Sideboard

Beasts have always been my favorite tribe from the first time I learned how to turn cardboard sideways when I was taught how to play Magic with a Beast precon all the way back in 2004. So, once I started delving into EDH years later, I naturally attempted such a tribal deck as one of my first few decks. It's been through many iterations (and Commanders) over the years, but there's been a recent good string of luck for my oft-neglected creature type of choice. Gone are the days of running the fattest dudes possible (RIP Krosan Cloudscraper). With a rise in the quality of Commander staples in recent years this deck has become much more streamlined, leaving the battle cruiser life behind.

Commander and Companion:

Gahiji was not the first to helm this deck, but has proven to go very well the the abilities of the rest of Beasts. At one point, Mayael was my commander. She seems fantastic on paper, what with the Naya Gods fatty flavor, but I had to put more resources into making her work than I wanted to commit to in a fun, tribal deck. Gahiji fit the position because he fit the tribe, he brought an incentive for the rest of table to help my combat math out, and wasn't too shabby on his own. I've come to really like him because he really does help the rest of the team, and five mana isn't too, too much when you're based in green.

Creatures:

The draft that I'm posting here feels a lot like a socially acceptable Sliver deck. There's a healthy mix of dudes who help the team, and good solid hunks of meat in the creature suite. Onslaught block has a few remaining examples. Krosan Warchief is a key three drop in the deck (Cheapens the rest of my beats and pops regen shields at a respectable rate), and Ravenous Baloth, although becoming my favorite in a the age of damage on the stack shenanigans, can provide some amount of upside in the face of an upcoming wrath. Shards block brought us a few power matters beasts that boost the tribe without explicit wording. Core sets provided a drip of Beast hope for years (Thragtusk being a shining example), but with M21 out and about Elder Gargaroth provides an enviable text box and Garruk's Harbinger brings a way to dig for more guys as well as a few of my utility planeswalkers. I've shied away from the Ikoria mutate guys. I"m afraid there's just not even mutate support in our shard to warrent ever seeing a mutate ability go off more than once. I'm really happy with the solid core of the creatures that have risen to the top in this tribe.

Planeswalkers:

This is a complete home cooking/fuzzy feeling deck for me, so I made a lot of the non-creature utility in the form of my favorite planeswalkers. Yes, there's a good selection of enchantments that were picked for repeated value here, but the planeswalkers are here for the little kid thrill of it. I never though I'd use a Domri primarily as a man rock, but that's the world that we live in. The Viviens provide dig and a good chunk of excess ability. Garruk's name appears all over the deck, and for good reason. Garruk vanity cards keep this deck humming. So naturally, his two best iterations also make an appearance in the deck list. Tha planewalkers in the list help out with the deck's core theme, but more importantly, are equally as fun of addition as playing this offbeat tribe in the first place.
