Highland Berserker Discussion

Funkydiscogod on Ally deck

I like this take on the style, but I think there are too many cards that don't work well with themselves.

Just for example: any more than one Highland Berserker on the battlefield is no better than one, because the ability it gives doesn't stack. By contrast, multiple Akoum Battlesinger or Ondu Cleric on the battlefield don't lose any power with multiple copies. I think this should be the driving force behind the number of copies of a card you include.

In my opinion, you got to much going on here and not enough "straight-lined" synergy. Do away with Halimar Tidecaller and anything with "awaken". Do away with Auriok Windwalker, Stoneforge Acolyte, Steelshaper's Gift, Stonehewer Giant and all the artifacts. Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper seems like a loner in this deck, ditch him.

Where the allies really shine is in their enter the battlefield abilities like rally. Consider putting in Munda, Ambush Leader, Kazuul Warlord, Hada Freeblade, Firemantle Mage, Highland Berserker, Munda's Vanguard, Relief Captain, Kazandu Blademaster, Talus Paladin...etc. I run a boros ally deck hence the colors of the cards mentioned above but there are literally dozens of ally creatures with the rally ability.

I should mention Cathars' Crusade, Coat of Arms and Door of Destinies as well. And Ally Encampment would really help out too.

Gideon, Ally of Zendikar?

Ok, first thing: why General Tazri? You are not gonna get its activated ability.

Second: The mana curve is way to high for 20 lands. If you want to have so many 3 and 4 cost cards you might want to put more mana or ramp in the deck.

Third: Consider more low cost allies like Highland Berserker.

I have two allies deck, none of them are good but it can give you card ideas since you asked for it: Allies commander taht isn't very good and My take on Boros (R/U) BUDGET allies.

You have an awesome list so far. I feel that there are a few great options you aren't including.

Hagra Diabolist is just evil! It can destroy an opponent or two in the same turn.

Ondu Cleric is just the opposite. It can raise your life quickly!

Highland Berserker is a savage!

Joraga Bard gives all of your allies vigilance!

Coat of Arms is a tribal deck staple.

Cover of Darkness gives all of your allies fear.

If you are having trouble with your cmc Belbe's Portal makes all your creatures a 3 drop. There is also Cryptic Gateway.

Highland Berserker gives all allies first strike. I would probably replace Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder because he only affects one creature. You did a great job +1!

I think Talus Paladin would help in this deck because it can give you massive amounts of life. Also, Highland Berserker will give your allies first strike.

I am assuming your budget isn't super high given the current TCG player price of $13.30. However, cards like Hada Freeblade, Kazandu Blademaster, Akoum Battlesinger, Expedition Envoy, Firemantle Mage, Kabira Evangel, Ondu Cleric, Reckless Bushwhacker, Sylvan Advocate, Talus Paladin are all cards that should likely be considered over some of the cards you have currently -- such as Goblin Freerunner, Highland Berserker, Joraga Auxiliary, Kitesail Scout, Makindi Aeronaut, Makindi Patrol, Ondu Champion, Ondu War Cleric, Resolute Blademaster, and Tuktuk Scrapper. Kazuul Warlord, Munda, Ambush Leader, and Turntimber Ranger are also fairly mediocre. They can surely get out of control if left unchecked. But most competent players can and will save removal for them.

You would also benefit greatly in cutting your deck down to 60 cards. Basically, the reasoning behind this is you want to be able to consistently draw or have access to your best cards-- or have the card in hand that you need when you need it. The chances of that happening goes down the more cards you have in your deck. So imagine you are at 60 cards and are thinking about adding more. You have to ask yourself, "Is this card better than any of the other 60 cards?" If the answer is no, then do not add it. If the answer is yes, identify the card it is better than and substitute it.
