Maybeboard

My Fabulous Unicorns will take over the world. The goal of the deck is to overrun my enemies with a stampede of unicorns (duh). This is by far my favorite deck, as it isn't combo focused, and it just feels so good to spam out as many unicorns as possible. People really tend to underestimate the power of this deck.

This deck focuses on card draw, and it uses some mana ramp in order to get out useful spells that overwhelm the board with creatures. Win conditions include Primal Surge, Approach of the Second Sun, Kindred Summons, Moonshaker Cavalry, and Craterhoof Behemoth.

Other extremely good cards/borderline win conditions in the deck include Legion Loyalty, Lurking Predators, True Conviction, Coat of Arms, Cathars' Crusade, Blessed Sanctuary, Champion of Lambholt, Mirror Entity, Garruk, Caller of Beasts and Beastmaster Ascension.

Here are the cards that make the deck work:

-The card draw/advantage engines: Beast Whisperer, Zendikar Resurgent, Soul of the Harvest, Guardian Project, Primordial Sage, The Great Henge, Vanquisher's Banner and Realmwalker

-Top deck control (yeah there isn't much): Path of Ancestry, Elven Chorus

-Mana Ramp: Smothering Tithe, Gaea's Cradle, Growing Rites of Itlimoc  , Opaline Unicorn, Weathered Wayfarer, Earthcraft, Mirari's Wake, Circle of Dreams Druid, Elven Chorus and, of course, Sol Ring.

-Other All-Stars: Aura Shards, Adaptive Automaton, Metallic Mimic, Loyal Unicorn, and oddly enough Wishmonger.

Also, it rarely ever happens, but there is a 5 card infinite combo in the deck with Emiel the Blessed, a basic land, Earthcraft, Mirari's Wake/Zendikar Resurgent, and Irregular Cohort/Valorous Steed. Basically I use the two creatures from the steed/cohort to untap a basic land twice and make 4 mana thanks to wake/resurgent. I use 3 mana to flicker the steed/cohort with my commander so that when it enters I have two more untapped creatures to repeat the process. It nets me infinite mana and infinite tapped creatures.

The very first commander I used for this deck was Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa without a partner. This was back when there were so few unicorns, pegasi, and playable changelings that I had to include a third creature type: knights. That didn't last long.

Then I had Dr. Julius Jumblemorph as the commander, but I changed it to Morophon, the Boundless, although really either one works for the deck. They are both changelings, which is the most important thing. The differences are that Morophon can include the two blue unicorns, costs seven mana, and has some sweet extra effects. The only thing Dr. Julius has going for him is that he costs 3 less mana (and costs less in regard to $). Costing less mana can still be important in this deck, because the more creatures you can get out, the better. I had however, settled on Morophon as the final choice. I've taken Dr. Julius out completely just because it is technically illegal in commander.

Then, all of a sudden after Jumpstart came out we had our first legendary unicorn (besides the two changelings mentioned above)! Not only that but Emiel the Blessed is pretty sweet. His on the spot flicker effect synergizes with my card draw engines and especially with Craterhoof Behemoth and his white counterpart, as well as several other cards in the deck. Not only that, but he cares if you play unicorns! So, of course I had to switch him with Morophon. I only wish I could play both Morophon, and the two blue unicorns, while still having Emiel be my commander, but I guess compromises must be made.

Commander Legends brought us the second legendary unicorn, and I briefly considered making Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn the commander, but I feel like making Lathiel work as the commander would require a bit more life gain support (which could be done by removing the remaining changelings). Thus instead of going all in on Lathiel, I'd rather stick with Emiel who already synergizes with the deck. That being said, there is still a strong argument for Lathiel, and I'm sure a really good unicorn deck could be created with him.

I have now switched out every Pegasus in the deck for changelings. This is now a reasonably dedicated unicorn tribal, as about 90% of the creatures are, in fact, unicorns. I have now also made a Pegasus tribal deck which you can find here: The Second Best Tribal. My Pegasus deck is no longer being updated though, as I have disassembled it. No point in having the second best tribe if you have the best tribe.

Seriously though, you should try out this deck. If this deck interests you the you can also check out my other unicorn decks (Unicorns v2.0.... or is it??? which is no longer being updated and The "Nic" Deck (w/ Unicorns!) which has actually had several unicorns removed from it.)

Updates Add

It’s been a hot second since this deck got updated, but there are some gnarly new pieces.

First, two new unicorns have been printed recently. Regal Bunnicorn and Neighborhood Guardian have replaced Impostor of the Sixth Pride and Woodland Changeling respectively.

Then there is the new addition of Moonshaker Cavalry which blew my mind. Craterhoof Behemoth is already the main win condition, and Moonshaker is almost the same thing. So, why not both? I’ve removed Augur of Autumn as the card has not lived up to expectations. It requires setup to use unlike my other card draw engines.

Finally, some additions from Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith and Elven Chorus which have replaced a plains and Huatli, Radiant Champion. Minas Tirith was a given as card draw on a land is great and I’m no longer worried about have a high basic land count with things like Land Tax and Knight of the Reliquary no longer in the deck. It does make Earthcraft more likely to not work, but that has only happened to me once thus far. I may add more basics in the future, but for now it is working.

Huatli’s time has finally come. She is great when she works, but just like augur of Autumn she requires setup to work. Besides that, she is usually 4 mana to do nothing for a turn or two. Also, I have likely played out a lot of my creatures by the time she ults anyway, so Elven Chorus is leagues better than Huatli, even if it doesn’t actually draw cards. The added bonus of creatures tapping for mana is nice as well.
