Blood Curdle

Instant

Destroy target creature. Put a menace counter on a creature you control. (It can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.)

Thanks king-saproling. It's been playing well.

Temporal Isolation as removal? Perhaps to replace Blood Curdle , which is only good if I've switched to a heroic creature.

Soul Channeling to replace Blessing of Leeches is a coin flip. I admittedly have a soft spot for Kamigawa and Rebecca Guay. I also enjoy the flash as a response to combat or removal.

Skeletal Grimace to replace Strands of Undeath is also a coin flip. I like the card advantage it offers.

Why don't you try to had cards that add keywords as counters from Ikoria like Void Beckoner, Slippery Bogbonder, Daring Fiendbonder, Duskfang Mentor, Unexpected Fangs, Blood Curdle, Sudden Spinnerets, Fully Grown, Hornbash Mentor or Titanoth Rex? Since the keywords are counters they won't be removed from game when Skullbriar dies or changes zone.

I did a graveyard-style deck like this with Brokkos, Apex of Forever which was to get cards into the graveyard, namely Brokkos, and then use his ability to mutate him onto a strong creature like Rhizome Lurcher that benefits from the graveyard. I saw this deck and it looked pretty similar, so i checked it out. I like it, i'll probably try to get it in arena, but you might want to do Ashiok, Dream Render instead of Blood Curdle and add in 1 more Thassa's Oracle so one of your win conditions is higher.

Hi there!

A few cards I'd take out for better/stronger alternatives:

Cards that can be put in instead:

  • Giant Killer It is an early tapping creature, that doubles as removal.

  • Law-Rune Enforcer The "weaker" version of Giant Killer, but his tap ability is significantly better.

  • Tithe Taker A somewhat disruptive creature, that gives you an evasive dude on when he dies.

  • Tomik, Distinguished Advokist His abilities don't matter much, but a 2/3 flier for 2 should be enough to make up for it.

  • Gideon Blackblade He's a human on your turn and he's a very strong play on curve. He can be hard to deal with for control decks, keeps you on board after boardwipes and sometimes gets to snipe their best thing with his -6.

  • Lavabrink Adventurer If you can correctly calculate what to avoid (odd or even), I imagine this guy could be quite annoying to play against.

  • Taranika, Akroan Veteran Once you have some small dudes to pump up, this guy starts to hit for a bunch.

  • Reverent Hoplite If you end up harder on white, this guy could end up putting a bunch of power in play.

  • General Kudro of Drannith This guy does it all in a deck centered around humans. Play all 4.

  • Sunhome Stalwart Will be hard to beat in combat, once you have a couple of Kudro and/or Lockdowns in play. He also beefs up the tokens on attack, which might come in handy.

There is also the possibility of splashing red for cards like Tajic, Legion's Edge, Stormfist Crusader and Judith, the Scourge Diva, but I believe that some combination of the above will definitely make your decks stronger.

Shaving off the top of the curve means you can take out some lands too (around 2-4, depending on how the new list looks).

Good luck brewing.

This is exactly the kind of deck I was thinking of last night, definitely borrowing your list to playtest on Cockatrice. Seems like Skullbriar got a massive upgrade with keyword counters.

What are your thoughts on some of the other keyword counter cards? I realize Blood Curdle is not a great rate for a kill spell, but it is an instant and gives evasion to Skully? Duskfang Mentor and Hornbash Mentor both bestow useful evasion counters and +1/+1 counters. Unbreakable Bond seems solid as a way to get back a stacked, dead Skullbriar and give him lifelink.

Also, mutate seems like an interesting option for non-human voltron. Specifically, Dirge Bat, Cavern Whisperer,
