Mono Black Control Canadian Highlander 100

Highlander Competitive Control Mono-Black

Maybeboard

What started as a Chainer EDH hybrid deck soon became a highlander deck because it simply couldn't play both roles competatively against those 8 cost sorceries.

Now it's an oppressive midrangeish deck, drawing on all the nightmares of black's past. All the best creature kill to make sure you don't lose to any creature decks (tuned against a Boros deck full of swords, speedy, speedy swords) and all the most broken black tutors and card draw I can offord to piece together wins against anything else. Weak to blue based control but I have none of that in my playgroup so... yeah.

Suggestions are always welcome but this deck is essentially card perfect. Could go faster or longer but I like it where it is. If I ever get to the point where I think I'm about to cut Phyrexian Obliterator or Lake of the Dead I stop tinkering.

YJ points 7/7: Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Mox Jet, Mind Twist

EDIT: I have abandoned this deck in favour of a faster, more disruptive version after playing at YJ for a few months this summer. The amount of creature kill that lets me live in my playgroup is garbage against UX tempo/combo. MBC is definitely playable in this format, but I haven't cracked it yet though I have seen lists that have. GGs everyone!

Ran into a BW Pestilence list of essentially my deck, but far more aggressive and disruptive that got me very, VERY excited. I got so far as to price out the last few cards I don't own before I ran it against my long time nemesis, the Boros deck, and could not justify the switch.

But this deck, which had more creatures and a lower curve, managed to find room for Solemn Simulacrum AND Steel Hellkite which blew me away, as I haven't been able to run either for a long time now. So I've cut the two most aggressive creatures in my deck for those two, as well as few minor tweaks to make the deck even slower. Not sure what that will do to my craterhoof matchup (nemesis the second) but we shall see!

Hey Dave, I'm a murican that wants to play this format. Is there an updated points list? The last the viclander blog was updated was October.

Also, have you considered Big Gris and Grey Merchant? Gris is a good card in general to reanimate, and Gary looks like he could do work in a deck with alot of black mana symbols.

Congratulations on your fine taste in formats! Welcome to the most fun you can be having with your cards.

The headquarters is unofficially here at https://canadianhighlander.wordpress.com/ where you will find winning deck lists and content about which cards in which blocks are playable from all corners of the multiverse. The points list itself is right here https://canadianhighlander.wordpress.com/2015/02/26/what-is-canadian-highlander-general-information-on-the-format-points-list-and-other-resources/

There is also an incredibly active Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/288447914624649/ Any of the moderators will be happy to invite you, or you can just join, I don't know exactly how it works.

Thanks for the recommendations too. I have tried both and found them wanting. This deck is actually really out of date and is more for my personal meta game of insanely fast Boros and Elf decks. Because the deck likes to keep the board totally clear, things like Gray Merchant of Asphodel actually don't get much to trigger off of on my side. Griselbrand was actually just too expensive at 8 CMC, surprisingly. By the time I get to stabilize with him I don't have enough life to draw anything unless he gets off a few attacks, and at that point the opponent is just dead. Tapping out is just too dangerous and he's basically dead in your opener, or winning games for you that you are already winning.

That being said, I have seen BOTH played in a much better MBC deck before and they worked incredibly well _
