Maybeboard

The name for this deck like its plan is simple. Stack counters on Skullbriar, the Walking Grave , and introduce it to the opponent's face. Repeat as needed. So, now that the basics are out of the way let's dig in(pun intended).

First up the constraints.

  1. Budget. I wanted to get this deck up and running for under $60. With a bit of luck and some aggressive shopping/trading, you can likely get a version running for less.

  2. Ease of use/Consistency. While I have been playing MTG for a while, I am new to Commander. Further, knowing there is a decent chance I might play in multiplayer variants more often, I wanted to expend as little mental energy figuring out my plays so I could spend more time figuring out my opponent's plays.

  3. Story/Theme. While this is subjective, I tried to stick with cards I would imagine that Skullbriar would associate with or would come naturally to it. I tried to use as many elementals and zombies as possible.

C-C-C-COMBOS!

First up, and likely the most broken combo in this deck, The Ozolith + Skullbriar, the Walking Grave . Due to the way they interact when Skullbriar dies(it will, often) it ends up making copies of all of its counters! Bonus while Skullbriar is in time out, those counters are still active on Ozolith! for most of them this is just an "ehh ok" but the coveted hexproof and indestructible counters will protect The Ozolith until you are ready to dump them onto something(Skullbriar). Neat.

Next up is Deathtouch + Trample. I am not sure how well know this is outside my local but here is the breakdown. Trample changes the way a creature assigns damage. What we are concerned about is that you only need to assign lethal damage to blocking creatures (702.19b for those curious). Good news everyone, Deathtouch makes 1 point of damage lethal(702.2c again for those curious)! Now there are a few ways to get this running.

For Deathtouch; Grimdancer + The Ozolith or Nesting Grounds or Slippery Bogbonder , Void Beckoner , Mer-Ek Nightblade , Death Baron . For Trample; Fully Grown , Titanoth Rex , Thicket Crasher , Hornbash Mentor

Lastly, lets go over some of weak points of this deck.

Most of the time you want to pile +1 counters on Skullbriar like a dragon hoarding gold, but pay attention to ways your opponent will try to force Skullbriar into your hand or library. Blue decks are lousy with spells like Unsummon and the like. Try to save your hexproofs for this if possible. Failing that, start trying to spread the love with your other creatures. They can't unsummon them all! (note, they 100% can).

Blightbeetle See that. Cards like that are to be killed on sight. Deal with them first then get back to trying to drown Skullbriar with counters.

-1 counters. Just like the +1 counters, these follow Skullbriar. Be extremely wary of getting Skullbriar killed by -1 counters. Skullbriar will not help you much if it gets to the point that Skulbriar dies as a state-based action from too many of them.

Token creatures. There are ways to handle them but keep an eye on it. Like cats one or two is ok, 20 is a problem.

Maybeboard

Just want it says on the tin. These are cards that might go in or work as alternates to cards in the mainboard. Quite a few of them are cards I would normally sideboard but being new to Commander I am not sure how that is used normally. shrug

Parting is such sweet sorrow

Once this deck is built and in the wild, I will likely have more to add or tweak. Theorycrafting will only get me so far. If you have any suggestions please let me know! Thanks for stopping by!
