The floor of the Battle Square in Final Fantasy 7, which reads, THE BRAVE DO NOT FEAR THE GRAVE.

Cloud Strife has arrived, autoequipped with Double Cut Materia and offering (yet another) Commander-damage path to victory

How to Play:

This is a relatively straightforward deck. Begin by littering the field with Independent, Steal, and Time Materia. Members of AVALANCHE are welcome to join up too - equip them with the Steal Materia and get more items. AP Grind every chance you get - Cloud needs a lot of EXP to solo fights in the Battle Square.

When you're ready to swing big, play Cloud and equip him with everything you've got! The Time Materia gives him Haste and evasion, getting his damage through immediately. Independent Materia can boost his damage and HP/Vitality. Steal Materia is also helpful here, especially if it is triggered by combat damage - that combos with Cloud's Double Cut Materia.

If you need to take something out, use your Destruct Materia. This can either take out a single problematic target, or wipe the field and leave only the Indestructible Cloud left standing, ready to swing in with all the Materia equipped.

Thanks for the recs ToastedBagl.

Some of those, like the Greaves and Boots, I already have. Haste is very important to helping the deck's killswitch function. I don't think I'd include anything else that gives Cloud Indestructible, since he gives it to himself, and I think trying to destroy all artifacts will set me back too much. But I still might add some more boardwipes to the mix.

I like the ramp recommendations you've given, I'll probably slot those in somehow.

The extra combats from the Wallbreaker are nice - I was already considering adding extra combats to level up the 2x Cut Materia to 4x Cut. I'll consider that along with some other options.

+100 for flavor and theme! Have you played the deck in person by chance? Either with proxy or the like? If so, how does it really fair? I am primed and ready to also build it but not too sure yet.

Goldberserkerdragon I'll be using it at FNM later this week - I'll update you!

Sick. Good luck and safe travels.

I can't speak to where it would fit in flavorwise, but Worldslayer feels like it it slots really well into the deck.

Unlife I don't recall if Forge Anew was in here, but alongside stuff like Clever Concealment and Teferi's Protection or even just an Apostle's Blessing or effect thereof, I agree.. that's a super good inclusion.

KongMing Ehh?

Sorry for the delay Goldberserkerdragon, we're moving next week and held a long going-away party yesterday.

Here's the boardstate I had when the game ended, I'll talk you through my turns, then give some analysis on what went well and what upgrades are needed. (Note, there were also 3 token copies of the Blood-Forged Battle Axe on Cloud)

enter image description here

It was a 5-player game playing with (in turn order) Dogmeat, Mothman, Cloud (me), Gavi, and Bumbleflower.

Opening Hand: Plains, Mountain, Slayer's Stronghold, Rhux, Sol Ring, Thran Powersuit, Infiltration Lens

T1: Draw Plains, play Plains into Sol Ring into Thran Powersuit, pass.

T2: Draw Swiftfoot Boots, play Mountain into Rhux and Infiltration Lens, pass.

T3: Draw Rune of Speed, play Plains and Swiftfoot Boots, equip Rhux with Powersuit and Lens, swing for 4 damage unblocked, pass.

T4: Draw Sword of the Animist, play Slayer's Stronghold, play Sword of the Animist, equip Rhux with the Sword and the Swiftfoot Boots, swing 7 damage blocked, ramp a Mountain and draw Bloodforged Battleaxe (BFBA) and Plains, cast the BFBA, pass.

T5: Draw Colossus Hammer, play Plains, play Cloud and equip him with everything, cast Rune of Speed enchanting Cloud, draw Bilbo's Ring, swing a 14/11 Double Strike Cloud in at an open Bumbleflower (their only blocker got strategically removed by Mothman) and KO them with Commander damage, ramp a Mountain (not pictured) and create two copies of BFBA, equip them to Cloud, pass.

~Between turns~ Get swung at for a lot of damage by Mothman (who could have seen this coming?!)

T6: Draw Wyleth Soul of Steel, cast and equip Cloud with Bilbo's Ring, swing a 21/14 Unblockable Double Strike Cloud at Mothman, kill him in one hit and only generate a single BFBA, ramp another Mountain (not pictured), equip Cloud with a third BFBA and pass.

Before Turn 7, I die to Dogmeat and Gavi's combined efforts.

Analysis :: Killing two players with Commander damage by Turn 6 isn't bad, but I didn't win the game.

As aforementioned, adding extra combat cards to upgrade the 2x Cut Materia to 4x Cut might have allowed me to take out another opponent Turn 6. The Hexproof on Cloud was invaluable - people tried to remove him but forgot about the Swiftfoot Boots.

I had a lot of redundant Haste, and not enough evasion to start getting Cloud's damage through blockers on Turn 5. Because all my mana values were so low and I didn't need to pay Equip costs on Cloud, I often had a lack of options in my hand despite having a bit of extra card draw.

Add: More evasion, card draw, and extra combats like Seize the Day.

Remove: Some Haste.

As an avid trophy hunter completionist, I can confirm: The Brave Do Not Fear The Grave; we only fear bad trophy lists. Great build, +1!

play tested this deck, didn't see a land for 13 turns. #gross

March 3, 2025 9:41 p.m.

Tulody that might be because this deck suffers from Prototype syndrome and lack of fetchlands (Scalding Tarn, Arid Mesa, Bloodstained Mire) both cheap and color-coded. I'm sure once the full set is revealed, that KongMing might make some updates.

March 3, 2025 9:49 p.m.

Was it Red XIII Tulody?

Sorry for your bad luck, but 37 lands should be absolutely playable with the current curve and rate of AP Grind and Steal Materia cards.

I know it's situational, but I think Sword of Feast and Famine is my preferred favorite, especially given my meta. In addition, Kellan, the Fae-Blooded fetchs you combo pieces. Tiana, Ship's Caretaker allows you to retain equipments against removal. Valduk, Keeper of the Flame makes a pretty good alternate win con.

March 4, 2025 3:58 p.m.

Noteworthy additions: Mithril Coat, Darksteel Plate, Shield of Kaldra combo well with Akroma's Vengeance.

Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves are more reliable than Cloak of the Bat but won't give flying.

Barrow-Blade means that Cloud can avoid blockers with abilities.

March 4, 2025 4:05 p.m.

Mirror Shield is an unsung hero in EDH as well.

March 4, 2025 5:12 p.m.

Diamond Pick-Axe, The Reaver Cleaver and Beamtown Beatstick help you evade commander tax or just ramp.

Have you considered the [Runed Crown] with your Rune of Speed? Adding Rune of Sustenance gives it options.

Hexplate Wallbreaker means you've just won.

I love so much seeing the Final Fantasy inspired decks start to pour out. It's going to be a grand year for me, I just know it. Seeing this brought me a lot of joy. Love the list. Of course, +1
