A first set of changes after the commander switch

PartyJ, 7 years ago

Hello dear players,

not too long ago we had a new legendary enter the magic scene, which stirred up mono white voltron quite abit; Balan, Wandering Knight. Many players felt that this commander is the right choice for these kind of decks. Although I do have mixed feelings over what seems to be the better choice, I think there is no real obvious choice. It's a balance between flavour: Card draw vs. sheer Voltron (equipment) power. We all know that card draw is something white is lacking. But this new knight brings immense power and acceleration to your Voltron strategy. I believe it all comes together in the margin; what suits your style of play best...

Ofcource Balan, Wandering Knight deserves a spot in the 99.

Now that I played many games with this new setup, where I twisted and moved cards in and out as games went by. I am pretty confident that todays changes are a thorough result of enough games trying to feel the 'weight' of all the cards..

OUT:

  • Paradox Engine : While it is a great card, I felt that it didn't gave the edge that I was hoping from it in the mayority of the games. For a hefty cmc of 5 I prefer to cast/draw something else mid/endgame most of the time. He is gone for now...

  • Basalt Monolith : Now that the engine is gone, this rock is on the chopping block too. I am a huge fan of accelerated play. But in this build I need fast mana. On turn 2/3 I prefer to cast my first or second equipment. Especially now that I know it will never cantrip again with the engine back in the binder.

  • Land Tax : Although I do this with a nostalgic pain in the heart I felt that it was inevitable. In your opening hand it's a sweet sweet card, but later in the game it does so much less. And it doesnt cantrip with your commander as well. Too many times its just a lost draw, so eventually I had to say goodbye to the man with the bag :s

Adding three cards for a new round of testing: Auriok Steelshaper, Armory Automaton and good old Sun Titan.

Special notice: Gonti's Aether Heart is a card that I added at the end of the testing period. So I didn't have a game yet where I played this. I am curious how you feel about this card in here. Should it stay or go eventually?

Cha-Cha-Changes

RahXeph, 7 years ago

So after playtesting the deck, it's working really well at disrupting other decks with counterspells and repeated bounce, and I've gotten some great mileage out of Metallurgic Summonings. However, I'm still having some trouble finishing the game in a timely manner, and swinging an entrenched board state towards my favor. So, hopefully these changes will help.

I still haven't played this near enough but I added the Gifted Aetherborn's to the Main. If you are trying it. Let me know how it goes.

Minor tweaks

Zelda_MTG, 7 years ago

-Removed Soramaro, First to Dream for Phyrexian Metamorph. I didn't like how expensive Soramaro was, and the ability was not only overcosted at 4 mana, but also not needed. On top of that, it's not even a Moonfolk. The Metamorph has a lot of juicy targets to copy, such as the Amulet of Vigor, and with two you can stack the triggers for yet another easy path to infinite mana.

-Tweaked the mana base a little. Removed Everflowing Chalice (a card I don't think fits in this deck), removed Myriad Landscape (too slow without AoV out), removed Buried Ruin (nice but not needed). Added 2 extra Snow-Covered Islands, and more importantly, a Ghost Town, an insane card for this deck.

-Went ahead and took out Arcane Lighthouse...a pet card of mine that fits my particular meta pretty well. But the better choice in general is the Oboro, Palace in the Clouds. So in it goes.

This should be the final draft of the deck, as I'm likely not putting anymore money into it.

Voltron ain't working...

toast37, 7 years ago

Shu Yun was my first attempt at a voltron archetype, and it honestly isn't what I was expecting nor is it terribly fun. I'll be rethinking this deck eventually with a Jeskai prowess approach which aims to balance creatures and spells more equally and relies less on commander damage.

Solemn Simulacrum ----> Burnished Hart

Better ETB effect for the clones, really

Putting in Vizier of Many Faces for an additional cloning power, Swiftfoot Boots for protecting Keiga, and Beacon of Tomorrows for extra turns.

Taking out the following cards:

Bident of Thassa - Really isn't necessary for people to swing at me, especially if the whole point of the deck is to take their stuff and to only get one card out of it.

Show and Tell - With the only combo with this being Omniscience, really is kinda pointless

Dream Fracture - Better counterspells out there

Monster Ponza time

wylie72, 7 years ago

Going all in on the monster Ponza scheme. Got off to a rough start, first two events were 0-2 drops (game one vs affinity both times didn't help). Finally clicked last night for 3-1 performance. Feel exposed without the Beast Within and Acidic Slime to deal with an artifact/enchantment that shuts me down, but the deck is significantly sped up. Tracker gets insane quick.

3rd place at Standard Showdown 4-4-0

1-2 Cats

I got him easily in the first game.

He was a bit slow off the mark so I had tonnes of answers in hand by the time his Creatures hit the field.

Then I was able to bring them back with The Scarab God.

Second game I had to mulligan to five, and just never recovered from that.

Third game went on for a while, which worked in his favour. I wiped the board a few times with Yahenni's Expertise, but he was eventually able to build it back up, and start gaining life with Regal Cacharal.

I keep forgetting the ability on Yahenni's Expertise. Not good.

1-2 Dirty Energy

I played StuBi in this match.

His constant stream of Creatures got ahead of me in the first game. Once he was able to pump them up with , that was it.

In the second game he Dispossessed all my Torrential Gearhulks. I was able to keep putting his Creatures in the 'yard, then bring them back with The Scorpion God. Things swung in my favour in the late game.

In third game he Dispossessed all my Torrential Gearhulks AGAIN. Unfortunately I couldn't draw into The Scarab God, and I only had Vizier of Many Faces in hand.

I think I made a bad play choice to letting a Longtusk Cub stick, so I could copy it. That meant he could Crew an Aethersphere Harvester he had on the field. I tried to get rid if it, but he was able to keep making it Hexproof.

2-0 Ramunap

This player always has bad draw against me.

Tonight he got mana flooded in his first game, and mana screwed in his second.

I don't really have the heart to explain to him that his deck isn't optimised against mine.

Also that I think I Sideboard quite well against his deck.

He was getting a bit cocky tonight, so I'm glad in a way that I robbed him of two games.

The Scarab God worked well in the deck, although I keep forgetting the upkeep triggers.

Also desperate ritual helps with the bigger cost creatures so I can get them earlier I also like zada for immune to burn and big turn out with the Burn at the stack
