Turbo Hulk Budget

Varolz, the Scar-Striped is a 15 feet tall, fierce troll warrior of the Golgari Swarm on Ravnica. He has a symbiotic fungus living on him that repairs his wounds, replacing his skin with tough scar tissue which means that the more battles he's in, the tougher he gets.

As a sacrifice outlet in the command zone, Varolz enables this Turbo Hulk Reanimator deck to focus exclusively on getting Protean Hulk on the battlefield.

TCGPlayer Low Budget: $50

  • If combat damage is not possible due to blockers or control, there aren't many win conditions available to aggro decks that have reach or can target multiple opponents at once.
  • The combat based win conditions that are available like Craterhoof Behemoth, Avenger of Zendikar, and Finale of Devastation can be generic as they are popular answers for any aggro deck. Having a win condition specific to a sacrifice or reanimation style is interesting and more on theme.
  • The Protean Hulk combo here is fair in that it requires 4 creatures on the battlefield, making it fragile and open to disruption. For example, exile Melira, Sylvok Outcast or Lesser Masticore and the combo is dead. Graveyard hate also completely shuts off the deck and must be answered to win.

  • You prefer taking advantage of all zones of play, especially the graveyard.
  • You enjoy combinations, particularly creature based.
  • You like to sacrifice and reanimate creatures.

  • Your meta is filled with graveyard hate.
  • You don't want to win with a combo.
  • Hollering "HULK SMASH!" as you windmill slam Protean Hulk onto the battlefield is not your style.

The Hulk Combo:

  1. Sacrifice Protean Hulk to Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, or Varolz, the Scar-Striped and use the Hulk's death trigger to put Melira, Sylvok Outcast + Lesser Masticore + Disciple of the Vault + Viscera Seer into play.

  2. Sacrifice Lesser Masticore to Viscera Seer which will trigger Masticore's persist ability, returning it to the battlefield without a -1/-1 counter, due to Melira, Sylvok Outcast's ability.

  3. Disciple of the Vault will trigger from each Lesser Masticore death dealing 1 damage to an opponent.

  4. Repeat steps 2-3 infinitely until all opponents are dealt lethal damage.
