Fear and Goading in Las Vegas

Commander / EDH RGW (Naya)

"Cast off the law! Awaken your rage!"

Its Marisi! We're here to show our short-sighted law-abiding opponents the meaning of rage and get everyone throwing blows in every direction but ours. Goad is a wild time, and the repeatable ability to goad over and over quickly snowballs out of control, as goading an opponent leaves them deliciously open to be goaded again next time our turn rolls around. And hey, while we're getting our opponents attacking each other, we might as well give them a few tools to help them along, right?

Our deck is all about combat, so we're trying to make sure we're forcing our opponents to ALSO be all about combat, a phase they're likely not prepared for. Getting through while Marisi is on the board can quickly become backbreaking, so we're trying to get through as many ways as possible. In our colors, Flying and Trample are our best forms of evasion, so we're running creatures like Herald of the Host and card:skyfire pheonix to get over our opponent's defenses, along with cards like Overwhelming Stampede and Titanic Ultimatum to trample over when the time is right. Our colors offer us some pretty interesting options for circumventing blocks in other ways though, such as cards like Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist and Odric, Master Tactician to control how our opponents block. We're also running Soltari Visionary mostly for the Shadow keyword, but effects like that are great when we can get them. The key will be goading the right opponent at the right time since repeatable goad snowballs so well, so don't be afraid to use the least amount of things you need to goad one player so you can more comfortably block the other two.

To help on that end, as well as getting in on another axis, we run some token generating options that will either make us evasive tokens like Hornet Queen , or cards that can make us an overwhelming amount of them like Rith, the Awakener . We also run ways to make our tokens evasive, particularly with Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa to make sure we can get through with as few resources as possible. Blade of Selves is a great option here too, since we can freely throw extra chaff at our opponents to either force a goad, or make it that much easier to do so next turn. Granting Myriad to a hornet token is great fun, but why not try equipping it to Nacatl War-Pride and really get the fun started?

Something we have to consider is that goad is very scary to our opponents, and people really don't want it to happen to them. If an opponent has the means to attack us, unless there's great incentive not to, they likely will, so keeping our defenses up if we can't goad the entire table will be important. Things like Samut, Voice of Dissent will help us keep threatening blockers up, and Godsire can make sure we can stick a big 8/8 in the way of something coming our way. We also run a lot of group-slug cards though, to try and get the table to attack people other than us even if they don’t have to. Hunted Dragon and Hunted Lammasu will give our opponents attacking power for when we goad them while creating an evasive creature for us to enable that, and Varchild, Betrayer of Kjeldor will fuel all sorts of swingy combat steps that only benefit us in the long run. Making the goad effects hurt even more with Gahiji, Honored One and Crescendo of War can help us need less goad steps to get the job done, as well as snowballing the hurt even more violently.

And that’s Marisi! This is a first draft of the deck, and ideally I’d love to run a little more interaction as testing helps round this out into a more streamlined list, but I’m excited for the build so far! What Marisi builds and cards have you been excited to use? Let me know, and lets break the shackles of the Coil together!
