

  6. BRASH TAUNTER: Seems crazy but I have seen games won with 2-3 Brash Taunters on someone's board. With opponents buffing their creatures (my playgroup loves +1/+1 counters), pay the 6 or 9 mana to fight those creatures and take players out.

  7. SIEGE BEHEMOTH: I thought about Balefire Dragon here but my group often has enough fliers to block and 6/6 is not big enough by end game in my meta. Siege Behemoth is big and makes everything unblockable. Hexproof will increase his chances of survival if he and his copies dont have haste. Then making all our other clones unblockable should allow us to swing for the win.
