Win Conditions

This loop gives Kalamax infinite power and toughness by casting an instant speed spell copying spell while Kalamax is tapped.

The Loop

  1. Have Kalamax tapped on board
  2. Someone casts a spell (S1)
  3. In response, cast spell copier (R1) (Twincast, Expansion / Explosion, Increasing Vengeance, etc.) targeting S1
  4. Kalamax triggers copying R1 making copy 1 (C1) targeting R1
  5. Kalamax triggers getting a +1/+1 counter
  6. C1 resolves making Copy 2 (C2) of R1 targeting R1
  7. Kalamax triggers getting a +1/+1 counter
  8. C2 resolves making Copy 3 (C3) of R1 targeting R1
  9. Kalamax triggers getting a +1/+1 counter
  10. Repeat for infinite power and toughness

The Finish

Combat: Whispersilk Cloak/Rogue's Passage/Kessig Wolf Run

Sorcery Speed: Chandra's Ignition

Instant Speed: Ral, Storm Conduit triggers during to loop

This combo generates infinite mana at instant speed to cast a spell with in infinite X value to kill opponents. This requires at least 11 mana to start, but only 7 mana from lands to be mana positive. This can be achieved with tapped Kalamax + Turnabout, tapped Kalamax + Frantic Search + a rock, and a variety of other ways. This makes the combo deceptively fast.

The Loop

  1. Tap all lands
  2. Cast Turnabout, target self, choose untap all lands
  3. Cast Reiterate with buyback, targeting Turnabout
  4. Resolve Reiterate, copying Turnabout, target self, choose untap lands
  5. Resolve copy of Turnabout
  6. Tap all lands
  7. Repeat steps 3-6 for infinite mana

The Finish

Instant Speed: Comet Storm, Electrodominance, or Expansion//Explosion + Reiterate

Interesting Tech/Powerful Magic

Opponents are going to look to shut down the value that Ol' Thunderbutt brings you really fast. Fortunately, while Kalamax is tapped, Narset's Reveral will allow you to not only stop, but also steal a large variety of removal without costing you a card.

How it works

  1. Have Kalamax tapped on board
  2. Someone casts a threatening spell (S1)
  3. In response, cast Narset's Reversal (R1) targeting S1
  4. Kalamax triggers copying R1 making Copy 1 (C1) targeting R1
  5. Kalamax triggers getting a +1/+1 counter
  6. C1 resolves, returning R1 to your hand (the original Narset's Reversal) and makes Copy 2 (C2) targeting S1
  7. Kalamax triggers getting a +1/+1 counter
  8. C2 resolves returning S1 to their owner's hand and makes a copy of it (S2) under your control.
  9. Kalamax triggers getting a +-1/+1 counter
  10. Resolve the stack

At the end of this chain, you will have stolen their spell, while also keeping Narset's Reversal in hand for the next opponent's turn if they try anything as well. Thunderbutt gains three +1/+1 as a bonus as well. Be aware this does not stop most board wipes, as you still have to cast the original spell, but it will stop the likes of Cyclonic Rift and even bounce your opponents' boards while preserving your own. Under normal conditions the chain does not work against counterspells either as you will end up with a counterspell under your control, but the only valid target would be what your opponent was trying to counter. However, if an additional copy were available, such as from Twinning Staff, it can work as you'll have a copy of Narset's Reversal available that you can target with the counterspell. You would also be able to create a variant of the Spell Copy Loop in this situation, with the newest copies of Narset's Reversal targeting the oldest.

Kalamax can only copy instants while he is tapped. While the easiest and more straightforward way to tap Kalamax would be through combat, sometimes you don't always have a safe avenue to do so or you may be trying to hold back to avoid player aggro. In order to do so, this deck features a package of card that will allow you to tap Kalamax at will.
