The Origin Story

I was so excited to finally have a Vampire tribal deck in 3 colors! As soon as Edgar Markov was spoiled, I had my hands in my boxes, selecting my favourite cards for this deck. The deck name is a reference to the Guillermo Del Toro series The Strain. The Partnership logo is red, black and white, and represents the vampire-controlled totalitarian state.

The Meta

We are a friendly, casual, multiplayer group that enjoys high-powered good fun. As such, we are enforcing the Banned List - The Command Tower that is mostly focused on mass land destruction or cards that prevent play, like Winter Orb or Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger. Also we decided not to use Sol Ring because that just frees one spot for everyone in every deck to play something different.

The Commander

There really is no dispute about how strong Edgar Markov is in duels, having been banned in the format. However multiplayer is another game, and managing multiple opponents with a fast-paced deck can be tricky. I have seen many builds focused on very low CMC vampires paired with token enhancements to draw as much value from Eminence as possible. This is certainly a valid avenue, but I am more interested in capitalizing the +1/+1 to all Vampires ability, and just using Eminence as a collateral benefit.

The Creatures

Each time I review this deck I end up with more creatures than I started with, because every time I play this deck my hand seems to be stuffed with cumbersome "win-more" pieces, while a good old two-for-one Vampire would work just fine. Several pieces of tribal affinities ended up cluttering what should be a constant stream of threats, so I refined the selection and replaced those with Vampires that have useful abilities.
