Around the time spoiler season came around for Amonkhet, I noticed the new Exert mechanic on a few select Green, Red, as well as White creatures. Then, when the pre-release happened and I had the chance to try out the mechanic for myself, I was hooked. I needed to create an EDH deck involving this new mechanic.

First, the commander. Luckily, we have the luxury of having a brand-spankin' new legendary creature that utilizes all three of Naya's colors. That creature is none other than Samut, Voice of Dissent. Samut has a plethora of awesome keywords that every red and green player loves (Double strike and Haste) as well as a keyword that we'd expect from a white creature (Vigilance). Then we have the second line of text that gives every single creature on our side of the board haste, which allows us to immediately Exert our creatures right out of the gate. And if that wasn't enough, with Samut's last ability, we can untap another target creature by tapping our commander and by paying the low, low cost of . Overall, a really great commander.

Next, the strategy. How can we abuse this mechanic to the fullest? Well, it's surprisingly simple.

The first step is to give our creatures Vigilance. This will allow us to exert our creatures and not have them remained tapped for the following turn or during your opponents turns because, you know, its what vigilance does.

The next step, grab all the cards that give you extra combat steps. This is actually really important, and actually plays into the win condition of this deck. Because of the fact that most of the cards that give us extra combat steps end up untapping all of our creatures and almost all the exert triggers stack with each combat step (ex. Aggravated Assault + Tah-Crop Elite If you have enough mana dorks on the field, you can effectively just take infinite combat steps).

However, what happens if you don't have anything that gives your creatures Vigilance? Well, there are still some cards that will give you value for each tapped creature you control, such as the new cards Throne of the God-Pharaoh and Harvest Season.
