Hazezon Tamar, Godfather

Commander / EDH Lands RGW (Naya) Tokens

Hagdorm

Hazezon Tamar is a unique legendary creature, and one of the original legendaries way back from Legends. I've always wanted to build a deck with him at the helm, and I acquired an Italian copy to do just that (that, along with the fact that Hazezon is the head of a very big family, gives the deck its name :P ).

While a 2/4 body isn't exactly thrilling in Commander, especially for the hefty sum of 7 mana, it's Hazezon's ability to make tokens based on the number of lands I control that intrigues me. It struck me at first as an odd hybrid concept, being a lands theme with a token payoff. However, Avenger of Zendikar exists and does this nicely, so there's definitely a precedent for the archetype. Phylath, World Sculptor gives me another Avenger, albeit worse, but still useful. I'm running 50% basics because of him. The biggest drawbacks for Hazezon are that his Sand Warriors enter the next upkeep, and are exiled if he leaves the battlefield...but only if the tokens already exist when he leaves. Since Hazezon sets up a delayed trigger, if he leaves before they're created, the Sand Warriors get to stick around.

The strategy for this deck is to win either by creating a token army, buffing them, and giving them haste, or killing my opponents through incidental damage when the tokens enter the battlefield, such as with Purphoros, God of the Forge . Hazezon himself is a bit of a liability once we've set up his delayed trigger, so I can remove him with a sac outlet such as Ashnod's Altar - he can even be sacrificed to Eldrazi Monument in a pinch, since I can stack the triggers how I want. Alternatively, cards like Lightning Greaves and Whispersilk Cloak protect him from spot removal so I can keep him around.

Two cards I'm really looking forward to trying out are Earthcraft and Tawnos's Coffin. Even without infinite combos, Earthcraft can as much as double my mana, and Tawnos's Coffin has so much versatility, whether it be protecting an important creature, getting rid of Hazezon, or doubling the tokens off Avenger or Phylath. The deck can certainly function without them, but I fully expect them to be all-stars.
