Herald of Dromoka Discussion

ZendikariWol on Warrior at heart

Good cuts include Elvish Skysweeper, unless you have plenty of fliers in your meta. Disowned Ancestor: fine early game, and it would be hella good if outlast wasn't a sorcery, but alas. Graveblade Marauder is okay but it's generally lackluster (relies on your dudes dying). Herald of Dromoka and Dragonscale General cancel each other out. Petrified Wood-Kin is risky and Matsu-Tribe Sniper is just sorta lame. Spirit Loop really doesn't fit the theme of the deck.

Sorry I have to be salty here, just wanted to suggest some cuts. Also maybe drop the banners for signets (eg Boros Signet).

Hyperalgialysis, If Brave the Sands is ever print in a masters set at common, it would be a huge buff to the deck. Not only would it add consitancy to the deck, it would allow us to play one of the be common exert creatures, Gust Walker more reliably. Though with all the pseudo-vigilance related things being suggested recently (Thanks by the way), how would the deck play without the warrior theme and instead, focusing more on other ways to untap the creatures? Personally, I believe that playing the one time effects won't help enough with consistency, and the Herald of Dromoka and Marshaling Crys are stronger overall, even of the cute exert untapping doesn't work every time.

Hi, interesting idea, but i think this deck really stands on Herald of Dromoka. So maybe i would add some buffing instants which untap creature like Veteran's Reflexes or Djeru's Resolve. And maybe you can put there even Keldon Marauders, they can attack twice with that haste guy + they are warriors.

As an agro deck you should be careful about what kinds of lands and early plays you put into your deck. Playing a card like Despise means you're not playing a 1CMC creature which could take you off an aggressive path. Same goes for Scoured Barrens, since you want to play a 1CMC creature a lot more than you want to gain 1 life on turn one. Fairly cheap upgrades to the mana to ensure you are playing untapped lands are cards like Concealed Courtyard and Caves of Koilos.

Solemn Offering is a sideboard card at best and should not be in the mainboard.

Chief of the Scale is too defensive, Hateblade, Hordechief, Skullhunter, Pain Seer, Herald, and Hordemate are all fairly mediocre and certainly not worth putting you over the 60 card minimum and decreasing your efficiency.

Subtracting the Despise, Offering, and cards mentioned above leaves room for about 25-30 or so slots that can be used to help make the deck more aggressive and cohesive. Cards like-

Arashin Foremost

Battle Brawler

Blood-Chin Rager

Brutal Hordechief

Dragon Hunter

Gatekeeper of Malakir

Glory-Bound Initiate

Herald of Dromoka

Mardu Woe-Reaper

Mardu Shadowspear

Ruthless Cullblade

Secure the Wastes

As far as the removal goes, Bile Blight is fine but should be upgraded to Path to Exile or Fatal Push when you can

Also, in aggro decks, I especially recommend running 2 - 4x Valorous Stance. That card's utility is way too good to pass up. Especially in a meta with Fatal Push. It will not block Path to Exile, but most people would probably try not to use those up right away. Instead of Mardu Charm, I would run Secure the Wastes, and for the most part Crackling Doom is kind of worthless in modern, unless you're going up against a control type deck.

Kolaghan's Command is almost a must if you can afford the price (since you got the colors I would put at least 2x in my SB). I bought 8 of them when they were selling for a buck, I knew that card was going to be broken.

I would:

Maybe if you find space for it, a Mardu Strike Leader.

Lands:

Total 22 lands since your CMC is so low. You also need some wincon finishers, Sorin, Solemn Visitor is my aggro planeswalker of choice here. He also pairs nice with the painlands, basically having you recover any early self-pain. You should definitely use some disruption, probably Thoughtseize in SB otherwise you are highly vulnerable to wipes. Something on the sideboard for drawing extra cards wouldn't hurt either, e.g. Painful Truths.

So, for the SB, I would add

2x Thoughtseize2x Anguished Unmaking2x Blessed Alliance2x Kolaghan's Command

Depending on how competitive your meta is, there's a few other things you might need to add in there.

The core of most warrior decks look extremely similar because those are generally the best warriors out there.

I built a similar deck to this during the theros block for standard.

Not sure I agree with Herald of Dromoka, seems like you could do better for that spot. Same thing with Glory-Bound Initiate. The exertion gimmick is costing you too many cards I think, and warriors can be far more aggresive.

As for lands, you have far better options than Nomad Outpost without breaking a budget.

Not sure if this is something you converted from standard to modern recently, but in any case you could check out The Horde smiles at death - Competitive (budget) for some inspiration (maybe).

Hi there!

I like the deck. I have a warrior deck too. You can watch it, if you want.

Only my deck is i saw that you plays Combat Celebrant great card.

My idea is: cast him with Aether Vial on turn 3 end of his/her turn. And cast in turn 2 Herald of Dromoka and other warriors.

Attack in turn 4 two times.

One glaring problem: Commander decks NEED to be 100 cards, no more and no less. If you're building for theme, take out some of the more expensive non-tarkir cards. If you don't care that much, take out some of the cards that don't synergize well. For example, you have like 3 Warrior creatures in the deck, so Herald of Dromoka doesn't really help you. There are better 2-drop creatures in white and quite possibly in Tarkir blocks.

Cards I would consider taking out: Herald of Dromoka, Seek the Horizon, Wing Storm (this one can go to sideboard for anti-flying decks), Pinion Feast (same as Wing Storm), Fleetfeather Sandals, Life's Finale (since your deck is creature focused, you don't want symmetrical board wipes), Incremental Growth, Abzan Skycaptain (only benefits when it dies, not when it enters, so it doesn't help immediately), Longshot Squad to sideboard, Krosan Reclamation.

I would also recommend taking out Fertile Thicket for a forest, and taking out 2 swamps.
