Chromium was never a violent dragon, often being characterized as benevolent, and doing many deeds that would be considered good in the eyes of most. But when provoked, he must defend himself, with lethal force. An Elder Dragon hardly needs any mortals help too defeat a foe, so he must do it himself. As a shapeshifter, he can turn into a human at will and avoid any lethal spells thrown his way. Once in this form he can slink by his opponents and perform a lethal strike with the equipment he's brought with himself.

When Chromium, the Mutable was printed I saw his insane potential instantly. He has been on my mind since his reveal, and he is nearly unstoppable as commander. The only thing he can be feasibly killed by is a board wipe, but you don't even need to cast him till the end of your opponents turn, load him up with equipment, discard a card and do lethal damage. To do this however, we must talk about the sub-theme to this deck besides Voltron.

Esper's primary purpose in commander is 1. Artifacts, and 2. Control. For this subsections purpose, I will be discussing the control package I equipped this deck with.

  1. Removal

In commander, I tend to focus more on hard removal rather than counterspells. Counterspells are good, but if you use them at the wrong time or there's a bigger threat soon after the major threat you countered, you no longer have the option to counter that spell, it also requires you to have mana open during your opponents turn. The alternative is letting it hit the floor and killing it when the time comes. This has proven to be more useful to be then counterspells. The same is true with board wipes if I'm facing a creature deck I most likely would prefer a board wipe to wipe the slate clean.

  1. Counterspells.

While I do prefer removal, counterspells are life-saving and should always be put into a deck if it runs blue. A well-placed counterspell can cripple entire decks.
