Adun is an expensive but reliable form of recursion, and this deck is built around exploiting the recursion of creatures that have good value. Meren of Clan Nel Toth is an even better creature to have on the board, but I wanted to have red in this deck for Sneak Attack, Avalanche Riders, and some other powerful cards. Also, the speed of Adun's ability is slow enough that he isn't likely to be the scariest commander at the table.
